Are IPS monitors a meme?

>inb4 muh viewing angles

is there any reason why you should choose a 5ms IPS panel over a 1ms TN panel? I am genuinely curious to know what makes you guys choose one over the other. some say that the 1ms response time doesn't matter if your monitor is 60hz only. others say that you should either get a 144hz TN or a 60hz IPS.

(also, which brands do you usually go for/brands that you avoid and why)

have an ips and a tn side by side, tn looks like washed out garbage in comparison even when looking straight at it
i just use it to have webpages, messaging or documentation open

if you dont do gaymin it literally doesnt matter

wrong
if you do gaymin you get a 144hz tn with shit colors

Once you go IPS you never go back.

Muh viewing angles.

TN vertical viewing angle shift is horrible. No, it's not about looking at the display from extreme angles. It's so bad that there is a variance from top to bottom even when viewed from the ideal position.

and why would i need IPS if all i do is code and shitpost? do tell

I have a 23' dell ultrasharp ips for around 5 years and I like it a lot. Laptop TN panel looks like shit.

What is the actual difference in how they are built? They're both LCD with an led backlight, what makes the IPS have better viewing angles and colors? And why does said improvement usually come with decreased framerates/lag?

even webpages look better on ips, browsing for extensive periods on tn makes me want to throw up

what kind of screenie is best for comfy tiling WM setups like DWM, uwu?

>Anime
>uwu
Go to hell

It's about the structure of the pixels/subpixels.

The inconsistency across viewing angles can be so severe in the cheaper TNs that both eyes see different hues/shades (especially dark colors) and it's a pain to look at. TNs also just often are washed out and dull even at high backlight settings. This is very important in my opinion for enjoying or concentrating on any content, be it text, games, movies, photos, drawings or anything

better colors, better angles.

I just bought an IPS panel that is 1ms and has 144hz.
Why choose when you can get all?

rude!

>b-but muh colors muh 190° viewing angles
just get a TN and set the digital vibrance (saturation= to 75% lmao literally looks like any other ips colorwise

>The inconsistency across viewing angles can be so severe in the cheaper TNs that both eyes see different hues/shades (especially dark colors) and it's a pain to look at.
I've never noticed this unless it's turned 90 degrees so that the vertical viewing angle shift becomes a horizontal viewing angle shift. TN horizontal viewing angles seem fine to me, arguably better than VA panels and cheap/non-ATW IPS panels even.

>waaaahh anime on Sup Forums
kys

I want my shit to look good. The tradeoff is in favor of IPS panels.

>my reaction when ips fags
enjoy your backlight bleeding and 5ms response time

>tfw my IPS display has no glow or bleeding whatsoever

Response time is way more than 5ms though.

I fell for the 240hz aw2518(TN) meme and the colors are fucking amazing. I think that it's just the cheap TNs that are trash. Coming from a Dell ultrasharp ips

> found the Sup Forumstard

why are you always so easy to bait? stay insecure lol

> IPS has better colors

when will this meme end?

It LITERALLY CANNOT display black color. Or if it can then only on 1% of the area and varies across the entire thing. And when you change angles it changes tones of the black. Like wtf, thats the same thing IPSfags belitter TN users over.

pic related your average "black" color with an IPS panel

Why can't we just go to VA?
>Best contrast ratio
>better colors than IPS a good bit of the time
>good viewing angles
>no glow or bleed
I actively pisses me off that there isn't more VA, was looking for a 40" 4k monitor and all the decent price VA panels are fucking curved

black is not a color, black is the absence of color.
you normalfag newb

Cheap TN < Cheap IPS < Cheap VA < Good TN < Good VA < Good IPS

Note that "good" is usually more than double of the cheapest screen with the technology

but seriously Sup Forums, does response time matter @60hz?

i think the only disadvantage they have is the worse response time

>buys cheapest possible IPS
>complains that manufacturer implemented the worst backlight possible

may i ask what makes cheap va > cheap ips

Contrast isn't there, along with viewing angles.

If you do work that requires accurate colors it's important. Go back to Sup Forums.

Cheap VA usually doesn't have the horrible backlight bleed of cheap IPS

You kids have nothing to complain about.

youtu.be/k2v7k-wAm2E

ips isnt just about viewing angles, colors also look better and dont have that shitty washed out look TN has

DSTN in laptops was always cheap garbage
Funnily enough the first laptop with a color LCD had a fast TN screen

Sad to see that early handhelds were gimped by shit screens.

youtube.com/watch?v=EIer2-KAn7o

what price range is "cheap"? is a $160 ips still "cheap"?

It only matters if you do a side to side comparison.

The patrician choice.
Samsung CFG70 @ 120/144hz strobe mode is the closest competitor I've seen to a CRT when it comes to motion blur, black levels, and contrast.

>strobe mode
my man, strobing backlights was the best investment ever

You clearly have not seen a plasma display then

Because I'm not a 14 year old playing PUBG and thinking I suck because I don't have a 1ms MLG PRO Benq XTr3m3 Gaming Monitor

ips literally cured my migraines

>what is ATW polarizer

>switch to a 144hz tn
>lean back in my chair
>screen goes dark

It's an LCD, it never will display perfect black

>that image
>having the backlight in the center rather than the corners or sides
kek

>have tn monitor
>tilt 25 degree
>color washes out
>images are fucked

>have IPS monitor
>tile 45 degree
>color is still same
>images are still same

Yeah, that's the advantage. If you have a dual monitor setup, I'd recommend IPS. I got one of each and my TN monitor has garbage viewing angle, I can barely tilt it without fucking up the colors/contrast/image.

I don't understand what you're talking about.

LOL I KNOW RIGHT IPS HAS CHANGED MY LIFE

tn- bad color reproduction, bad contrast, fast response time, poor viewability
ips- good color reproduction, bad contrast, slow response time, good viewability
oled- bad color reproduction, good contrast, organic component decay, poor viewability

tn- gaymin
ips- professional (profession that involves working with colors, such as getting things ready for print) work
oled- disposable toy

they're both shit compared to a high end CRT to be honest.

You can't do this with dual TN monitor.

>bought one of 5 cheapest QHD IPS available to me
>literally no backlight bleed

link?

having more colors than a 1980 screen

I thought oled had good color reproduction?

>oled has poor color reproduction and poor viewability

protip: turn your head so it actually faces your screen

inb4 i look at both screens at the same time, thank you ips

OLED fucks up when colors are bright. This means it fucks up the entire screen and drowns the sides.

MicroLED is supposed to fix this.

which

BenQ BL2420PT

*VA panels are better. muh contrast

>VA
>slower than IPS
Okay

>BenQ BL2420PT
holy heck thats cheap

Hell yeah that's fucking cheap, no idea why though, haven't had any problems with it, seems pretty fucking great desu, had it for a bit more than a year, who know, maybe it will shit the bed when warranty ends

tftcentral.co.uk/articles/panel_technologies.htm

I will feed you, poor child.

also decided the check the current situation of QHD IPS locally and noticed ThinkVision P24q for ~same price, seems pretty good too, even -1 ms gtg compared to the BenQ, although no speakers(not that relevant to most people) and somehow 2.5 times the fucking power consumption
