I mean sure, you can post some clyps if you want edition. Still no soundcloud though.
The threads seem really fucked lately so I just wanted to ask if there's anywhere else I could go for WIP feedback, production tips, shooting the breeze about VSTs and so on. I like that I don't have to feel self-conscious about posting a lot and I've gotten useful advice here (given, too, I hope). But the memeing back and forth about misc. shit is only gonna get worse.
Can't help you much with finding a new place for discussion. There's reddit, but I'm guessing that isn't a real option for you.
I've been trying to get into making footwork and I was wondering about DAWs. I've got the FL studio demo and Ive messed around a little but I haven't really tried to learn it. Should I upgrade for the real deal or look into reaper or Ableton? My friend has Reaper so I've gotten to use it a little, ableton is unchated territory for me though. Thoughts or suggestions?
Asher Cooper
I'm really scared to post my clypit because I really think one of you will steal it or copy my sound
Parker Campbell
Is it that good and has that been a problem here? I'm genuinely curious since I've had an idea of the sound and style I'd like to have so I wouldn't think of this.
Parker Perez
Its that good
Caleb Clark
I like FL, but if you want to do elaborate MIDI routing, ableton's way better. By that I mean, if you had a channel with some notes, and you associated it with a plug-in that takes in notes and fucks with it in some way (makes arpeggios out of them), good luck getting the arpeggio'd note pattern into some other plugin. Pain in the balls. But I do mainly sample-based hip hop stuff, so I have no problem with that. FL's solid for me.
Ian Sanchez
K. I'd like to work mostly with live instruments and generated tones, plus a little bit of sampling because it's kind of a staple of the genre. So I think I might just stick with FL. Thanks for the input.
Parker Howard
How revolutionary is it? Is it something the listener would pick up on immediately because it's so different or is it more subtle like using eastern flavored melodies?
Zachary Gomez
Its pretty complex/multilayered from the traditional instrumental you'd find on sc. No ambient/noise/hack drone
Jackson Rivera
kek; i'm sure someone is just dying to steal your genetic shit
Cameron Bailey
This kind of post only scares me more
Justin Williams
the genestealers are coming for you, user
Christian Gonzalez
How many people are in this thread right now? Do you want me to leak it?
Chase Gutierrez
yes leak it my dude
Ayden Rodriguez
>reddit Willing to give it a shot, actually. I mean, Sup Forums sucks too and summer's especially bad. My first impression is I like how much fits on a screen because ssj4narutu can't have a high-res avatar of his waifu on every post. As for the actual culture, I'm looking into specific subs. WATMM seems to be the most active, guess I'll start there. I feel really stupid for ignoring it for so long just because Sup Forums told me to.
Lincoln Ortiz
Its just a rough sketch not even a demo but please don't steal or manipulate
Listening right now, this is just a John Cage ripoff. How long is it?
Jordan Cook
>he thinks this is "great"
meh it's ok
William Bennett
I don't think its great its just an unfinished bastard project I am currently working on but this is also my first time sharing a clypit and my anxiety is telling I shouldn't have done it
Blake Myers
>he listens to his anxiety
top lel
beta af
Ryan Hughes
>he doesn't have mild schiz ever since he moved to another foreign first world country
Hudson Fisher
Wait, you're , right? Intro sounds DG af, the brass sample is cool too. I like it. Does get a bit samey, though. I feel like slicing the sample up at times and/or adding some wild automation would help.
Jonathan Diaz
just sleep it off bro :) x^]
Mason James
no I'm not samefagging and idk who johnny cage is besides mortal kombat I'm sorry if you think it sounds derivative I'm so fucking sorry
Carson Parker
Its also supposed to be a hiphop beat so I intend it to be raped over
Matthew Butler
>i intend it to be raped over
so you really ARE a death grips rip off :^)
Anthony Rodriguez
:*****( i wasn't thinking about dg at all when I was making this
Ryan Smith
I just primarily make hip hop instrumentals plz no more tsundere
Joseph Kelly
Don't tell me I need to explain a 4'33 joke. I replied to a post that didn't contain music any music.
The hip-hop clyp does remind me of DG, but happy brass instead of crazy hobo is a big enough distinction and I'm probably just biased towards DG comparisons anyway. It's cool. In fact, I'll probably get rich when I repost it on SC.
I've been trying my hand at dub techno for a while but my atmospheres always come out kind of plastic-y and thin. How can I work towards getting lush, thick atmospheres while avoiding "mud"? Also, volume issues?
Asher Rogers
try learning about music production
Joshua Peterson
Mort Garson's Plantasia. Any other answer is wrong.
I would choose a playlist based on the style of the evening and then include some of my own tracks in there that fit the genre.
Eli Morgan
Cool idea, i'm a music producer myself, working on Logic. Ask me anything if you need and i'll try to answer in the best way.
Cameron Kelly
SQ8L is so fucking great
Leo Anderson
Seriously r/makinghiphop and r/lofihiphop are places where people actually talk about music production. These threads dont do shit for anyone. Those subreddits do. Plus there's r/drumkits and r/vintageobscura for finding dope samples.
Robert Baker
>nig nog "music" ""production""
heh
Jace Cox
I don't give a shit about hip-hop production. What is a filthy redditor doing on 4han anyways?
Colton Martin
>wahhhh these threads are le terrible >you should come to my le subreddits Nobody is forcing you to come here.
Caleb Cook
Grime MC Novelist AKA Top Shop Man AKA Dan AKA Bossman has created a new genre, "Ruff Sound".
Just a joke, one of my bandmates always brings up plantasia, and how "it's totally made for plants but it's still good music"
Chase Gomez
Dude. More reverb/delay. I don't even know how you could ever have thought there's enough desu. I especially recommend NastyDLA. But also, you could add some white noise or tape noise or something. Vinyl crackle and field recs are maybe even better since you can add space on them too. I think you could go with a lot more high end, anyway. And I also find that adding a bit of noise into the synth before the filter makes it tons more lush. And really, maybe you could use another sound in there. Not sure though. As for volume and mud...your track's too far from having these issues to really comment on them. Just keep the gain, wet/dry and feedback knobs under control? Then EQ out the mud? I dunno. And I think the kick is too strong, but maybe it's just me. I'm not at all an expert on dub techno, I've just been trying to get more lush sounds and these are some of my ideas. Very interested in any others. I didn't even notice I had it playing, but I enjoyed it somehow. Tried again, actually paying attention this time and it's still nice. The quiet part and the ending are especially lovely.
Andrew Hughes
I think the drums are kinda thin and feel a bit tacked on. I also can't even tell if there's a bass in there, but w/e, sounds cool to me. Not sure what to make of the resonant synth. I'd like to say it's pretty interesting so far and you could even use more synths, but then I can't really think of a metal band with EDM-ish synths that doesn't blow. Use it responsibly, I guess. I hate the UI, though. Looks nice, but damn the menus are unnecessary.
Dominic Foster
Thanks. I'm always having these issues when I try to design more minimal atmospheres. Also, that track is peaking @ ~-2dB, so I'm not sure how many more elements I can add before things get messy. Also, there's no synths here except for the sub. Just piano chord samples. I'll try turning the kick down and giving that delay plugin a try though (currently using TAL-Dub-2).
Julian Wood
reddit is cancer for production, user. most of them circlejerk the same retarded shit over and over again. there are a few people that actually know what they're doing but I don't see them that often on any of those subs. glhf
Kevin Ward
Does anyone have an idea how to get a similar vocal sound to Sufjan Steven's? Especially the one on C&L? I know that the vocals are double-tracked. They sounds kinda lofi-ish but they don't seem to be EQed that much really. I'm terribly confused at the moment.
William White
Definitely get EpicVerb by VoS. It's a free reverb and sounds absolutely amazing, even if you're just working with the presets.
Luke Nelson
sounds like he whispered that shit into the mic. that's mostly what gets the sound i suppose.
Brandon Edwards
Oh yeah, I've been using that one for a while since I gave up on the stock FL plugins. It's nice, but I doubt I'm using it to its full potential.
Benjamin Gonzalez
Ok, that's good. You should also try to get at least a bit more high-end in there, like, for example, a (sampled) guitar with loads of delay (a single-hit muted chord will give you that nice dub-y sound). And there isn't enough going on in the mix, in my opinion. Try to get some kind of basis going (ostinato) which provides a solid foundation for you to built your athmospheres on. The track seems a little stale/dull right now.
Bentley Reyes
Huh, I expected something like that. His vocals sound super intimate. But for that to work he'd have to move really close to the mic, wouldn't he? Even with a pop filter, don't you get loads of noise when you're that close?
Carter White
Whoa, you sure about that sub? Legit didn't hear it on my speakers. Granted, I don't have a subwoofer so maybe I shouldn't be talking, but my setup doesn't usually ruin dub techno. That and the kick must absolutely murder your headroom. Work on those two to make room for more cool stuff happening on top. Or maybe disregard me because I'm clueless about subs, idk. I actually loved 0:28-0:43. Intro's alright too, but hen tthe snare is just eh imo (both sound and pattern). Really though, what's that noise? Sounds like a vocal at one point, but I'm not sure what you're doing to it.
Colton Scott
Gimmie some feedback here, just making a comfy beat that sounds good. clyp.it/vlksfusc
Dominic Sullivan
The first problem I see is the drums. They just sound lifeless. I'm thinking about just scrapping them completely and starting with some new ones.
Ayden Lewis
Yeah the sound design sounds really great but the drums are not quite as good as they could be. Everything sounds so full without the drums that they don't have enough space once they come in. I'd try to carve out some spaces for them, eq wise.
Hey frog man here, Thanks for the feedback, that sounds like a good idea.
Christian Myers
i know ableton doesnt let you use multiple audio devices at once but would it let you use the midi in/out from 2 audio interfaces at once if only one of them was being used for audio?
You'd be surprised. I heard a certain song stealing melanin enriched man lurks here
Gavin Jenkins
it's fairly narrow. you seem to have tried to counter it by panning some of the drums which is a good move, but the bulk of the non-drum samples sound like they're completely mono or smth.
if the source samples are not mono, bring some of the width back, else look into a stereo expander or just create the stereo manually.
Levi Hall
what are the best prod subreddits?
William Gonzalez
I have an old Yamaha SW1000XG card and even though I don't use the audio outputs I can still use the MIDI ports alongside my other MIDI I/O devices - with MIDI drivers being separate from audio drivers (even if bundled within a single installer) I don't see Ableton having any trouble treating the two functions separately.
i know its really repetitive and not really creative but its still a work in progress. Was just practicing programming drums and came up with this little loop. Plan on mixing it properly soon but i would like some feedback.
Michael Bailey
Lyrics? Vocal range?
Juan Perry
If people were so good at copying music, we'd be hearing a lot more successful clones of other artists
Xavier Hughes
Just copped an octatrack. Is it legit or did I fall for a hipster meme?
Landon Peterson
>clyp.it/lny04k5b Kick and Snare are solid, the hats get repetitive, i would try and vary them throughout. I would maybe eq the main stabs because they sound like they're interfering with the other sounds. But not bad overall, 7/10
Levi Adams
Chill as funk/10 Kind of reminds me of Nightmares on Wax (particularly Mind Elevation). I dig it
Ayden Mitchell
Hipster meme. Better box it up and send it to me so I can properly recycle it.
Robert Barnes
a lot of money for a sampler. it's fine if you're using it to gig and need the stability but i'd have a hard time justifying the cost if it's just going to sit in a studio where you do everything it does in software without much trouble.
Charles Evans
Hey thanks, by vary them do you mean add new hat sounds or just vary the pattern?
Sometimes I wonder if I should change up my drum sounds midway thru a track to keep it more interesting...
David Lopez
Or he could like the workflow and versatility it offers
It would have made you sound less douche to say "it's not for me"
Gabriel Fisher
just email me senpai I thought about that, but by the time I actually bought ableton and a more advanced audio interface I figured the price would be similar.
Dominic Parker
>clyp.it/vlksfusc I would say both, pattern and sound. Let a sound drop, then bring in a new one, solo just one sound, etc///
