If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine. 1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

which repository should i add to debian to download iwlwifi intel wifi drivers ?
what's the most stable/easiest to use non-systemd distro and why is it alpine?
John Miller
Just install matching kernel headers
Arch doesn't even have it in the official repos
Gentoo
Leo King
MX Linux
from last thread:
Is it easy to switch from NVidia to AMD and vice versa? Do you need to uninstall the open source driver?
Leo Ortiz
If I'm looking to set up a hard drive specifically for seeding torrents (mostly TV/anime & FLAC music) should I bother with file system compression? Or can this kind of stuff not be compressed any futher? I read some stuff about zstd being able to be trained on data sets to provide better & faster compression but I don't know if that can be done on a file system level.
Robert Diaz
Sup Forumsentooman goodmorning. I have a memepad x220 and i installed linux (deepin) for the first time today. The wifi isn't working and that's weird because under lspci the intel card is recognized, the iwlwifi package is installed but under ifconfig the card doesn't show up. I tried with my t430 wificard (the same intel) and it also didn't worked. it's like the card is disabled but i can't manage to reable it again or maybe there is some kind of problem with drivers clashing together. On windows everything werk just right. Same shit on AntergOS. Wat 2 do?
Oliver Myers
Define lots of things. I'm on Debian and the only "boot screen" I've had beside grub is login.
Dominic Gonzalez
hey Sup Forums so i have a rasberrypi that has an external 3tb hdd attached to it, it is a headless setup, i have used gdisk to partition the drive but when i lsblk it doesn't show up, fdisk -l doesn't show anything either. any ideas whats wrong?
Blake Clark
Video and music codecs are already highly specialised compressors. That's the entire point of them. Don't bother with filesystem compression.
Jacob Moore
Ah, yeah that's true. Thanks.
William Sullivan
How big should my root partition be on a 2tb drive
Isaac Ramirez
20 GiB
Robert Cruz
That wont fill up? Im encrypting, so to my knowledge i cant resize it later.
Alexander Kelly
fvwm is really fucking powerful too bad the config syntax is ass
Nathaniel Reyes
You´ll be fine if you keep /home separate
Sebastian Jackson
I installed this piece of shit DE on arch and it fucked with my GRUB settings.
Its good but rough in many places. Could outpace GNOME if non-Chinese forked it.
Wyatt Perry
Install Ubuntu until you learn about drivers.
Jaxon Smith
AntergOS had the same DE. This may be the issue. I clearly said driver are ok and I reinstalled and re activated iwlwifi.
Thomas Kelly

>tfw installing the superior piece of engineering known as debian over the steaming pile known as fedora Feels good
Jackson Lee
that feel when can't get wifi working with debian because brainleet. Feels bad man. I want to quit.
Nicholas Green
>tfw your packages are 2 years old
Zachary Bailey
40-50GB if you keep /home on another partition.
Chase Campbell
Get the wifi firmware off debians site and drag it to the firmware folder of the flash drive you burned the installer to
Anthony James
You have the following extra options: -replace your internal wifi card with an atheros card from ebay ($5-$10). Atheros card work with libre firmware thus every distro supports them OOB -buy an atheros USB wifi, guess the same applies -buy a ralink USB wifi. Cheap shit, medicore quality and needs non-free firmware, but the fw is distributable and the drivers are libre so after installing the firmware-ralink package they will work just fine.
Aiden Walker
Seriously though, does anyone use Alpine as a desktop/development environment? I'd much prefer a distro without systemdicks that also has a large community backing (I believe alpine is affiliated with docker), but I keep hearing conflicting answers as to the stability and sanity of a non-server alpine setup.
Camden Kelly
I've literally never heard of Plymouth until now and I've been using Linux for years.
Jaxson Taylor
Is there a reason why I shouldn't use freeBSD over some Linux distro if I can code my own shit in C or C++?
Luke Jenkins
if you "code" "shit" then don't use BSD or GNU+Linux, go get a mac and fuck off from the thread.
Aaron Diaz
assblasted sperg detected
I do scientific computing and computer graphics, thank you very much.

In libre writer how do I make pic related behave like Office word? When I try to move the bottom indent, both of the indents would move instead of the bottom one only.
Adam Murphy
GUH-NOME
Jonathan James
install WPS office
Justin Stewart
press Ctrl while trying to move it.
Thomas Gomez
Thanks that worked. Is there a way to make the top one moves with the bottom one as a whole? I tried CTRL but didn't help.
Jace Reed
Either the free software community kills the GNOME faggots or they kill the community. There is no 3rd way.
Blake King
Wont happen we are stuck with these faggots

Isn't kernel 4.15 supposed to be out already, why can't I update to it

when i try to apt-get install something on debian, i get Media change: please insert the disc labeled 'Debina GNU/Linux 9.3.0 _Stretch_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20171209-12:11' in the drive '/mdeia/cdrom/' How do I overcome this? Why is this happening, why can't i just get a normal instaliation like in ubuntu or arch after typing YES ?
Jackson Morales
as root open /etc/apt/sources.list in a text editor and remove the cdrom lines from the start.
After it, run apt-get update. This is happening because you instaled debian from a non-netinst iso which has a whole bunch of packages on it.
Easton Rogers
>dropbox >manjaro
how?
William Diaz
>manjaro
1. slap yourself in the face for installing a distro because it was high on the distrowatch list 2. install debian/antix/ubuntu/opensuse/anything that is not a fucking meme 3. wow dropbox works OOB
Jordan Garcia
so you don't know either?

Okay I just switched from AMD to Nvidia, painless in Ubuntu. Going from a 260X to a G210, just enough to display two monitors since I no longer game. Do I need the proprietary driver?
Andrew Cook
su Idk
Jose Sullivan
Proprietary Nvidia drivers perform far better than the FOSS ones. If you don't game or use any sort of 3D application where performance matters, you may be able to get away with the FOSS drivers.
Although, I never tested the FOSS drivers myself. So they 'might' have some bugs idk.
Adam Wilson
pacaur -S dropbox?
Christopher Hall
how to hide a daemon from ps?
Thomas Allen
Make an alias the greps it out
Connor Perez
pacaur is dead, use trizen
Leo Gray
Okay I installed them. I'll use the FOSS drivers when Nvidia stops supporting my card in 2019. Too bad it has a hard time playing 1080p in vlc.
Benjamin Martin
Which wm is easiest for ricing? i3, dwm, awesome, openbox???
Lucas Brooks
awesome if you don't care too much about all the minimalism autism
Alexander Peterson
Anyone using Epiphany/Web knows how to install userscripts like 4chanX on it?
Camden Sanchez
how to get rid of screen tearing on debian?
Oliver Anderson
I'm new to Linux. I'm considering switchign from Windows to Mint. Guess I'll keep dual boot for some games. But anyway I wanted to know what linux distro is this? Looks fun
Angel Hughes
Could be any distro, but it's using i3 window manager
Bentley Martinez
Dwm or i3
Carson Lee
Don't use Mint. Use Ubuntu (or variants such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu-mate etc), Debian or openSuse.
Caleb Morgan
came here to say this. I'm actually running i3 on Linux Mint currently. Just open the terminal and do 'sudo apt install i3' and it should install.
But i3 comes very, very bare bones by default. It includes the freedom to mold it into anything ever.
Connor White
When will people learn that distro doesn't matter I use arch btw
Eli White
thank you dear Sup Forums. and I gonna think again about distro for sure

Trying to add an open as root context menu to dolphin following this guide iwf1.com/how-to-add-open-as-root-entry-manually-to-kdes-dolphin-file-manager ive added it but it says "Could not find the program 'kdesu'" when i run the menu button i added. I tried installing kdesu but it says it could not find it in the repositories, so i got it off the debian site and manually installed the package. I still get the same error after installing it. How do I get this to work?
Brayden Young
I'm a new CS student and I'm looking to install a Linux distro (currently running the W10 botnet). I'm looking for something fast/lightweight that has lots of support in case things go sideways. Got any (non-meme) suggestions?
Juan Wilson

Can I expect performance problems if I run a debian server baremetal from a usb2 stick but run every other service in VMs off a SSD?
Juan Brooks
>...and why is it Slackware
Brandon Harris
add contrib and non-free to repo sources sudo apt cache search (get your card from lspci) sudo apt install linux-firmware or sudo apt install whatever driver you need (the cache search will tell you which is for what)
Jackson Carter
>debina What the hell are you using
Matthew Bailey
fixed now, thx for help though.
Michael Reed
Openbox from my own personal experience (most is gui)
William Hall
Not a problem of Debian. Which DE are you using?
AntiX linux. Runs on 70mb ram and its underlying functionality is SU-PERB. You won't find a better alternative to debian that is lightweight
Ian Sanders
>tfw using a dark GTK theme makes part of an application unusable because there's white text on a white background
Carter Miller
Is there a way to get python-evdev on Debian stretch? I need it for emulating an XB360 controller
Brandon Thomas
Install any gtk2 theme instead of gtk3
Tyler King
If none in repos and pip died again, do it from source
Jace Gomez
Isn't arc dark a GTK2 theme?
William Nguyen
What things should I learn to go from beginner to "advanced" Linux user? I understand just learning how to do stuff you normally do/need to do but after that, I tend to stay in the same cycle.
Jace Gutierrez
did you see the photoshop post here and on /r/linux two weeks ago? the guy running photoshop cc 2018 on wine 3. did you try installing it? I did and it's kind of ok but buggy. ghosting tooltips and you can't see the topbar with file edit etc when using it with i3, no problem with openbox
Joshua James
There are ports of GTK2 themes to GTK3
Nicholas Ramirez
Try to do everything via terminal and just use it...nothing more to it. If you run into a problem, google it, use it, learn it.
Isaac Howard
It's void linux
Owen Sanchez
Not easy, not good, meme distro, i rate bait/10
Anthony Murphy
You've never used void linux, you are the actual bait
