This thread is about the appreciation of horticulture as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.
I want a subby so bad but I don’t have $8000 for a watch
I could spend $750
What do?

For those also interested in slavshit, I just found this collection of catalogs of Soviet and Russian watches from the 50s until today. It was really nice to see my watch on a 1989 catalog.

>all these beautiful dials wasted on oversized spring drives. why even live
Jeremiah Clark
That one is about 39mm
Luis Turner
You ever wear one?
Jonathan Anderson
>that gap between the case and the crown which makes the stem visible Tbh I do like this classic Zakaz Komandirskie design and the fact it's a SS case, but for that price and that QC I'd rather go eBay hunting for an original vintage one. For me the joy of collecting Slav shit is that they are cheap, have history behind and I can flip them very easily on eBay without losing money, in fact I almost make some money every time. I own a GMT Vostok SE from Meranom and I never wear it. Wish I could sell it but it was a bday present from my older brother who knew I liked Vostoks, it was very sweet. Love my bro, I should call him more often desu.
Joshua Jackson
No but if I can wear a cocktail decently I should be ok.
Xavier Cox
me too user me too.
Brayden Lewis
>clerk in a supermarket wearing fuckhueg diesel on his soywrist Disgusting. Not only is the watch way too big, it's also ugly as hell.
Mason Cook
This is the watch in particular, I even put a Custom bezel on it but it didn’t make me like it more, sadly. This case looks fuckhuge on my bitch wrists and the dial is not easy to read with that hands and dial combination.
Austin Sullivan
come on user i only use a watch to tell the time! what more do i need it to do!?
Levi Foster
Gee, I don't know. At least not look retarded?
Austin Walker
Oh well just link the object to the though and enjoy it for what it is. IT is sort of interesting user.
Angel Rogers
Now improved :^)
Carter Parker
why do people pay so much for this?
Hudson Nguyen
Why do people pay kilobucks for a rolex? Or a JLC? Or any other given watch in that price range?
Josiah Gomez
Because they are accurate, durable, and attractive.
Luis Edwards
Too big.
Hunter Carter
I made a comment on one of the vostok "dress" watch launches saying it was too big and everyone was like "what do you mean its 40mm!" The thing is larger than the amphibia.
Mason Walker
When did Rolex start putting an indicator band on the crown?
I have never seen that before
Jace Robinson
>appreciation of horticulture yeah my watch garden is really flourishing this season
Mason Scott
>40mm being acceptable for dress watches Truly awful.
Ryan Miller
>indicator band on the crown
Isaiah Howard
how dare you user that's the windy knob
Austin Anderson
>beautiful dial >literally indistinguishable between that and a seiko 5
Henry Cruz
Not the user that asked, but so is plenty of much cheaper shit.
Hunter Gray
>>beautiful dial >>literally indistinguishable between that and a seiko 5
Nathaniel Flores
what makes a metal bracelet good vs a bad one? whenever you guys post pics they look the same to me.
Brody Sanchez
Weight. Tolerances Easy of link removal
Brayden Watson
Fit and finsih, Durability, machining accuracy. Longevity. General quality. Rolex and Tudor make the best bracelets.
Ryder Long
>reasons for disliking NATOs >??
John Scott
Longevity is generally not a huge problem anymore since most everyone quit using folded links with funky joining mechanisms.
Mason Campbell
Its not that ; If the steel is not sufficiently hardened it will scratch quickly.
Andrew Cox
I scratched the outside of one of the lugs on my watch changing the strap. The place I circled now has a perfectly straight horizontal hairline scratch.
I feel terrible and like every person will spot this immediately.
Christopher Kelly
not that guy but every steel bracelet I have ever had has scratched really quickly and every one on a preowned watch i have ever seen even rolex, has been scratched up
IMO they should make tungsten bracelets
Adrian Ortiz
Ah, I thought you were mainly referring to basic physical integrity.
Leo Barnes
scratches are expected if you actually wear a watch. i despise safe queens, user. if you invest in a nice watch you should be wearing it and that means it should have some patina as a result.
also literally no one will notice.
Easton Rodriguez

the brushed oyster bracelets seem to last way longer than the cheap Chinese stuff but in the end nothing can save them.
pls

I know I know but the watch was fucking expensive and just two months in my possession
It was mint and I fucked it up by being stupid
Jaxon Collins
Opinions on JLC - is it an old man's watch?
Brody Collins
...
Brayden Cooper
>Opinions on JLC JLC is one of the greatest Swiss watchmakers that has ever existed and should have long since supplanted Audemars Nigget in the "holy trinity"
Kayden Lewis
Are you fucking kidding me? Its a tool . It will get scratches. wears it! If you are going to beat yourself up every-time you ding your watch then they really re not for you. Its like buying expensive bushcraft trousers and then not going in the woods so they don't get dirty.
Benjamin Hughes
this
Nicholas Flores
if you care so much you can just polish the case before selling, bruh.
my rollie has scratches, you think i, or anyone else gives a shit? it's cause i'm wearing it all the time. not to mention on the 2nd hand market, people prefer their vintage watches with a bit of patina/wear.
Nolan Robinson
Wear it and stop being a pussy. Would you go buy a nice hand forged expensive axe and then leave it on your mantle so it doesn't get scratched?
Cooper Martin
Fuck. Alright.
Jaxson Barnes
Here's the damage. Sorry for the shitty pic. It looks so fucking shiny, god damn.
Can this even be polished out?
Levi Garcia
No. Not at all. Their only failing in this day and age (and it's a business/marketing failing rather than something qualitative) is that they have no decent sporty watches. The most popular models from all other brands are sporty, because the middleaged baldingfats all want to evoke the image of good health and vitality whilst cooped up in boardrooms and eating too well all the time. Even patek's nautilus outsells every other model they make (audemars might as well be renamed the "royal oakydoke watch company yo").
They're the innovative force behind richemont (apart from Lange, but since it an island unto its own in that conglomerate it's not counted). VC, IWC et al., get their complicated movements from, either complete or just the "inspiration", JLC. VC make inhousey house now, but pretty sure all the ideas came from the borrowed JLC team for the most part.
For the price, relative to everything else, I think they're great. HOWEVER, I can't find myself plonking down for them for the usual list of biases that I cart around (ie. conglomerate - fucking richemont - owned, not independent etc.,).
Main issue I have with them is the apparent contempt they hold for their customers. This is all anecdotal, but you can do your own research online or in person. I've heard accounts from both the usual watch forums as well as friends and acquaintances that own JLC's and they match up.
Might be regional, might be the luck of the draw, but I doubt it. You'll get one lucky fuck that had a good experience with servicing but then hear of some truly heinous experiences by a few others that ruins any good thing you hear about them.
So, QC and servicing horror stories hold me back (fuck ups and very long servicing turnaround by richemont). I was looking hard at that moonphase though, but in the end I just think the hands aren't proportional to the dial, but that's just my take. Still eye the reverso every time I pass them in dutyfree.
Luis Reed
Holy fucking shit, what did you even do?
you know that's an expensive watch right?
Ryan Long
I slipped.

Hunter Parker
>What was it lol? Some girl wearing a mechanical was on all fours getting brutalized
she could not have been over 14
Camden Jones
You'll never understand until you hold one in your hand. Preferably with a cheaper model, or even a Swiss watch to compare.
Isaac Williams
I didn’t know gymnasts were into watches
Justin James
>even a Swiss watch to compare oh boy he fell for the folded one thousand times marketing
Hunter Peterson
You have never held a GS and a Rolex side by side, loupe in hand.
Jace Johnson
>Just got my first watch Like, ever? Seriously? Maybe i'm showing my age (not that I'm that fucking old) but I just can't but help find that odd. I mean, everyone had a wristwatch at some point in their lives, right?. It was NECESSARY at school, even if there was a great honking multifaced clocktower that could be seen from all over the campus. Needed it to know recess time, lunch time, end of day time, dinner time.
Times they been a changin' and I didn't even notice. I gave my nephew a flikflak a christmas ago. His mother makes him wear it when we meet but I don't think he bothers otherwise.
Carter Smith
r8 my new TICKTICKTICK
David Mitchell
I don't have to and any miniscule differences in finishing don't mean shit. 99 percent of people would rather wear a rolex. You can have them serviced anywhere, they are ultra accurate, ultra durable, and have very long service intervals. Rolex watches are also visually appealing and wear nicer than gs watches. Also GS doesn't make a single watch that is comparable to any other high end swiss brand.
Ethan Butler
that is a shitty quartz watch and it does not tick.
Elijah Hall
>timex >doesn't tick
Leo Hughes
>any miniscule differences in finishing don't mean shit Then GS is not for you.
Evan Thompson
I like it.
Cameron Watson
good choice
Caleb Rivera
You are comparing a perceived edge finishing difference on a sports watch that literally goes away with wearing a watch for a few weeks. There was a thread where the transitions of Rolex, Omega, and GS were showed in macro and I certainly did not see an advantage in GS finishing. It literally comes down to the the sides and underside of hands which is not even a fair comparison as Rolex uses flat pressed white gold hands.
Jackson Murphy
There's much more to the GS's fit and finish than the exterior of the case. Pic related, for instance.
Wyatt Price
I had some cheap shitty watches when I was much younger, but I stopped wearing them in highschool because I thought they were ugly. This is the first one I bought myself.
Gabriel Long
I do fall for the whole >forudedu tsousandu-israndu timemu! But >You can have [Rolex] serviced anywhere, they are ultra accurate, ultra durable, and have very long service intervals Is important. My sister got her dateJUST serviced recently and it was the smoothest process ever. Seiko still hasn't got a proper thing going on yet with their GS service worldwide, but I mean it's still relatively early days so who knows.
Only GS model I like is a highbeat, and you gotta have that shit looked at more often, at greater expense. HB's still have to be sent to Japan I think, making for an even longer turnaround and shipping shit always incurs expense (even if it's insured by them in transit, the less something of value has to move around the better). In the end I just don't think it's worth it for me, as much as I like at least the idea or them if not the actual reality.

>with a microscope i can kind of see a tool mark imperceptible to the human eye on the side of a logo
not that guy but
rly?
Jeremiah Morris
yes I know about the dials and i respect the dial making but it doesn't add up to a watch that looks good on the wrist.
Jack Walker
If they did this quality in a package that's also nice to look at I'd buy one.
Grayson Ortiz
Is there a reason to care about different dial materials like enamel and lacquer? Both of those are inexpensive materials people deal with every now and then, right?
Dylan Powell
>with a microscope No. Under certain light you can clearly see if a hand or indice has polished or unpolished edges. Any irregularity literally shines.
Christopher Sullivan
Do you realize a submariner is meant as a diver watch and not a dress watch safe queen?
