Is there an aesthetic, cheap portable cassette player I can buy? I think I want to make a mixtape for my girlfriend for Valentine's day but giving her a Spotify playlist is just lame, so I was thinking I could do it on a cassette tape and a walkman or something, but I'd like the cassette player to not look like a cheap piece of plastic. I also don't want to spend too much on it, probably less than $25? Any suggestions?

Pic related, this is pretty clean but I want some more suggestions.

Also, I'm just a millennial, will I be able to burn (no clue what the word is for magnetic tapes, tape I guess if it's like a VHS?) the songs onto the cassette with one of these and my computer, or do I need a separate machine? Thanks.

eBay?
Looks like there's quite a few working Sony Walkmans (haven't looked up other brands) that you can get in your budget range.

If you want the tape to not be shit try and find a type 2 or 4 cassette, and a decent home tape deck. The recording process is basically just playing audio to the player while it records the input, which means you're going to want as much quality as possible.

Damn, is there a way to put mp3s onto a cassette tape? I see stuff like this on Amazon amazon.com/Reshow-Cassette-Player-Compatible-Computers/dp/B018WBUJBS that say "Captures mp3 audio music via USB" but it only says it can turn stuff into mp3s if plugged into a computer in the features section.

Nigger it's a analog medium you can't just put digital files on it
That thing is probably junk

Yeah that's what I figured, I was just hoping that wasn't the case. So I just have to play it on a speaker and record it with the player and hope it sounds good or what?

If it's decent it should have a line input for recording

This guy tells you everything you need to know about the cassette format. Unfortunately it's just not a good format for portable listening. Mini Disk is much better.

You will want to use a real, older tape deck that has Dolby B or Dolby C noise reduction, preferably with HX Pro. Go to a thrift shop and buy any Yamaha, Sony, Panasonic/Technics tape deck that works. Then you need a 3.5MM phono-to-RCA cable to plug an MP3 player into the tape deck and a nice new tape to record on. You can find lots of old blank or gently used tapes at thrift shops, look for Type IV Metal or Type II Chrome tapes. If you just want to try recording, you can still get Type I tapes in stores. With a real deck you can boost the recording levels to more completely overwrite the original content of a used tape as well.

Anything recorded with one of those new MP3-tape players will sound like shit because there is no noise reduction at all. You will hear a very loud and obnoxious hiss over all content and they usually do not record to metal tapes, and if you try to record over a recorded tape the input power isn't high enough to mask the original content.

Scan ebay for a used walkman, look for one that has a line in and a line out. Basically you need a male to male 3.5mm that you plug from the speaker port on pc into the cassette player line in. Then just record to the tape.
Play the tape for like 5 seconds first though to make sure you’re onto the actual tape. Oh and don’t play the music at full volume or you’ll blow out the recording like crazy and it’ll sound bad.

Tape types won’t matter to much for you, Type 1 is amicable and cheap, Type 2 is better and a little more expensive, Type 4 is the best but can be anywhere from like $12 to $50 per cassette.

Cool idea bro. The one in the pic looks alright, is it available/how much?

As for the digital transfer thing, I have no idea, sorry.

>aesthetic
It's a noun, not a fuckin adjective you hipster faggot. Leave g forever

...

it's probably gonna be more headache than it's worth unless u have a vested interest in cassettes. just go buy the guardians of the galaxy or beach house tape and give that lol i dunno. all new cassette stuff is chinese junk. hipsters have been in cassettes for 2-3 years so finding nakamichi decks for $5 is a thing of the past

I just want to say this is a great idea and will come off as really sweet.

I am 39 and everyone used to have yellow sony walkman players in the 90s, getting one of those would be super cool

you would have to get something else to record with though as those are just for playing

how the fuck is aesthetic a noun

I pity kids these days for not knowing this joy

I loved mine and took super good care of it. It is in a box in my mom's basement, I would send it to OP as I have not used it in 20 years but I loved it.

Remember the rubber seal around the lid and how it locked down?

I used to listen to Siamese Dream over and over and over again and having "auto reverse" was the neatest thing ever at the time- good times

Just use MiniDisc, it's digital and better than cassette sound-wise

>mfw autoreversing playback walkmans came out

You got a shit ton of money to spend on high quality cassettes?

Sort of related and gives a run down of how shit the conversion with cheep shit.
