Getting my hourly $0.004 VPS @ vultr.

any reasons for vultr instead of don, since they're pretty much the same ?

Never used DigitalOcean before.
Just go for one. Couldn't find anything negative at vultr yet.

locally, on two IBM X3850 M2s

I use Vultr because the private network is isolated to just your account. Digital Ocean the private network is shared between multiple customers.

Besides that pretty much the same feature set as Digital Ocean. Vultr definitely has better overall performance than my $80/month AWS setup I migrated from. Only paying $20/month now.

I am still going to stick with Vultr, works just fine.

AWS free tier is the same size as the $2.50/month Vultr package, so if you don't want to pay at all you could just use AWS. This is what got me sucked into AWS in the first place though. Used their free tier and had to upgrade the instance overtime as I used more resources and all of the sudden I was stuck with a $80/month bill. $40 or so for the EC2 instance and another $40 for the bandwidth every month.

can you cancel the $2.50 tier any time ?

Most hosting is billed hourly nowadays. Should be fine.
