Fujitsu are still currently fabbing SPARC CPUs and have created super computers running SPARC CPUs.
Is it time for Sup Forums to go full weeb and buy Fujitsu in order to escape the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities?

Perhaps.
We do need to get the fuck away from the x86 koolaid. As for where we go, that's debatable.
Here's some datasheets for you guys to check out. Includes specs of their rackmounts.

bump
Oracle has been making mad commits to Linux/SPARC. As a result Debian, who had discontinued their SPARC port with Debian 7.2 is now running a testing SPARC64, expected to be stable with Debian 10.
Other choices include OpenBSD (which is capable of interacting with the on-chip hypervisor and can thus operate in the host domain with ldomd), and of course Solaris and variants, such as DilOS.
I work for fujitsu in the DFW area
what branch?
spectre isn't fucking fixed it's a fundamental problem with speculative execution that research hasn't even started to fix damnit
Got room for a Computer Engineer undergrad graduating in May 2019?
Let's not forget /ourdistro/
Thanks for reminding me user. I’ve had an empty guest domain waiting for it.
Way ahead of you
raytheon hires the mentally retarded + cute almost all white defense waifus
please tell me youre graduating from SMU
Sparc was designed by (((oracle))) so no.
On this platform, I will say it is a public University in Texas, we in ECE just renewed our ABET.
Sparc was designed by a consortium including largely Sun, Texas Instruments, HAL, and Fujitsu.
Why would anybody use an architecture with next to no software?
No, it was designed by Sun. Oracle just bought its corpse to rape.
Correct, and although Oracle is definitely a lead member of that consortium, they share that lead role with Fujitsu.
They’re fantastic for appliances.
fuck just tell me, i can literally just tell you how to apply for the most entry level job
fuck if ur in unversity now they offer co-ops where you work whilst in school so you can get ur clearance
TTU.
user, I don't know if you know this, but that's actually a MAJOR advantage of Free Software and Open Source.
Whereas with proprietary systems like Windows and MacOS, where they pretty much only support x86 and maybe ARM if you're lucky, Free Software systems can be freely compiled for any architecture you desire.
Fucking Larry man
>On Friday, September 1, 2017, after a round of layoffs that started in Oracle Labs in November 2016, Oracle terminated SPARC design after the completion of the M8. Nearly the entire processor core development group in Austin, Texas, was dismissed, and the same for the SOC teams in Santa Clara, California, and Burlington, Vermont.
OS support used to be good
now it's shit
none of the free maintained Solaris forks boot on it
few new releases of Linux distros apart from Oracles own "Linux for SPARC", gentoo(haven't tried) and Debian(installer crashed on the machine I tried it on) support it
OpenBSD works well on most SUNW kit though
It's kinda like the Alpha machine I installed CentOS 4 on, cool but for novelty I might as well install an ancient Tru64, or in this case a no-longer-supported version of Solaris
Apply for Raytheon in Richardson
auto job my dude
70k starting
How’s graphics on any of them? Worth trying to do some kind of window manager with one of those obscure low profile cards on ebay, or do I stick with interacting with everything over ssh and ILOM?
Thanks user. Will apply.
On SPARC hardware? Depends on if it's a server or workstation.
Servers only have a serial console and a network port for ilom
Workstations have graphics, depending on age you might have issues finding a monitor that supports the sync-on-green signal it outputs, not to mention the DB13W3 connector
(also make sure you're getting "sparc inside" if that's what you're after, later years Sun sold loads of AMD/Intel kit too
On Digital/Compaq/HP Alpha machines? Yes, they usually have graphics - there are probably exceptions though
Same applies to HP 9000 - their m68k, hppa and Itanium stuff
Why yes I should clarify. This is a T5120, so as it is there’s no graphics. Looking at one XAUI, already running Fibre Channel Intiator, and still have one pcie x16 to spare. I’ll have a guide up in a second on compatible hardware, but am wondering if you’ve had any experiences you’d like to share about graphics (even like a simple twm+X11).
I have the usual VGA, DVI, Display Port, HDMI for displays.
What about connecting a dedicated graphics card via PCIe?
I'm literally running a t5120 right now buy a fucking pciex16 riser card and a radeon x1800 pro
(i'm also doing it on stream but i ain't lettin you find me)
Installing aftermarket pcie/agp/pci cards in Sun servers is no problem hardware wise, software wise you might run into problems with Solaris depending on the driver situation. Also remember to change the OpenBoot output to go to the frame buffer instead of the serial port, if that doesn't happen automatically when you boot up with a usb keyboard
Used to have a T5120 and thought about modding it into a desktop but the noise and form factor make it hard
