If you unzip a file that was set to modified in 1996, the date will be extracted with it.

What's confusing me is why a ROM of Mike Tyson's Punch Out (!) would have been last modified in 1996. I don't recall NES emulators or the concomitant ROMs associated therewith being available until at least 2003, but I may have been late to join the bandwagon (and I didn't even realize you could get an NES-to-USB adapter until like two years ago...).
If you (or anyone else) might provide any insight into how that makes sense, it would be very, very much appreciated.

Nes emulators have been around since the 90s. The first good one was NESticle in 1997, but other, crappy pay for emulators are older then that.

I may not have graduated college if I knew that, but my first memory of them at all was at a coffee shop in about 1999, when I heard the theme song from "Kid Icarus" in the background, and my friend Mikey was playing it on his laptop (I want to say a blue Toshiba "laptop replacement" with a way overloaded OS considering the clutter of proprietary and unnecessary programs (what you'd call "apps" today), which I only discovered when I later bought one for my then-wife, and which he was almost surely smart enough to remove), and I almost cried when I saw that that dream I had when I was about 12 where I was selecting NES games from an imaginary menu on my Apple IIGS came true.
