I was looking to get a tablet to read comics on. I want one that's 9.7 or larger. Any recommendations? I don't have a ton of money to spend... would an older iPad be a good idea? or maybe a cheap Android Tablet?

Does that affect older iPads? Also, would it be easy to read downloaded comics? I was planning on hooking it up to my dropbox and read comics from there... is that something that would be possible with an iOS app?

If you're planning on just reading them straight from a website an old iPad should work fine, Safari on my 1st generation model is still mostly compatible with any JavaScript I've come across although they're quite slow on some major sites, but I don't really care because I knew what I was getting into from the beginning.
I don't know how good iOS 5 is for reading PDFs locally if you're looking that far back.

Got my niece an amazon fire tablet for christmas, 50$ for a decent tablet that already has amazon kindle and shit built right in. I'm thinking about getting one for myself, look into that I guess. The 10in one is a bit more expensive though, but you can pay monthly of ur a poor fag like me

My grandma had one of these before my sister pawned it off, thank god she did, that thing sucked ass. iOS 5 sucks, it might be good for JUST reading certain things, but most apps and software arent even supported on that thing anymore. It's not like 30$ more for something current is that big of a deal.

Yeah, all I'm saying is that it can work. I like this thing hardware-wise but iOS 5 support is non-existent. But most of the basics are still fine and if you just want something to read PDFs online, it doesn't really have a problem. I mostly use it for SSH and reading news off of a plaintext scraper.

I'm testing the old Dropbox app on it right now though, and it looks like it runs like shit. He'd probably do better with a chink Android tablet unless he wants something that looks nice and can put up with the flaws.

I've had this happen to me before but I think it's more of a RAM issue. My iPad is generally fine but sometimes if I have Youtube playing or newer games there is slow down. I believe it has to do with my 1GB ram limitation more than anything.

definitely iPad, but don't get anything older than an iPad Air (2013 model). you can find them second hand for $100-150 nowadays. well worth it and iOS11 runs just great on it.

yes, iComic which is one of the oldest zip/rar/cbz manga readers (designed by a nip too) has both local FTP and dropbox support. you can even download files right from Safari and send it to iComic. pair that with MangaRock or MangaBird for webscrapping off botato and other online sources and you have a fairly feature complete manga reading experience.

i'm not autistic enough to suggest a Thinkpad, i was thinking any number of the 2-in-1 devices out now, or one of the nicer tablet PCs like a surface.

Imagine opting for a lag infested, pajeet coded Android tablet where 80% of apps don't even scale properly to the size of the screen instead of a gorgeous iPad that'll get all the updates that you need for years to come and tons of exclusive tools that you can't get anywhere else in that format.

I owned a decent tablet before, but have picked up one of these now. They are super cheap. It came with windows 10 and was nearly unusable, but i installed ubuntu and its great.

I doubt you've used the tablet functionality for anything beyond flipping it around to read long pages and PDFs you've already loaded while in laptop mode, that looks even worse than the 2-in-1 I've been subjecting myself to for the last couple years. A good older generation i5/i7 laptop, and an SSD if it doesn't come with one. If you absolutely must go with a tablet, an older Surface and a clean install should work great.

Android tablets are for the most part crap considering what you get for your money. You'd have to buy a $500 model to get one with a decent CPU. iPads are even worse with Apple's throttling and built in planned obsolescence to try and trick people into buying new iPads. You're looking at a $800 iPad every other year to get a device that won't lag when you try to type in a website address.

TL;DR mobile CPUs are trash, and Apple mobile CPUs are twice as trash.

Seconded. as someone who has developed iPad apps, the clients i have use nothing but the app i make, and evey OS iteration it gets worse. They end up buying new iPads because i cant do anything more to increase the performance than i already do, and every xcode changes the build to favor new iPads.

Old iPads are paperweights.
