I own an S8. It's a great piece of tech with a lot of neat features (Dex, simultaneous bluetooth, VR, etc) but it the glass is soft and tends to scratch easily so one needs to be very careful with it.

Not the same guy you were replying to but my issue with cheap phones is they are usually not ip68/67 rated. These days it should not be a problem to add that to most phones. Especially ones like those that cost $400-$500

Not him but because of my job I am outside in the elements alot in various conditions. I need to have that IP68/67 rating on my phone just for that extra layer of protection. Not having that at this price is kind of ridiculous. I ended up going with the Galaxy S8+ last month because of this. We all know the S9 will be pretty much the same.

Honor 7x for 200 is the best deal right now but has a 5.93" screen.

That is a Huawei phone. Check out their Honor 6x. Sony has phones in their compact line closer to what you're looking for. Huawei/Honor is just leading the pack with good phones at a great value. I would really suggest the 7x even though you say it's too big now. It even comes with a clear case in the box so you don't have to hunt one down.

I think the thing is that Samsung has major carrier support worldwide and people still rely on contracts in most countries. That means they can get the newest Samsung for $100-$200 at first and their bill is only adding $9 to it. People take that instead of dropping $500 at once with a company they don't know and risking that much money. Plus like I said even regular people know they want a phone with some type of water resistance these days. Like it or not it has become a feature expected to be standard.

The 5T is great if it meets your needs but most people are just preparing themselves for an accident or two.

Same guy again..check out the Honor 8. 5.2 inch screen and everyone I know that has had one loves it. Honor 9 is also out.
