/IDM/ is for: >Discussion of IDM albums, songs, and artists, from well-known to unknown >Posting of IDM that you find remarkable in some way via Youtube, Soundcloud, or Bandcamp >Discovering new IDM
/IDM/ is not for: >Pointless arguments about the meaning of IDM
If you are confused about IDM, want to get into the genre, or don't know who the "big 4" are please see these artists:
>Aphex Twin >Autechre >Boards of Canada >Squarepusher
Daily reminder that there's isn't anything better than Autechre in electronica.
Kevin Powell
"Intelligent Dance Music." It sounds very pretentious, and it is to an extent.
I would define it as a kind of techno with an emphasis on percussion. It was originally supposed to be dance music that you just kinda danced to without really dancing, if that makes sense.
Jack Edwards
>with an emphasis on percussion wouldn't that make it more dancey, not less?
Dylan Fisher
No love for Plaid? New album out soon.
Jacob Gray
Wow, really? I've heard no news about that.
Oliver Ross
...Kind of.
Here's some examples where the percussion is batshit insane, not the last one so much but it fits.
Acroyear2 is kind of weird for an Ae track. Their drums are usually either fast and relatively simple or complex and measured. It's probably the closest they ever got to drill n bass. Their drums usually tend to err on the hip-hop side (like Cipater)
Carson Baker
the aphex twin isn't available in my country. the autechre one sounds nice though, thanks.
Justin Collins
His stuff has always sounded kinda generic to me, like what you'd get if you tried to make the average IDM track from the latter half of the 90s
Samuel Rivera
It's two people mate, annd The Black Dog were one of IDM's OGs
Blake Howard
is it ok to relax the icy tough IDM guy attitude to lie in bed and cry to rae all day
Adrian Edwards
I know that, for some reason I was just retarded and slipped up That statement applies to The Black Dog too, I've just never been able to get into them, even their acclaimed stuff If anything the IDM guy attitude is being a playful sperg, not icy
Yeah. It's one of their few tracks that's near impossible to deconstruct, 777 also comes to mind.
Juan Lewis
The only IDM artist from the OP is Autechre and sometimes Aphex Twin. Squarepusher is Breakcore (or "Drill n Bass") Boards of Canada are Ambient Techno
I like them, but I wouldn't call them good. So, I don't care for their new release.
Blake Cooper
What's the closest to noise song Autechre has made?
Okay, I have a question. Why is it that in most music circles it's uncool or nerdy to listen to so-called """IDM""" but stuff like Arca and releases on PAN are well regarded and hip? Maybe it's just that the name has sort of died off, but it's not really all that different...
Parker Hughes
Because 'IDM' is 'pretentious'
Zachary Baker
The name is, but the music really isn't
Like I don't listen to it to stroke my chin, I listen to it cause it's fun and nuts
Caleb Green
I'm aware, I was just saying that's the general attitude a lot of people take toward it
Joseph Adams
pan would sign autechre or aphex in a hearbeat and arca is on all the idm og shit, it's bread and butter to them
the press won't make it about the music for any of those guys always some other bullshit they glued onto it
it's all the same thing you're right, but anyone with ears knows that
