What one user?

What one user?

I need some biased opinions. Everything I look up online tells me that I "decide for myself" what ever the hell that means.

I tried HTC vive yesterday, and that shit was awesome. any advice?

the rift has not been doing too well so your choices are PC or PlayStation

If you don't already have a graphics card good enough for VR your only option is PlayStation VR. Crypto currency mining has made PC gaming too expensive.

That is good news.

Why hasn't it been doing well?

I ended up going with a microshit mixed reality headset.
They are made by different manufacturers, but they average around $200 on amazon.
I think the dell one has a slightly larger field of view though.
The hand tracking isnt quite as good as vive/rift but they have a higher resolution and you dont need to set up sensors around the room.
There is free software on steam that will let you use it to play vive games.

Go with a vive, its open platform. The Rift went with the walled garden and only works with rift based software and games. PS VR I have no idea, but I did hear sony pretty much lost interest in it, no idea if thats true tho. I have a vive and I am technically running it under spec as I have a gtx 770, I was going to upgrade but as stated, the crypto currency bullshit has more than doubled the price of gpus so thats out of the question. But even on a 770 its runs 95% of the crap I throw at it in vr flawlessly.

I've been following these things since Palmer's kickstarter but I haven't bought one yet.

I'd say go with PSVR only if you want to avoid buying a VR PC and/or have a PS4. There is vastly more shit going in the PC VR scene so personally I think PSVR is only worth it for the normiest of normies.

Between the two PC headsets (and Windows Mixed Reality ones) I'd say go with the Rift. It's the best offer right now and the only major issue against it is the way they chose to do business (by trying to copy Apple's walled garden). Still, unlike HTC or any other 3rd party headset manufacturers, Oculus has their entire business built around VR and it's not just another product line, it's the core to their business.

Do you have a good gaming PC?
Do you have a PS4 Pro?
Do you need to wear glasses for distances approx. 1.3-2m away?

*which

Wait for next gen.

>and only works with rift based software and games
Wrong.

digitaltrends.com/virtual-reality/epic-games-tim-sweeney-htc-vive-outselling-oculus-rift/

>Rift only works with rift based software and games
>but you can easily turn off a setting to gain access to any other game
I'm not saying the Rift is better than the Vive, I'm just pointing out that you're wrong.

>Do you need to wear glasses for distances approx. 1.3-2m away?
Not OP, but yes. Why?

As someone who bought the Oculus 2 weeks ago after doing a lot of Vive vs Oculus research.

>the screens and image quality is the same
>tracking is equally as good if you get an extra sensor for the Oculus
>setting up my Oculus was a pain in the ass, having wires running through my room and dealing with usb host controllers. The Vive is supposed to be super easy plug and play
>the Vive play area is a little bigger
>the default Vive audio is not great so a lot of people buy the Deluxe audio strap which is another $120. The default oculus audio is pretty good
>most people prefer the Oculus touch controllers. Vive is working on new "knuckles" controllers which seems really promising but it's releasing soon™ (so that could be months) and that will be another $100/200
>the Vive is a little more future proof, you can use the lighthouse trackers with other headsets like the upcoming Pimax
>the Vive is $150 more expensive if you get a 3rd sensor for the Oculus

I probably missed some important points but this is what I could come up with on the top of my head while phoneposting.

In general both are good and in my opinion the Vive isn't worth the extra money but that's very personal. I just got the Oculus to have some fun while waiting for the next gen of VR.

Because the Oculus is pretty terrible for glasses, the vive is okay, and PSVR is the best.

Samsung Mixed reality thingamabob.
I had Oculus and PlayStation VR before, the Samsung thing is way more handy and fun

I used an Oculus for all the Steam VR stuff.
The mixed reality ones also work fine - they standardized a lot of the software

Vive has a larger FOV.

Reading my post back, I realise I wasn't very clear. I was trying to say that whilst the Rift is initially closed-off, it can very easily be changed to support any software, so its "walled garden" approach isn't a problem.

That said, I'm still skeptical of Facebook and wouldn't be surprised if the Rift 2 is actually locked down.

Wrong. Both have a FOV of 110.

get the vive

I used my rift for about 4 months almost every day during the sale, I haven't even took it out the box since then. It wasn't an issue with games because I was addicted to Sairento and VR hacks on standard PC games using vorpx, which was a hit or miss app but genuinely cool

The urge to use the rift just isn't there anymore but the vive and psvr may be different and better in terms of usage I haven't tried them though. I might get back to the rift sometime to rekindle that WOW factor but I doubt it'll be used for long

Wait for vive pro

The Rift seems like dead end.

Vive Pro was announced and it can be used with the current Vive base stations and controllers. A Vive branded wireless module with intel tech was announced too and it'll work with both headsets Vive and Vive Pro.

Theres also the Vive trackers, logitech is working with them to track your keyboard.

youtu.be/XVXvk1X1Gbs?t=16

You can track your feet and hip to achieve full body tracking.

youtu.be/_aMc-fLkNZA?t=4

Oculus Rift has announced 2 stand alone headsets, its clear they are gearing towards mobile gaming and media consumption. I guess its still an option price wise, but what you see is what you get, don't expect anything else.

Expect Sony to shift focus to something cardboard related.

Why would the largest player in the VR market switch over to cardboard?

That was an attempt at a joke sorry, I don't know anything about PSVR, but they made some hardware revisions to the controllers and the headset thats good I guess.

If I made a VR PC, Would that also mean high-end regular-gaming experience?

OP here
-No, but thinking of buying one, have quite a bit of money saved over the last few years
-No
-No

Thank

HTC Vive Pro? This is the way to go?

This is interesting in my search. thank.

This is cool as hell. I assume the foot tracking would include some sort of sensor. But I'm willing to try and see how it expands.

Is the Rift really that much worse? Where I live the Vive is almost twice the price.

Isn't WMR an option?

Any of them could work for you, then, but I would lean towards getting the PC and either a Vive or Vive Pro depending on budget/patience. I feel like you probably care more about quality than price.

No, it's not twice as bad. But it's not ideal either. Any way you could try demos of both?

It is, but the Acer and some others is the same price as Rift and the Samsung is same price as Vive, so I don't see any reason to go with any of those.

>Any way you could try demos of both?
I doubt it.

Vive and Rift are nearly identical. Vive has less cumbersome setup, but Rift has better controllers.

If you want to play Rush of Blood and The Inpatient or Skyrim you need PSVR. If you want to play Fallout 4 without hassle you need Vive.

And RE7 is still only on PSVR

>Acer and some others is the same price as Rift
lolwut
on amazon the acer is $200 and the rift is $400

Yes. A PC is called VR-ready if it meets certain (quite high) CPU and GPU requirements and has enough USB ports etc.

The distinction is drawn partly for branding, and partly because there are some parts (slower CPUs, for instance) which are acceptable for non-VR gaming but will cause issues with VR.

Take the Magic Leap pill, OP.

I live in Norway, we don't have Amazon.

Holy shit it cost like 3 times as much

Yeah things are expensive here. The prices have 25% sales tax included though.

>25% sales tax

Have been following since Palmer/Kickstarter days.

Haven't pulled the trigger yet. It seems like VR is finally getting to a spot where its beginning to spread more mainstream, and we're getting some actual decent games for it.

I'm waiting for the Vive Pro, and then I'll jump in.

Really hate the trend of teleporting movement, though. This really needs to fucking die, as it defeats the whole purpose of VR, which is immersion.

At least make it an option to turn on/off.

Yeah the teleportation is stupid.
The whole reason it got started to begin with was to keep faggots from getting motion sick.

I think it's optional in some games. Honestly, walking in game made me dizzy as hell, and I never get motion sickness or dizzy ever.

Yeah so it should be an option for those of us that aren't Motionlets

>No one has mentioned OSVR yet.
C'mon guys.

osvr.org/hdk2.html

...

One thing I'm still really bummed about is the FOV.

I've tried all the headsets, but the FOV is still very disappointing to me.

FOV isn't going to improve until foveated rendering works, otherwise it's just wasted pixels you're hardly looking at. Current gen hardware has enough trouble keeping up with the shitty 110 degree screen door displays we already have.

Also before someone mentions pimax, it's shit.

I have a rift now but if I could choose again I'd get a vive (maybe pro now that it's out). Oculus software and drivers are cancer, they are bloated and annoying as fuck. Oculus Home needs to be running whenever you want to use a VR program, even if it isn't launched via Oculus Home. Oculus Home always starts at bootup and restarts if you try to close it because it installs a service that monitors its status. I actually had to create a batch script that turns on or off that service to not go insane, so that nothing Oculus would run on my system when I wasn't using the headset. And the Oculus Home installation size is several gigabytes. And of course everything is closed source and proprietary unlike much of OpenVR that the Vive uses.

Good point.

I saw some promising foveat? tech recently. Can't be too far off.

There are headsets with a FOV as wide as our natural FOV being released soon. Such as PIMAX 8K and StarVR

>8k
I mean, yeah you need that resolution to keep you from seeing the pixels, but god damn, it's going to be a while before we see GPUs that can drive that.
Even the gtx1080 can't do 4k@60 reliably for modern games.
That is, unless consumers are willing for games to revert to 2009 level graphics.

Pimax '8k' is sleazy marketing bullshit.

It's only 4k per eye, except it's not 4k either because it's really just upscaled from 2560x1440, and it's not even per eye because it alternates the image between eyes each frame. Even despite this it requires a 1080ti and has terrible response times. It works on current hardware because it's not what it claims to be.

Is this shit a meme? Every online site I go to the prices don't seem any higher than they usually do

It's worst for AMD GPUs I think, but yes it's not really a problem. The best budget VR card, the GTX 1060, is in stock with an unchanged price for me too.

The thing is you don't really need to run it at the full resolution to take advantage of the high resolution displays. For one it will remove screen door effect as the pattern of black between pixels will be too small to see unlike regular VR displays. And also some applications benefit greatly from any increased resolution and are not performance heavy enough to be a problem to run, such as video

i think vr is going to get a push into the mainstream with the oculus go and ready player one hitting theaters around the same time. i've been a big proponent of vr but have had limited access to the tech, but with everyone having access to a $200 gear vr experience i can see a lot more investments going to the industry.

before my note 5 broke i was able to run steam vr with a shitty computer running an i3 and a 1050 ti, gear vr with riftcat and nolo vr for 6dof and controllers. the set up cost me $200 minus computer and i should be able to replace the gear with the oculus go and have an even better, hacked together vr experience

Vive and it's not even close

none of those because they are still early development shit
i expect to have decent vr in 10 years

>tfw stopped looking at VR the day Oculus was bought by Facebook
Has the tech got much better and more importantly do we have good porn games for it?

>i just want it on my face

Oculus hasn't been the trendsetter for two years anyway. They let Valve and HTC take the lead and have been on catch-up ever since.

Vive is objectively superior. Rift is cheaper.

A console option shouldn't even be compared here.

Absolutely wrong. The Vive has a far better room scale experience.

These guys are wrong. Oculus has superior hand tracking and works with Oculus store and SteamVR. Only get Vive if you can afford it, have good specs and absolutely NEED room scale tracking.

Gotta support cultural enrichment somehow I guess.

Waifu Sex Simulator
Play Club
Many other good smaller porn games. You shouldn't have ever cared about the Rift. The Vive is the best way to experience waifus.

>Superior hand tracking
It has marginally better controller features that fuckall games use. In terms of tracking, as in, knowing where you hands are positionally, the Vive is slightly ahead.
>NEED roomscale tracking
Roomscale is most of the appeal of VR and it's no good to get a headset where you need to buy a third camera for an okay experience.
That's another thing, too. Nobody ever mentions the pain in the ass that is having to hook up three cameras to your PC across a room. The Vive's base stations can just sit there plugged into mains.

Everything boils down to this, OP.
Mixed Reality for screen quality, Oculus for Oculus store exclusives and controllers, vive for room tracking.

VR without roomscale is trash.

There was a lot of hype for the Rift when they first were starting out, like VR was finally going to be a thing because this time it was going to actually be quality made by people who cared, then facebook happened.
I've been away since (not because butthurt, because college) and from what I've gathered VR doesn't seem to have progressed very much in the ~4 or so years since the buyout.

I feel like this with a lot of the new technology in the works. Tesla, Apple, SpaceX, AI, PC/GPU's. and then when we hit that 10 year mark, t's going to get better 10 years after that. When do I get to enjoy the fruits of others labor?

>No one has mentioned 3Dhead yet.

Come on guys.

I've been wanting to get into VR, but I'd only use it for racing games. Thing is, I have a hard-on for Gran Turismo. Can I use other headsets with the PS4?

I'm convinced that anyone who finds the Rift acceptable is a numale living in a shoebox apartment in NYC, Boston, or SF. VR thrives on roomscale; if you don't have a space to walk around and swing your arms, you don't need to bother with VR until you upgrade your living situation.

I'm kind of amazed they thought that was going anyway. That's gotta be a venture capital scam or something, right?

It's not porn but hopefully someone makes something similar.

youtube.com/watch?v=in4FrdvXkbo

This board is not Sup Forumsoogle.

What do you think?

You know what, I don't even know why I made that post. I'll just go kill myself.

Can I have your dragon dildoes and programming socks?

currently, samsung odyssey is the best
however, new ones are coming out soon

you still need glasses with leap tho.

Then you're retarded

I downloaded Google Cardboard recently, but my phones X and Y axis' are reversed so if I look up physically the viewer moves left to right.

Any way I can fix this?

>This one fucking guy that looks at pixel count and nothing else that keeps insisting this everywhere
How much did the worst Koreans pay you?

No. You can use the PSVR headset with a PC (albeit it's a bit hacky), but not the other way around.

>A console option shouldn't even be compared here.
PSVR optics are dramatically better than Vive/Oculus (uses a smooth lens rather than fresnel bullshit). R|G|B instead of pentile, too. And it's far more ergonomic. And the games are better (RE7 VR is timed exclusive for psvr. No news of a PC version yet and you can expect other "big" vr games to get similar treatment from sony, at least for a while).

There are downsides (lower overall resolution and picture quality, no real roomscale) but it's a serious contender.

(Me)
>picture quality
Just to clarify, by this I mean level of detail in rendering/effects detail. Obviously a 1080Ti can put out a more advanced render than a PS4/Pro and still get the correct framerate. But in terms of /overall/ picture quality, as perceived by your eyes, the psvr is arguably better due to the improved optics and subpixel layout.

Wait.. don't purchase anything yet. there are new models of the vive and rift coming out this year.

Vive has better software support
Rift has better controllers (imo)
PSVR is a joke

I've been looking at the thread and some people are against the Rift, yet the rift can also do room scale when you buy an additional sensor. Also, the rift has less of a screen door effect compared to the vive. Also, the rift costs less and has better controllers and supports more games as some games only work for the vive and you get access to most of the steam vr games. The Rift is a fantastic piece of hardware. It comes with headphones built in, instead of needing to plug in another set creating a bigger mess of wires.

I wasn't gonna get a PSVR headset at first, but saw workarounds for people getting it to work on PC. Got a really good deal on it. I've tried the Rift and Vive in the past (not nearly as much as PSVR tho) and they are comparable visually. I already have PS move controllers and could get a Kinect cheaply for room scale.

I think it's a nice middle ground. Windows Mixed Reality might be the best deal tho considering you can get them for like $200. I got my Skyrim bundle for $300. I might sell the game and controllers it came with, making it cost closer to $200 for me

Flip your phone the other way.

You should revisit sairento. Lots of new content with recent updates

Question: Which is the best for porn? I'm guessing Vive, just on gut instinct.

ONE OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHER
