Above the Ruins - Nationalist Post-Punk
youtube.com
Taking cues from Julius Evola's tome "Men Among the Ruins," Above The Ruins enjoyed a brief existence promoted by the British National Party of which Wakeford had become a member. Apart from his presence, the line-up of the band has never been revealed due to the band's open political deployment. Rumors proliferated, but none of them were ever confirmed.
The record was first circulating on tape as a demo in 1984, but was then reprinted on vinyl in 1986, with "Storm Clouds Over Europe" missing and now presumably lost. No one has ever found and released the tape online. Considering its short length, you'd be forgiven if you thought of this as an EP or mini-LP.
Above the Ruin's music is within the vein of early Death in June, but the approach is much more straightforward, less clumsy and more akin to darkwave not unlike Joy Division, Warsaw or Killing Joke. Despite the production being very rough shod (keep in mind this was originally recorded as a demo) and Wakeford's clumsy performance (especially those nearly atonal vocals on "Under Western Skies"), the band manages to sound professional. The "kicking" songs like Waiting, the title-track and Progress are quite enjoyable even if a pinch awkward.
Choice lyrics come from the song "Roses", based on two poems written by Paul Comben who published a small collection of Nationalist poetry called "1957, Before the Storm". Little is known about Comben, who disappeared after the '80s, but his work strongly influenced Above the Ruins:

When young soldiers march past roses
Roses bleed young blood
And red drops from the rose bud
To kiss a soldier's head
Red drops of the rose blood
Crimson petals of the dead
In the final living seconds
An atmosphere of grief
At the morning of your ending
Gives way to timeless sleep
You may think of times are wilting
As you struggle for your breath
But the only kiss that answers
Is the frozen kiss of death
My mother likes to think that I died quickly
My father likes to think that I died well
The telegram had lied but quite discretely
Since I ended up as mincemeat and a smell
For the moment that my mother has her comfort
My father has the strength of his beliefs
Until, that is, they come and all is over
To the crosses that have no one underneath
...
My absolute favorite from Above the Ruins is "Progress" since it's such a harrowing indictment of Communism.
Again based on a poem by Paul Comben.
vocaroo.com
All the same height and all the same weight
All the same voice and much the same shape
Pressed to a pattern and shoved into a line
Bled by the rich and led by the blind
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress
Such is the joining of people to state
The state is the father, the mother and mate
It knows how you think, it says what you need
With total conviction it prints what you read
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress
Mongrelise, centralise, kept to your place
All the same colour and all the same race
Freedom is freedom from dissident views
Eyes full of terror and authorised news
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress
It's best to be humble and do as you're told
To speak as you're taught and die when you're old
For such is the meaning of Marx and his words
Wine for the reds and chains for the herd
And death to the swine who are killed good and red
And death to the swine who are killed good and red
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress
Progress, progress, there's progress
And you get a life and we go to hell
And this is the way, welcome to hell

Question: why are dillinger four so good but any band similar to dillinger four are so bad? IMO these guys are the last great "punk rock" band.
Forgot pic. It's probably my least favorite D4 album but its still great.

this is why i advocate throwing shit at post-millenial punkers and try real, real hard to get crusters' dogs taken away and euthanized
Do you like Lockin Out records? Of course you do, you don't have shitty taste. Here is there first 30 or so releases.
I saw freedom with foundation and weekend nachos a few months ago. Broke my nose moshing. 10/10 show.
If any of you guys like noise punk with guys that actually can play, check them out. The Cabbageheads. Saw them open for MDC last month and they were just energy in human form. Half of their songs don't even have set lyrics, but you'd never be able to tell. This is their only release so far.
How were MDC? I wanted to go but tickets sold out really quickly here.
freedom is gnarly as fuck. i've played magic cards with freeman on more than one occasion.
Sounds punk as fuck. Anything off triple B is usually pretty good.
Decent band
Well this is pretty fucking sweet
I saw turnstile live a few weeks ago. That was fun. I would recommend that live show to people who don't even like hardcore.
punk is 4 gays
...
contribute you lazy cunts
Goddamn good news, that Single Mothers single with the dreamcatcher on it is one of my favorite recent punk releases.
Anybody like FIDLAR around here?
Thinking I'll check out their new album tonight
Fine, I guess I will.

im quite new to punk, always been a metalhead, but thanks guys for this thread, fucking stoked to find all this new shit to listen to.
ive been playing this recently, thoughts?
top choice mate! amebix (pic related) is great. if you like that dark and atmosphery crust i would suggest you check out rise of the serpent men by axegrinder!
cheers man, il check em out. ive been finding it hard to find stuff, because i just dont really know the scene, genres, subgenres, the highs, the lows, or the history of punk. i mean everyone knows the sex pistols, misfits, black flag etc, but i wanna dig deep into the archives and find those gems. unfortunately i havnt come across a "Metallum" for punk so it makes it real hard, but threads like this are awesome, its like getting to see a whole new scene.
you know any encylopedia of punk sites?
this is just metal. this thread is about punk, though.
Just heard london calling. Amazing album 2bh
Check out this stuff
If you like the metal / punk combo for older bands check out strife, earth crisis, leeway, and cro mags (especially their first 2 albums). For newer bands check out power trip (if you already haven't), mizery, higher power, soul search, minus, and forced order.
Weekend nachos are not a metal band. I'm not going to get into an argument over whether they are powerviolence or hardcore but they're somewhere in that area.
I finally saw these guys in chicago a few weeks ago. Hands down the best punk show I've ever been to.
