The issue with the valley is that the issue has fuck all to do w/ diversity and everything to do w/ image and PR. There's racism all over the valley and its centered moreso on non-american 1st/2nd gen immigrants coming here and not understanding that it isn't ok to be a racist p.o.s. The discrimination i've faced in the valley mainly comes from Indians/Asians. White engineers are just as screwed as me from what I can see. Management is a whole other ballgame. Here's the real issue in tech. Tech is:

1) Toxic. To everyone.

2) Interviewing is more about culture and background than ability.

With regards to #1, women complain about harassment, and it's unfortunate, but they don't realize that men are constantly shit on by their peers. I've never seen so much drama queen bullshit and backstabbing as I've seen from other men in the work environment.

Regarding the second point, tech interviewing is basically a bunch of bullshit designed to eliminate as many candidates as possible, whether the elimination actually increases odds of finding a superior candidate or not. Modern cover-your-ass culture means that if there's a bad hire and you get blamed for it, you have to have a high rejection rate that you can wave your hands at and say, "see? I hired the best candidate possible and they still failed! It's not my fault!"

I remember reading a comment on Hacker News by a Google employee who off-handedly said that he couldn't believe a candidate didn't even skim over "the red book" before coming in for an interview. I'd never heard of the red book in my life. Turns out, it's the nickname for a particular algorithms book used as several of the "top ranked CS universities".

Mind you, he didn't just think candidates should brush up on their algorithmic knowledge (which, in itself is ridiculous for 99% of jobs) he literally expected them to review the exact same algorithms book that HE learned from.

When people interview in tech, they look for clones of themselves, rather than looking for a competent, skilled coworker. The amount of myopic bullshit I've seen coworkers pull when interviewing is staggering.

Tech interviews led by the fags of the valley have to be the worst process known to man for screening a canditate. For years people have highlighted what a farce this is yet it still is the norm. Honestly 10 years ago it seemed for a while that we were moving collectively towards massive technological advancements and societal steps to launch us into a new renaissance. At least based on what I gathered from the circles I was running in at the time. Even this website was an indicator to some degree of the changes we all seemed to be craving.
It felt as though we were on the cusp of something great; a tipping point as it were.
The world began to see massive social change which was leading way to a more enlightened people. Those who put collective good in mind so that we could all move forward technologically rather than hold each other back.
Then something began to stir. It seemed that the old world money didn't want this change since they hedged all their bets on their current empires slowly consuming more wealth via the current/old power structures put it place. Ever fearful they pushed forced their way down to the grassroots to start fracturing this new movement before it could get any real momentum.
This is only part of the story however, because as any look at history can tell you change is slow. This fight to turn the direction of humanity's movement back to the crumbling roads we've been on has been around forever.
We sway with the winds back and forth as the fight rages around us. Both sides claiming all the evils of the world on the other, and eventually we all begin losing ourselves in the fight.
Few remain dedicated to shrugging off the unimportant battle, and remaining solely focused on extending the reach of our species.
Although I am convinced that more and more will take on that stance as time wears on, as we always have in the past.
Eventually we will advance, but I hope that it will be fast enough to preserve us as the end may be closer that we think if we dare move too slow.

I wrote out a longer response but accidentally deleted it. TL;DR Discrimination lawsuits are real, so companies are aggressively pro-diversity for deniability purposes. Being hit with a "Google discriminates against women" headline is really bad for PR, so hiring as many women as possible is the best way to cover your ass.
