By this point, it's more like
>What's an IRC?
irc is for perl programmers that post on usenet newsgroups
ie neo luddites
>t. discord soymale
>using discord for anything other than voice chat
This.
Discord keeps undesirables out of irc ensuring it doesn't get ruined like the rest of the web did. IRC needs to be archaic so fucktards stay out of it
>Using anything but FOSS and reliable mumble for voice chat
>using discord at all instead of based mumble
honestly this, the only part of IRC that really got hurt by discord was quakenet gamer shit
>voice chat
>not just using text because you have a high pitched voice and you're ashamed of it
>mumble
stop memeing. mumble is garbage.
can you name 1 thing wrong with it? it does voice perfectly and has a really nice minimal mode
There's still some niche gamer stuff on irc, but isn't it mostly limited to 90s first person shooters?
pretty much just quakeworld and xonotic, q3 cpma switched to discord and reflex switched to discord but reflex is complete ass anyway and only 10 year old redditors play it so it makes sense. you can still find a counter-strike pracc on irc but it's a lot harder than a few years ago. a few years ago I could easily find cs and q3 gathers on quakenet, xonotic like 5 games/day, now it's like once a week.
Who matrix here
I use both, what now?
I don't know what irc is or does sorry
>irc isn't shit now
September never ends.
Go comb your neck
Daily reminder that nothing on IRC is encrypted (not even your login credentials) and everything, including your IP, is easily visible and loggable by anybody.
>b-but I use it cuz imma leet haxor
>.t brainlet
Ventrilo?
is this 1999
IRC is capable of SSL connections
Not if there's a host mask. Which every server hosted in a non-third world country does. Nice kiking though. Not to say anything against discord either.
>minimal mode
UwU?
what is discord? the new whatsapp?
Typical uneducated response. They convert once they learn the advantages though.
>use a tls-only server or channel
>use a proxy, or better yet don't care because nobody can do much with your ip
>use a non-shit client to change/hide your other information
>implying discord doesn't log everything as well
really gives me a thinker
Idk how mumble is but the name sounds retarded so I'll never use it
>I don't have a social life
Discord is still the best app for communicating in groups, end of
>what is SSL
>what is Tor
>what is host mask
>what is a bouncer
Hexchat is my ircfu. OwO
IRC doesn't do anything discord, TS3, and mumble can do
>using a gui client
And it doesn't need to for what it is.
Match that with some programming socks and you’ll be good to go ;)
I don't have a rms level neckbeard. I just use irc to download anime and old hentai games.
So how do you stay connected when you aren't at your computer? Can you chat on your phone/laptop/tablet/desktop and have the same interface and logs across all those devices, seamlessly switching from one to the other?
>what is a bouncer
>what is ZNC
But can you access past conversations and read what happened while you were away from all your different clients?
Daily reminder that nothing on Discord is encrypted (not even your login credentials) and everything, including your IP, is easily visible and loggable by anybody that matters.
>b-but I have friends and they cuck me into using bad software
>what are logs
>what is a buffer
this. underrated post.
discord is the ultimate soyboy hangout
is correct but also take a step back and reevaluate your life if you really need to be THIS connected. Either way IRC can do anything it if you want it to... unlike soyboy-cord
Nigger you are defending Discord and other shit applications to record everything for surveillance, kys.
Anybody here unironically use Matrix?
The difference being that with Discord it's on a remote server you have no control over whereas with IRC you can do that all on your own server.
If it can be used as a server for other IRC clients I am in, but if is just another attempt at breaking everything no.
This, so much this.
From what I've seen, it seems to have compatibility with IRC. When I use the Riot client for Matrix, it lets me search, join, and chat in IRC servers, while still being able to chat in Matrix rooms.
As for having a Matrix server that can be accessed with an IRC client, never tried...
>free
>organized
only reasons i use it over teamspeak
>i don't use discord, it's too popular
...
I've been using IRC since 2003 when it was at its height of popularity. Don't confuse popular services with spyware.
Absolutely nothing wrong with not using things ruined and infested with normalfaggots.
>you will never join #cutegang
>infested with normalfaggots
You mean the target audience?
>not using two styrofoam cups connected by a piece of string to communicate with your friends
>Not using smoke signals
ITT: brainlets who can't mumble
You must be 18 to post on this website.
>not using thunderclaps and assorted screeches
I refuse to touch anything that uses Electron.
You don't have to. Just use the website. As a bonus they won't be able to see what's on your computer.
>letting the botnet mine your fagboy voice
wew
Install gen--
Erm-- I mean mumble
>Don't use electron
>Just use I can't believe it's not electron™
riot is shit.
matrix's decision to use json and https for the protocol is shit. although i know they did it for library/cross-language support, it's still disgusting for binary data and signed/encrypted messages.
matrix-to-irc gateway is broken.
their main python implementation is slow as balls and gets really unresponsive on very large servers. maybe this can be fixed, but for now, i know for a fact that IRC servers (not networks, but single servers) can support tens of thousands of connections without breaking a sweat.
they're going in the right direction but their execution is shit in so many ways.
pic related, i'm working on a multi-protocol commandline client (irc, matrix, discord, whatever). first implementation will be in python because of development speed but i might move it to C when it's working
finally someone who knows what the fuck they're talking about
Do you happen to have a git up? I would love to take a look through what you have written.
yeah: git.volatile.bz
i'm writing it because right now i use weechat and i see a whole bunch of issues with it, at least for the way i use it.
it runs using client/daemon model, so your IRC, XMPP, matrix, etc. servers run under separate processes adding to ease of development, code quality, and security. you can choose to run these on the same computer, connected via UNIX socket, or you can do it like a bouncer and put the daemon on another server.
other priorities are modern IRC support (SASL, IRCv3, standards conformance), scripting, and message filtering (everything is in one window unlike weechat or irssi, but with advanced filtering this will make it easier to deal with)
btw i know my git commits are disgusting but i only use it to throw code up on the web right now. later i'll make a "cleaner" repository for the working product
That seems like a good thing.
I've been on IRC for most of my childhood and all of my adult life. I don't think I'm a neo luddite. It's just the only place I know of where I can find people like me and strike up a quick conversation. Discord is a bunch of memes, children fighting on the mic, etc etc. It's Yahoo Chat 2.0 is you ask me. I am glad it exists because shitheads like that will find those groups instead of coming to EFNet. As funny as it is when they get doxxed, ddosed, and run off it's still better when they don't show up in the first place.
>As funny as it is when they get doxxed, ddosed, and run off
except that never fucking happens anymore because storm, ayocaine, and whoever else either got lives or got really high and forgot what irc was. there's virtually no destructive drama on efnet anymore, it's just chronic shitposting
It still does happen occasionally.

>drama from my channel
lmao
As you can clearly see entitlement back then is no different than it is today. Only now it's kids with a "server" instead of just a few channels.
>he doesnt connect through his bnc hosted in an offshore vps
yes
>or better yet don't care because nobody can do much with your ip
This is how you get ddosed when you annoy me. Worse things can happen depending on who you piss off even if you do hide your home IP.
maybe i'm biased because i have a dynamic home IP and an OVH server IP
Pretty much everyone has a dynamic home ip. Most users with cable modems are too dumb to know how to change theirs. If you're cucked with a modem router combo it might not be so easy.
Your ip could lead to you getting doxxed though. I don't know if it's as easy as it used to be but in the bad old days those things were a frequent occurrence. Best way to avoid that or getting ddosed and having to change your ip in the first place is not acting like a fucking faggot on IRC. I learned my lesson in 2002 when I was taken out for more than a week by ddos. I didn't know anything about how cable modems work so I couldn't get a new ip, ISP wasn't helpful.
Beyond all this you need to have at least basic security measures in place on your server. I use OVH too. Yeah it's hard as fuck to ddos it off but that doesn't mean it's a good idea to make the wrong people angry at you. Act cool and calm, even around people who are pompous faggots until you're sure you have a good reading of their power level. Sometimes it's obvious. If they're on their home ip they aren't worth shit and you can bully them freely. If they use panicbnc or some other free shit that's another sign they are small time. Otherwise be cautious.
>i don't know what "IRC" is or does sorry.
I have a static IP and am running OwnCloud and SSH on my server. Never got DDoSed aside from a random (literal) botnet which I've since blocked with appropriate firewall software. Back in the days when IRC servers revealed your entire IP address maybe it was possible to get hit with a hack or DDoS but nowadays the servers I'm on all hide the IP address. As for doxxing it would only be a problem if my ISP got hacked since there's no link between my IP address and my real name.
>>What's a computer?
IMAGINE BEING AT COMPUTERS
I mostly hang out on EFNet so that's the perspective I approach this from. Usually the IP to real name connection gets made via social engineering rather than any sort of hacking but I wouldn't be surprised if that happens sometimes too.
opal come back to supernets
also to trannynet
What kind of social engineering, HUH?
Calling up the ISP and convincing some dumbass tech support guy to look up the info and give it to you.
>what is gpg?
>what is ssl?
>what is sasl?
>what is FiSH?
also
>a decentralised structure where the people could sniff your messages
vs
>vs a centralised "service" that openly logs everything you do and shares it with whoever they want
Hmm...
Pretending to be antipiracy police and claiming that the IP address in question is sharing copyrighted material.
That won't work because you'll be forced to go through the courts. They usually pretend to be another tech claiming they can't get into the system in question and need the info for a legit reason.
>what is gpg?
inefficient for irc
>what is ssl?
not client-to-client encryption
>what is sasl?
not encryption at all, idiot
>what is FiSH?
it's shit
you've apparently never been on a scene irc, lol
fuck, the ignorance of kids today
Does anybody know of any prank call groups that use Discord/Mumble/whatever?
I have. Everyone uses fish. Depending on what kind of group you're in there may be more security measures but those are usually site related rather than IRC.
what?
