I heard this interesting theory about innovation. It states that innovation if born of conflict and culture-clash. America is a melting pot of cultures and has made lots of innovations.
Switzerland is insular and historically neutral. It doesn't get into conflicts, it's not part of the EU, it doesn't have any large immigrant populations.
The theory makes this point: for 300 years Switzerland has been conflict free and it's invented cuckoo clocks.
