The market has changed. The average user that doesn't care about quality uses their smartphone.
That's where PMPs come in. They have changed from mostly being cheap mp3 players - to mostly being expensive high quality lossless audio players.
You're not going to find them in wal mart because they have become enthusiast grade.

I'm still using my Sansa Clip+ from like ten years ago. Apparently build quality slipped on the later runs but mine is built like a tank. Still has decent battery life even.
