So I got one of those for almost nothing

So I got one of those for almost nothing.
Is there still some fun to be had with it or should I just put it in the basement/resell it for the case?

[spoiler]Finding old software for it seem to be a real bitch

Fellow g5 owner, what's ur specs?

2.0 DP
Radeon 9600
8GB RAM

Have an old DC 2.3 G5 updated to a geforce 6600 gfx card. Installed a version of ubuntu for ppc and it ran better than osx 10.4. These old machines run hot and LOUD. I just dont see the point unless you like the novelty.

>These old machines run hot
Weren't they liquid cooled?

So you have one of the big ones.
I am currently running OS X 10.5.8 on a 500GB HDD which isn't terrible to use for something so old.
>These old machines run hot and LOUD.
I noticed the fans sometimes seem to randomly turn up to 100% for a few seconds while blowing out tons of hot air but then they go quiet again rather fast.
It happens rarely and otherwise the system isn't terrebly loud for such an old machine. But to be fair I didn't use it for any intensice task yet.
>updated to a geforce 6600 gfx
Was thinking about doing the same. But how big is the difference? And I am still not sure what the best possible upgrade even would be with an AGP version. 6800 ULTRA? X850 XT?

Only the 2005 one with two dual cores I think.
Makes me wonder how much heavier it made the thing.

>Finding old software for it seem to be a real bitch
Debian, OpenBSD, or RHEL have the best software support for 64-bit PowerPC. I used to run Debian on my G5 but I recently migrated it to RHEL and it's working well with XFCE. It runs nice and cool too. I have all the essentials for basic desktop computing like Firefox 58, Libre Office, GIMP, and VIM and Nano. I can even run Windows 7 under QEMU, and the performance is probably comparable to running it on a really shitty Core2 laptop, so it's good enough for some ancient games and legacy software. Overall it's not that bad.

FreeBSD has a PPC-64 distro as well.

>FreeBSD
pfffffttt hahahahaha

IIRC you can flash the rom of a geforce 7800 or radeon x1900 AGP card and it will work in a powermac (the best 2 cards i'm aware of)

Install gentoo

NetBSD is it then.

>the performance is probably comparable to running it on a really shitty Core2 laptop
I highly doubt that. Celeron maybe, but not Core 2, not when a Mac mini from 2006/7 can btfo of it in most tasks.

My 1.4 GHz dual core ThinkPad from 2006 running Windows 7 32-bit natively is only slightly less shit than the same OS being emulated on the G5 in QEMU.

I'm running gentoo on my G5 quad.
Where did you find a rhel ppc64 iso?

I bought it.

access.redhat.com/downloads/content/279/ver=/rhel---7/7.1/ppc64le/product-downloads

Sounds good and they are pretty cheap, thank you.

David pls

I have a DP 2.0 and a SP 1.8

In real life tasks how big will the difference in performance/usablitiy be if the other components are the same?

Not much, the Watercooled versions are all long dead - since the Asetek AIO's used only had a service life of 5 years.

>Finding old software for it seem to be a real bitch
You just gotta know what versions of the software you're looking for, tons of staples are out there, plus special shit like TenFourFox/Classilla and Tigerbrew.
Or you can just go the route if you don't care how boring it is.
They're definitely a novelty system overall, but they're still beautifully designed, well built and fun to work with.
Apple's "official" benchmarking states the 2.0DP is "45% faster" than a 1.6SP, which if we just take it as a ballpark estimate, it's probably not really a huge deal either way unless you're going to throw a lot of multi-threaded workloads at it. I'd always take a 2.0DP with all other things equal, though. I've got a similar situation and I'm probably just going to turn my 1.8 into an OpenBSD server.
Rated life means fuck all, though. There's still plenty of watercooled Quads out there that will probably last a long time as long as they're properly taken care of.

>beautifully designed, well built
This is what makes them so intriguing

On the back of my G5 are a bunch of serial stickers but finding the corresponding Apple software seems impossible.
Also what is the deal with Macintoshgarden?

So how much tinkering has Sup Forums gone with the G5?

Is flashing video gards a pain because of different card BIOS?

Is it possible to upgrade the CPU?

Use it
>Finding old software for it seem to be a real bitch
Not even remotely. Tigerbrew, source code, and the applications that still support PowerPC Mac OS X should be sufficient.

You've got the same specs as except for the RAM, you've got 2x as much of that. Enjoy your new desktop

I've installed a 4x 2.5" hotswap bay with a SATA expansion card, SCSI card, and GbE NIC. CPU upgrades are possible, mine's got dual 970MPs (only one core active in each, northbridge doesn't support dual-core processors) and initially came with 970s

>mine's got dual 970MPs (only one core active in each, northbridge doesn't support dual-core processors) and initially came with 970s
Now that is interesting.
So it is possible to swap them. I have a 2.3 DC 970MP and want to put it in a G5 that came with a 1.6 SP 970 so I guess that works. Glad to hear.

How about replacing the logic board? Are the PSUs in G5s that came with an AGP logicboard different than PSUs that came with PCIe G5s?

Processors with different frequencies won't work unless you over/underclock the FSB to match iirc. As for the logic boards and PSUs, I'm also interested

I see. That is why I just wanted to swap the logicboards including processors at first.
Plus I have tons of 2GB DDR2 sticks lying around. 1GB DDR not so much.
Also a GTX7800 PCIe graphics card. And CR2032s instead of thise bulky batteries the older G5s take.
It would be just so much more convenient.

Use it.
If you don't want to, sell it.

Did you force update the firmware? I've upgraded from single to dual core too and it works perfectly fine.

Got a link? I'll have to give that a shot when I get a new PSU

>Finding old software for it seem to be a real bitch
Just go to MacintoshGarden.org.

You guys made me curious and I read a little on everymac.

So let me get this straight the first gen G5s supported up to an for the time insane 8GB of RAM but some of the 2004 versions only support 4? And the last gen 2005 ones went even further to 16GB?

Why the step down in the middle tho?

The step down was a cheaper model with only four memory slots instead of eight

I see

beautiful

Install gentoo

Which Final Cut runs on a G5?
Pro 4? 6?

What do you think about using it's as a home server? I have a fetish for these things since I first saw them, would be nice to find a use for them.

I used mine as one for years, worked great

>wellbuilt
>appleshit
Good joke.

Did the guy literally cut cheese with it?

Essential PPC Leopard software besides TenFourFox and Libre Office?

grindr

Have you been to Macintosh garden?
It's full with Apple abandonware, you will even find OS X installation images.

Neat

Install Ubuntu Mate

>Photoshop doesn't work on case sensetive drives
What a bunch of shit

Has anybody any experience with bending the case back in shape?
Especially the lover part

I cannot get a workign kernel, i've been struggeling with it for a few days now.. Might pirate RHEL, lol

Wrong board.

You just need to create a case-insensitive DMG

>gut the trash parts
>make $300 hackintosh
>sell for $3000 to gullible macfag

As if I could do that. I never owed anything made by Apple before

I actually see the opposite happening on ebay quite regulary.

>few weeks ago this one guy sold a 5.1 Mac Pro for 83€ because he described it as a Power Mac 5

>So I got one of those for almost nothing.
give it back Jamal.

So what PCI did you get for your G5?

fuck off retard

lel why would that upset you

Give it back jamal.

It's easy. You know how to use Google, don't you?

He bought a mac. That automatically subtracts 50 IQ.

Because you ESL's have no reading comprehension

ebin

Give it back Jamal.

>HURR YOURRE A NIFGFER
Fuck off I guaran-fucking-tee that I am whiter than you are.

Nobody doubts that you are a pasty liberal

>steals a mac
>I guaran-fucking-tee that I am whiter than you are

fuck off CIA niggers no one cares about your false-flagging

>steals a mac
>calls someone else nigger
Jamal...

That guy wasn't me

Give it back Jamal.

No the guy didn't want it anymore he was even thinking about selling me his other mirrored drive doors G4 for almost nothing

>PPC Mac
>lgbt
newfags gtfo

Tyrone...

>The good old days before Apple went to shit
I bet people said the same during the PPC days about the Apple II

>before Apple went to shit

Well yeah that is my point m8

>about the Apple II
They didn't have to wait until PPC.

kek they really peaked with their personal computers in 77 didn't they

>slamming it on the table makes it work again
Is that an Onion article? This is too good to be true
