I speak three languages. All of them are Germanic.

B-but we have german stuff from the time of Goths ;_;

i only monolingually speak english ironically

Pretty sure French is a Germanic language

it's a language family
and at one point it was a single language
it is a language of cucks

So yes it is Germanic

memes aside, Frankish-derived languages are interesting as fuck

it's all me

I wish French was more Frankish...

it lives on in Dutch

it would be cool to see a Romance language with heavy Germanic vocabulary, like an anti-English

What language do you speak??

Is Afrikaans invited?

>speak three languages
>inb4 bokmål, nymål and english

this is technically true, but we also know how much Arab stuff you have from the time of Umayyad

Surely

Well, according to Wikipedia (nice source, I know), 10% of our vocabulary is from Frankish...

Weird.

>bokmål, nymål
This always interested me. Norwegian came from Danish, right? And then they started speaking Norwegian other than how it was spoken?

How much is used in everyday speech?

We always had our own language, west norse. Denmark and Sweden spoke east norse. Norwegian was influenced by Danish and Swedish, but never became "danish" or "swedish". The written language bokmål is very similar to written danish, tho, because the written language started out as Danish during the personal union. Our spoken Norwegian is so different from Danish that we don't even understand each other, most of the time.

Why wouldn't it be

Errr.... :^)

So writing came from Danish, language did not?
Why not just write your language?

I don't know. We did write nynorsk, tho. But people have been acustomed to Danish-Norwegian, which by now has become "Norwegian" anyway.

can i join ?

Did this stem from when y'all were just coming out of Norse, so that it was not so contorted?

>Norwegian came from Danish, right?
No. Norwegian is its own language. Danish had a VERY large influence on it though, to the point where Norwegian jumped from being a west nordic language (along with Icelandic and Faroese) to being a east nordic language. Which is primarily due to the fact that there was no written form of Norwegian, so only written Danish was used.

When Denmark lost Norway to Sweden in 1814 it caused a huge upswing in Norwegian nationalism. Codifying their language was a way of distinguishing themselves from both Denmark and Sweden. Two written forms of Norwegian emerged: bokmål and nynorsk. Bokmål pretty much worked on the principle "don't fix what ain't broke" and is very similar to written Danish. Nynorsk is an attempt to undo Danish influences and make Norwegian more distinct.

Generally speaking the path of least resistance wins out and that is the case here as well. Only ~15% of Norwegians use nynorsk.

Not quite sure if I know what you mean. But the scandis never "came out of" norse, as if it happened in a sudden event. It has slowly evolved into what is today's modern scandinavian languages.

Welcome to the master race

Yes, but I mean did this occur during a time of higher mutual intelligibility?

Good summary.

I would also like to point out that the west coast dialects are very dissimilar to bokmål, and we are able to understand Icelandic(which is the ancestor of today's west norwegian dialect)

Hm, still not quite sure what you mean. Would you rephrase your entire question again? (call me stupid if you want)

The language changed its phonetics and grammar?

I probably know more English words than you, burgersson

If I'm correct nynorsk is considered a West Nordic language, no?

I'm not sure what it's considered to be in the linguistic world, but I personally would think of it as west norse/west norwegian.

Ah, I've since learned otherwise, but I was wondering if using two different languages as written and spoken was possible because they were just that similar.

Yes and no. There were substantial changes to it before the Danes, but the Danes cemented those changes and pushed it further into that direction.

Yes.

o-oui :^)

It is West Scandinavian
