Just do it already. Every OS X version after 2013 is utter trash. It's still reasonably secure if you're just using it for word processing or web browsing on trusted websites with an up to date browser and basic privacy extensions. If you really want maximum comfy, grab an old PowerPC Mac and install Tiger on an SSD. It's a pretty great experience with TenFourFox and a dual boot with Debian or RHEL for serious work.

I too recall them being troublesome at first, but after some updates they worked just fine, at least for me. Granted, they could have just gone for a simple plug-it-in-and-it-appears-as-external-drive functionality instead of the proprietary driver and content managing program.

Had mine from 2005 till 2011, at which point it had to retire it due to the 'play' and 'volume up' buttons (actually probably the switches on the PCB) having worn out to the point of not working anymore. I replaced the battery on it twice during its lifespan. Housing held together with proper non-proprietary screws. On second battery change I managed to split the other upper screw pylon - fixed that with two-part epoxy. There just no way to have adventures like this with contemporary devices!

I actually dug the old warhorse up again from storage last fall to give it a try after many years. It was on its last breaths. Player booted up, hard drive spun and then clicked like it was dead and shut down, on a loop. But after a few tries it managed to boot up correct. Listened to few songs in that glorious 128kbps MP3 quality and basked in nostalgia of more careless days. After that listening session it has refused to boot up again. Goes it's gone for good now.
