Why do people use Linux?

It seems like it just makes everyone's lives harder.

It's the kernel of choice for a GNU operating system.

Nah.
The advanced filesystems make data recovery in the event of bad sectors a breeze.

90% of computers that 'die' just have a bad hard drive and begin shredding files.
Put a BTRFS mirror in your laptop and you're set for the next two decades on a single machine.

Meanwhile the windows user is trying to figure out why his pictures are getting scrambled and his start menu isn't opening.

It's just an all around more secure and customizable operating system.

Your kidding right?

My grandparents would get a virus a day from clicking on ad's and going to sketchy porn sites.

Since i put Ubuntu on their system its been golden.

archfags aren't "everyone". there are linux distros are easier than windows. you posted one of them

It's only hard under a certain IQ level.

Well I mean
Your not wrong!

I like understanding how things work and Linux has helped me grow my knowledge in a lot of areas like scripting and programming.

It also looks neat af when riced and I like tiling windows and doing most things from my keyboard instead of a gui.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

it has a high learning curve but is meant for power users.
why can helicopters be better than cars if their so much harder to operate?
well, if you only want to go get groceries, or you lack the mental capacity to operate a helicopter, stick with a car.
but if you take the time to learn how to fly a helicopter you can go anywhere and look like a g when you go get groceries

How would you know? Systemd is unaudited mess

this

Only Sup Forums uses it as a main OS. Linux is intended to be used for specialty, one shot operations, such as using Linux to run your webserver, and ONLY these one shot operations. You shouldn't be using Linux like you are using your PC or phone

i do every day and i have been for about 5 years now and every time i have touch windows since then i am dumbfounded by the lack of features and extensibility

Yeah because you fell for a meme

I use linux to piss retards and get attention from morons like you.
Wanna zucc my coc? :^)

no, because im not so dumb i cant figure out how to use it properly

>It seems like it just makes everyone's lives harder.
I'm using GNU/Linux since 14 years now... What makes your life harder is Windows and macOS, Windows especially...

Ubuntu pretty much just works so I don't know what you're talking about.

pretty much this

Some people value different things to you, and for them, linux ticks more of the boxes.

You must be pissed off by the idiots who keep pushing linux on everyone. Those idiots are a downside of linux. And also the idiots who seem to think that linux should change to cater for them or for the people they're trying to push linux on.

I also think redhat should back off and stop trying to make linux retard-friendly. Or at least do what ElementaryOS is doing and keep to their own sandpit.

To be fair, if it had a better web browser and nicer coding style, I would totally be using Plan9 instead of this crap.

That being said, "better web browser" is never going to happen at this rate. The web these days is filled with javascript based garbage and the standards are so massive and have so many vendor-specific-extensions that if you want to write a performant and feature complete web browser, you would need a whole team of people working on it. Simplicity in that department flew out of the window years ago.

Linux is not perfect, but it's at least closer to what I want than wangblows or OSX. Plan9 is overall better except for how it deals with graphics (which could be fixed) and the lack of good web browsers (which can't be fixed and is the fault of the web being shit).

>more secure
Wrong, even Thorvalds agrees Linux is complete shit when it comes to security because his goal has always been performance and not security. Stop with this stupid meme because a locked down Windows machine is just as secure, if not more secure, than a Linux machine with best security settings.

solution -> don't use memed

In a vacuum, perhaps. But linux simply isn't a target of real world threats most of the time.

no
you cannot run windows stateless without some sort of expensive software add on.
i run a stateless linux and even if i were to get some sort of virus it only persists until a reboot
what do the intelligence agencies use to keep their information secure?
RHEL.

Can windows do THIS?

They can't afford the clearly superior macOS version 10.13 High Sierra with Touch Bar and Retina Display.

>Why do people use Linux?
Because it is a good kernel. Android is the most popular distribution.
GNU - just wannabe shit.

>what do the intelligence agencies use to keep their information secure?
RHEL, Windows 10 Secure Baseline 3, and Windows Server 2016.

>RHEL, Windows 10 Secure Baseline 3, and Windows Server 2016.
dont forget that they modify all of these to remove their own malware

oh man lemme get into this cool programming shit on linux, sudo apt install gcc, gcc main.c -o main

oh man lemme get into this cool programming shit on winblows, huh nothing already pre-installed, shit i guess ill download a compiler on winblows internet explorer, hmm mingw seems good, gotta wait for this 5-10 minute installer to finish, oh great its done, lets use it from the command line now, oh hold up i have to set the mingw path environment variable by going through about 10 menus, oh this is so much easier!

Yeah that's why they start with Windows 10 Secure Baseline 3, it has all the STIGs applied.
iase.disa.mil/stigs/Pages/index.aspx

I think the important thing here is that all of these machines rarely connect to public internet, and they encrypt with KG-175s when they have to use leased lines or even go SCIF to SCIF.

No, they don't, otherwise it would be difficult for CIA-boss-nigga to controll CIA-niggers.

lurk this board more

The only acceptable answer in this thread. Linux is a learning opportunity above all else.

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.
Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.
One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?
(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.

>his start menu isn't opening
this is the kind of shit you get on linux, not windows

Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.
You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.
Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?

Ah the same argument apple used for their Macs
>virus proof!
Until they get market share.

lack of attacks doesnt mean more secure

i hope the year of the linux desktop never comes

>have to install something linux
>complains it's not preinstalled on windows

maybe not, but it does directly correlate to being less likely to become infected, which functionally is the same thing as being more secure.
linux is still more secure than windows tho.

>the program doesnt actually execute any quicker, it just finishes earlier because the code is more efficient
you are arguing semantics now

Tell that to the science crowd. Biolinux and other linux derivates are dominating the field with macOS being in a respectable second place.

Linux is the most used operating system in the world.
Something like 90% of all web servers are Linux, Android is a variant of Linux, and most, if not all, routers and modems run linux. Linux is found running on most of the digital technology in the world.

In those applications Linux is not running a GUI or it is operated by some form of web control page.

Linux was never meant to have a GUI. Those distributions that offer Linux as a desktop environment aree far more unstable than any commandline linux. As a desktop operating system windows is far superior as it was specifically designed as a graphical interface operating system. Once windows stopped relying on DOS and adopted NT as its underlying layer then windows became far more stable.

Linux distributions with a GUI desktop are like a ship that has been converted into a submarine. They do not work well and it is better to have a submarine that was built as a submarine

It honestly depends on your needs. Most people use a PC for browsing and music/video, and those people are honestly pretty fucking stupid to pay for Windows instead of using some newbie distro.

That's a big conk

>some guy in india keeps calling me saying my windows pc is malfunctioning
>for any menial task i either have to pay for software or install spyware even though this task is performed using iso standards
>I browsed a website and now my computer is infected with walware
>My OS minimum install requires 25gb of space and 2gb of ram
>My OS updates take anywhere from 1 to 8 hours to perform
>I have a shit operating system unless if i pay a premium for a non-shit operating system
this is the kind of shit you get with windows, not linux

Pardon me for one moment. What you are calling Linux, is in actuality, GNU/Linux, or as I have nicknamed it, GNU plus Linux. Linux isn't an operating system by itself, but it is just another part of the GNU system, which has been extended in functionality via various GNU components (including GNU's shell utilities and corelibs) which only then fit the definition of a complete operating system as outlined by POSIX.

There are many people today who are running the GNU operating system without even being aware of it. Through a strange turn of events, a misnomer has emerged where people refer to a widely used version of the GNU system as "Linux", unaware that the proper name for the system they run is the GNU operating system.

Now while they are in fact using Linux, it is only one component of the system that they run. Linux is used as the kernel: the part of an operating system which distributes a machine's resources to other programs which request them. While this functionality is essential for the successful functioning of a system, it cannot function on its own, it needs an operating system within which it can carry out its functions. Linux is commonly paired with the GNU operating system: the entirety of the system is GNU with the addition of Linux, or GNU/Linux. Every single "Linux Distribution" is actually a distribution of GNU/Linux.

my win7 installation getting irreparable broken was the last push for me. i couldn't even make a new install without formatting my hdd like you could in xp, so i swooped a linux mint iso, backed my files and installed mint alongside with win7. after a few months it turns out i barely boot into win7 anymore because there really isn't a reason for me. i'm not an AAA gamer and the few games i play conveniently also have a native linux port. the programs i used on win also have a decent linux alternative. the only small downside for me is no winamp, because there really isn't something which comes close to the bento experience in comfiness but i can deal with that.

I use latex alot and I was surprised how much smoother it is on linux. Even long documents compile in the blnk of an eye.

You're probably using it on your phone right now tho.

It's good for software developers

I use asswiping. I am surprised how much smoother asswiping is with Bidet than toilet paper.

Ackhually yes. Check out bbzero. It replaces windows explorer shell and acts something like -box type wm of linux.

Why i use Linux on my laptop:
1. Bash
2. Package management (not downloading random exes from the internet)
3. Privacy, the OS doesn't spy on me.
4. Automation; using ansible i automate post install configuration

Ackhually yes. Check out bbzero. It replaces windows explorer shell and acts something like -box type wm of linux.

I don't understand this. Why is Ayano hiding a piece of corn under her shirt? Does she not want to share with Kyouko/Chitose/whoever?

More like
>His start menu isn't opening
>Try to troubleshoot
>Uses google for .0005 seconds
>Find post with similar problem from 2004 with no fix
or
>Find posts with convoluted answers that don't work and have 0 explanation as to how they work

wtf are you talking about literally the entire atmosphere of configuration management, devOPS and cloud computing are all largely based in linux variants.

The most installed OS on the planet.

It's valuable to learn, and not easy if you're not using it every day.

>sswiping. I am surprised h

Any good recommendations for a non programmer getting started with ansible resources etc.?

Android is based off Linux there fore I like Linux and all of its properties

I have no choice.

good job OP. You made this exact threads like 10 times now and it gets at least 200 replies every single time. Well done.

Its not complete and uncomfortable piece of shit like Windows. And it also respect you.

They want to know enough to pass a job interview for a shop that uses it for whatever. A lot of big iron shops and banks in NYC use it despite hating the shit out of it and other unix variants.

Majority of Sup Forums is using windows 10. the rest are phone posters and dualbooters

non phonefag, winfag or dualboot fag here.
qubesOS is the master computing race

I've very rarely had such a simple problem not have an immediate and simple answer, also checking who got them

Bump

I didn't start appreciating Linux until I hit age 40.

I use both Windows 10, Ubuntu and Kali. Does this make you angry

that's her thick 8 inch dick

I just switched because I realized I don't actually use computers in a too advanced manner. I browse the web, make some programs (python usually), and occasionally play games. What does windows do that's any better?

i literally only ever use linux when i'm browsing shady af deepweb sites

>t. plebeian

>ubuntu
>windows 10
>kali

i use QubesOS with Xen and can run fedora, kali, debian, windows10, android and alpine all without the need to ever reboot, low overhead and seamless interfaces all on my 2015 laptop.
plebs who dont use cloud-based OS's btfo.

bump

Windows 10 Cortana is slow and buggy, and can at times make it so the start menu doesn't open properly.

>dualbooters
>implying anyone who plays desktop vidya doesn't have Windows in some form
>implying anyone on Sup Forums hasn't played vidya on their computer at some point

1) I philosophically agree with it. This was the first reason, but arguably the least important. I mean, I'm not hardcore or anything and I'll use whatever third-party works.

2) It's free and I don't have to dick around with licenses. I can scrap together whatever parts and get linux running on it rather than scrounging for windows licenses. Re-installing the OS isn't a terrifying ordeal because I can just try again with... whatever. This was a bigger deal back before recovery disks and shit, but it's still a minor issue. At one point I was legitimatly thinking of buying a windows OS to get some games up and running on a box I built.... HOLY FUCK that's expensive. So far I'm STILL running my gaming PC on a license I got from school.... a decade ago?

3) apt-get install. It's the "app store", "apple store", "steam store", where everything is free, instantly installs and runs and it's existed before any of the others were even dreamed about. Seriously, this is hella better at "it just runs than the fucking tango of installations and dependencies and licensing and hoops you have to jump through for MS products. Maybe Apple is better though, I dunno.

4) mdadm. I've got a raid array partition that lets me transfer all my content between OS's. I guess windows could do something similar with an external drive. But my father got FUCKED by some proprietary external raid array.

5) More secure. Less bugs.

6) Since Ubuntu, your life really isn't any harder. The exception would be that Pulse Audio clusterfuck (FUCK YOU POTTERING), but other than that everything has been plug and play.

7) Win10 is waltzing towards your OS as a subscription service where you pay every year. Fuck that noise. And Apple products have ALWAYS bent the customer over a barrel and under delivered, albeit with rounded corners.

8) Microsoft is a legitimately evil company. Supporting the SCO lawsuit, Embrace Extend Extinguish, their bullshit treadmill of useless gobshit that gets dropped like silverlight, or WORSE, the useless shit they DON'T drop like.....uuuuuggghhh.... Sharepoint. That fucking piece of shit is FANTASTIC at what it does. But it's main function is to funnel money into microsoft's partners.

It is the only operating system that can run on my 9 year old laptop without any issues.
Also it is a perfect environment for software and web development on my PC, where I have Windows and Ubuntu installed. The only alternative is buying a Mac, but I could just buy a better PC with the same price anyway.

I'll put it to you this way, OP:
MacOS is the lover/spouse that only jerks you off when you tell them that you want sex (and wears gloves while doing so).
Windows will let you fuck their mouth, but you'll have to pay in some way or another to keep getting blown in the future.
Linux is the housekeeper that's ready to "serve their master" until they die.

It depends on the distro. I use ubuntu on my laptop and pretty much just use it to torrent and shitpost and it does that great. At the end of the day a computer is a tool. Just use the right tool for the job

MacOS is a ripoff of BSD, silly macfag.

>but you'll have to pay in some way or another
like getting an STD virus

NO! AYANO IS NOT A TRAP!

csgo works on linux so i don't give a shit.

Replace pseudogirl with real girl and will be perfect.

I have both windows and linux.
windows on my gaming pc used for gaming.

And linux mint on laptop for other purposes.

Because it makes them feel cool, different to stupid “normies”. Makes them feel like a programmer haxxor without knowing a single line of code. And they are willing to waste huge amounts of time for that.

Cos it's not windows

>no Linux version of Office
Until that happens, I cannot use Linux as a main OS

Because it makes our lives easier.
I have been using Linux for about 12 years now and while at first it was pure curiosity, I just wouldn't downgrade to windows at this point.
But I also use it on my grandma's computer because I don't have to support her anymore.
Something as simple as going online was a hard time for her with windows.
Her bank uses a java application to authenticate the login and going through the update steps of java over the phone is a nightmare. Telling her to click on the update button and type a password is much easier. She have used Linux for about three years now and everything is great
