Eat it

Send it into space

Open it up and polish the disks

Why destroying? You can whipe out the data by overwriting all the sectors with trash data like 000 or 111.

1: use gnu/shred
2: remove lid, power on and move a needle/nail/knife over the surface like operating a lathe
3: ????
4: PROFIT!!

By completely destroying it.

A hammer.

put it into the microwave.

>put it in your gaping anus
>poop it out
>flush it

This is terrible advice. I tried this on SSD and was able to recover data after. It just doesn't work.

There is a couple of good lectures on defcon about the subject. I think that the tittle is "how i lost my eye".

TLDR, use a nailgun.

Working a federal contract, we have a VERY strict PII policy and media destruction policy. So I have a SATADOM that has failed has been returned to me. I label it for destruction and forward it to security for destruction. Recieve it back stating it has been degaussed. MFW...

turn it into fine powder

Resonance.

shred

Let it die peacefully after 22k working hours like I did 2 days ago

Just throw it in any available DNC email server. Someone will get around to it eventually.

turn yourself in, you disgusting pedophile

Not downloading child porn and saving the drive for future use

dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdx
x = your drive letter

yea, thing is some of the better drive scrubbers years ago were capable of recovering from 50+ writes. shits not easy but shits can be done.

it works better with full metal plates as the shit will react in weird ways.

have an anti-matter hard drive on standby

Blend it
youtu.be/XHu_EJVZm58

>future use
Nice try. Old drives are useless. You really gonna sacrifice a whole 3.5" bay to increase your total storage by maybe 10% ?

save a very important file to it.

What's the point in destroying it? How old are these drives from 2003 or something?

kek

The point of destroying is that you may not know what kind of information is on it and that you cannot oversee the consequences if it being used against you for the rest of your life. I'm not talking about the HDD being used for illegal activities. Things that are okay now can be highly incriminating later.

Private data, how apparently insignificant it may look now, should stay private for ever.

Makes sense

use a welder to slag it.

acid
or mechanical metal shredder

>what is wear leveling
>what is Service Area
>What is spare space allocated for duplicated data

suomi perkele kurwa sauna

>sacrifice a whole 3.5" bay
Looks like somebody doesn't know about external adapters

throw it in a volcano

Tell the FBI that you have evidence that will lead to the arrest of Hillary Clinton. You will be shot in the back and all of your computers will disappear.

>external adapters
Oh yeah, that works and looks soooooo much better! What an idiot I am.

just eat it

I had a dead harddrive that was beyond saving, I even tried software like Spinrite in an attempt to get it going again. I really could've just disposed of it at that point and I'm pretty confident that if anybody retrieved and plugged it in they would be greeted with a dead harddrive, but because I really didn't want some extreme circumstance of somebody SOMEHOW reviving my dead harddrive and getting to my passwords that may still be retrievable from it. I took my branch cutter (similar to pic) and cut cleanly through the harddrive.

At this point, if you can retrieve my broken harddrive, dismantle it, rejoin the platters that have been severed, and put them into a new enclosure, and get it all running again, then I think you're entitled to my bank account info.

thermite + acid

Your image says it all dumb fuck.

couldn't data be recovered off of the shards?

Absolutely not.

Why do people take such extreme measures to destroy the content of a disk, such as polishing the plates, destroying it with a hammer, etc?

From what I've seen from data recovery experts, it seems that simply opening up a drive in an unsafe (not clean) room and exposing the plates to a bit of dust seems to fuck up the drive quite well.

So why is it that people so all this shit, when dust is just as effective?

better safe than sorry xD

Throw it into the Sun

Gas axe.

Lava

smashing it with a hammer is way more fun than just opening some screws.

Im using dariks boot and nuke. You can also use acid

Smacking it with a hammer would be easier and quicker.

Just no. Most of these types of claims are just speculation and rumors, recovery like this isn't possible. Recovery of data past 1 write of random data is basically next to impossible, you might get a few consecutive bytes back without error, but no more.

And past 2-3 random writes you're fucked.

For anything more than 3 passes, you'd need to post some evidence.

and that's what government wants you to think, but sadly because they got you to think that for their needs you left yourself vulnerable.

that said, an electromagnet that demagnetizes everything at once works, especially if you spin it up before hitting it because of how many changes happen before it stops, but still, dont trust a hdd to scrub by writing to itself.

NSA code them with toned electromagnetic waves so the damage can be reversed

Unscrew it and run two a current through the disc

Pic related for best solution.

Alternatively, open it up, break it up into small pieces through blunt force and incinerate the pieces with a blowtorch. Should be enough.

...

Put it a wooden bucket water and salt and await a week.

Just open it up and smash the platters, douse them in something flammable and burn them too if you want. How much thinking does this question take?

jet fuel

Goddamn love defcon.

>drive scrubbers years ago were capable of recovering from 50+ writes
Absolute bullshit. You fell for the Gutmann meme (deprecated by Gutmann himself). After a single write you'll need NSA, an electron microscope and $$$ to gather an unreliable, mostly useless statistical probability about the previous state (0 or 1) of every single bit.

>Recieve it back stating it has been degaussed. MFW...
I don't understand where's the problem. Degaussing is perfectly fine and acceptable and compliant with any standard you're working with.

you know there is a healthy level of paranoia, would I trust a hdd to scrub itself, not fucking ever, would I trust an electromagnet that scrubs it while the drive is on? yea, the power and amount of writes its simulateing is so many and strong that there is no reason to not trust it.

but a blow torch would do the same thing, you would just need to heat it up to the point the platters de magnetize.

Install some ea games on it.

Open it.
Pour some alcohol over the discs.
Set it on fire.

Quick, easy, not a a lot of mess, completely destroys the data, can be done with household items.

SSD: 4000 nuclear bombs going out at the same time right on top of it

HDD: drop it from 2 feet

Thermite.

Damn I sometimes wonder if that guy is still unharmed.

This is true. It's not worth the time and effort required to recover a drive in almost all cases. I mean, if it had the cure for cancer, the NSA would probably hammer on it, but it's ridiculously expensive.

egg

>hasn't been posted yet
Come on boys.

burn it up with a cutting torch, smash with sledge hammer,

bury it in the back yard where the ground stays wet the most, before you cover it in dirt pour a cup of salt on it

i have no idea, but smashing it into bits with a hammer or metal baseball bat seems like it would be the most satisfying way desu

youtube.com/watch?v=8Ah9gGKEtBU

Melt it down in a charcoal forge.
Make the blob into a dildo

Where the fuck do you get these obscure russian videos?

run it on an intel system

install windows

Drop it into the deep sea or smth

connect it to an intel processor and then browse webpages with javascript enabled

Buy a chinese HDD.

>remove pcb and throw it in the e-waste bin
>open case
>rip out the electronics controlling the drive head
>run an electromagnet a few times over the platters
>throw whats left into the metal recycling

>Whats the best way to completely destroy a hard drive?
Put in 70 years of reasearch into making a self-destructing time machine so the multiverse wave collapses into one and all possibilities that your hard drive isn't destroyed is determined
You can then self-destruct the machine and send the hard drive together with the machine into the anti event horizon.

Really? Magnet, SSD, goverment secure?

Sorry, SATADOM is short for disk on module, aka, an SSD without a case. I should have been clear.

Car battery plus acid solution
Plate the metal in the magnetic material from the hard drive disc onto some piece of scrap
Not recovering data from that shit

Sufficiently damaging or destroying the platters should be enough to make the data irretrievable.

I don't think any useful information (pertaining to the content of your data) in the HDD controller is nonvolatile.

Big ass magnets.

nothing beats physical destruction for data security

Blast it with a 12ga. shotgun a few times.
Glass tempered glass platers tun to dust.

Put in a zip lock bag with some ferric chloride added.
That old etchent's residue will totally destroy and contaminate any equipment trying to read the data later :D

Throw it in a river anywhere, but never in you own trash.

I suppose one could worry about finger prints and DNA traces.... So pour on some sulfuric acid based toilet cleaner too,...

It's really very gone now......

i remember when i was like 15 i was paid for a couple days to destroy hdds, basically what id do was drill a hole through them where the platters are

Actually I read some forensic papers that says it is possible to recover some information back even after 11 rewrites but it is very hard and it requires some information about what are you looking after.

For example, if they suspect that you downloaded a specific video they can use the information of that video as a base to recover something from your disk.

It is hard and expensive so unless you are a terrorist or run a silky road site they won't go that far
