Buy my mixtapes (check out my youtube vids)

Sorry, had to get my shitpost out of the way early. Any song suggestions to maybe learn?

/gg/

If you knew then what you know now would you still have gotten into guitar?

Or would you have chosen something else?

Yes to the first question.

Please, give your age with your responses.

Please be honest, it will add clarity to the discussion.

I can't imagine myself playing bass, drums or piano for various reasons so yes to question 1.

I tried learning the violin but I ended up selling my violin for guitar stuff.

Wind/brass instruments are for dorks unless you're a cute anime girl.

I am a 22 year old male.

Yeah probaly. Wish I would have stuck with piano though.

I'm 20

Oh, ok. Well, I'm 19. Not planning on going anywhere with music, but I love it and enjoy it as a hobby.

19 and started playing at 11.
I definitely would. Guitar is just so much fun.
I've been playing piano long before then but it's not as enjoyable to me. Also started violin later but it's way harder and again, not as fun.

24, started playing at 10. I probably would have. I would have practiced more and done jazz band in high school though.

It's the only thing that lets me channel my emotions. I don't h ave any friends or family to talk to, so this is all I've got.

Age?

28.

It's been a long time this way, you get used to it. It's not so bad really.

absolutely. guitar and piano are the two instruments which i would have (and will) devote my time to

20, started playing at 9

24

Decided between guitar and piano. I still prefer guitar

25, started around 17. I only regret that I didn't start earlier, but I'm working on catching up.

Trumpet and drums are tempting, but guitar has still the most versatility. I mean, you can play it anywhere you want, and the emergence of electric guitars gave us such a wide range of designs and looks to choose from, unlike any other instrument. But maybe I'll give drums a try one day.

I played piano for a good 9 years, then I moved on to guitar. Have been playing for 5 years now.

I think the piano is definitely more versatile note wise, but the guitar is better in terms of genre. You hear it in almost everything.

I used to hate guitar with a passion, because I settled with it since I couldn't learn the violin. I was a huge classical fan back in the days.

I vote rickenbro for best namefag
That other guy's fine I guess.
And CrazyYaga for get off my Easter Island tent making image board tier

>tfw no 5150 and a Mesa cab

Yes. I'm 26 and started when I was 15.
It's an inexpensive hobby compared to others, it's fun, it's a stress relief, it's really fucking fun, and making/playing music is just amazing.

>tfw I don't know that feel

Well at least I put my noise gate before my boost like any other sane person would

I put the Tubescreamer in the loop of the NS-2 when it's actually hooked up. For whatever reason, putting it after the noise gate still had a lot of feedback issues

New bass day? New bass day!

turpsy q sup mayne
loved that song you posted recently on soundcloud

How do I stop being a faggot and obsess over the dent on my guitar, and just play the damn thing?

self explanatory

But it's a pricey guitar user..

doesn't matter, it's meant to be played. it's going to gather scars. it's not a painting or a sculpture. unless you want to sell it later in which case yeah it's a problem.

6 months in guitar and I already was thinking "why didn't I pick this up earlier"
The only thing I'd change is buying a decent guitar instead of having to suffer my shitplank.

I think the shit like that just shows its yours and that you love it. If your guitar was mass produced, now its unique. If not, its just a reminder of your experience with it and shows you use it.

Age?

I'd have kept with it
I played guitar for what must have been 4 or so years when I was younger then stopped when my new teacher decided I had to do everything from absolute 0 focusing on only finger picking. Being young I was bored shitless and stopped.
Fastforward a few years to my brother's Jazz band performance, I'm about 12 or so and not really feeling the music so being a teenager I decide to look at the ladies on stage, decide the drummer is the most attractive. My parent's notice and ask if I was interested in the drums, tell them I was to avoid having to say i was just perving. I start playing drums later that year and over time get really into it, and now having gone to uni I can't have any drums so I bought a guitar again.

The writing on the pickups would annoy me personally

I'm 24 and I started only a year ago. I just regret not having gotten into it before, but I guess I was busy doing other stuff in life.

It's kind of frustrating to see people who began playing when they were like 10 and now they are my age and they have achieved nothing. It makes me wonder if I will ever manage to do anything relevant. I'm not turning back on my daily 4 hours of playing anyway, that's for sure.

>daily 4 hours

I hope you're practicing smart, user.

with 4 hours a day you could be a fucking virtuoso within a year if you work the right way

What subjects should be covered during those 4 hours

> tw I need to find a way to justify buying this $250-300 pedal

Fox Pedals The Wave, Delay/Reverb

I would have picked up bass still

I probably would have started taking lessons sooner, and depending on certain things, possibly would have chosen that as a major instrument instead of saxophone. I'm 20.

I try my best to make those 4 hours count, but wherever I look everyone gives me a different practising schedule. What type of exercises would you find useful for a daily basis? I appreciate any advice.

How do you normally remove a fret from a unbinded fretboard?

I have this Ibanez guitar, and they actually hidden the fret tang, not sure how they did it, and how I can remove it.

Not who you replied to, but

Get scales and arpeggios perfect and then start speeding them up gradually, and once you've got them to a point where you can just play them without thinking really quickly, move on to another type of scale/arpeggio. Continue to play the old scales/arpeggios as part of your warmup though. This'll give you good options for improv later

Etudes should be exercises that make you better at your repertoire while also being able to stand on their own as music, so look for stuff that does something harmonically that you aren't terribly used to, or that deals with difficult picking techniques, and polish those until you're satisfied that you've learned something from them

With repertoire, learn stuff that you like that isn't too hard. Instead of starting fast and playing sloppily and trying to clean it up, start slow and perfect, then speed it up. You'll have a way better time cleaning everything this way because it'll have started clean, so you won't have to unlearn stuff

Source: completed 3 years of a music degree

why does everything sound so much better with reverb?

You can/will improve faster than them due to your dedication and hopefully passion. Just make sure you keep moving forward and dont stagnate.

I meant *how* you practice rather than specifics about your routine.

Practice should be focused on improving specific aspects of your playing rather than mindless repetition.

eg. if you wanted to learn a scale, lick, riff etc., learn it slowly and concentrate on accuracy (rhythmic and technical) - even at 1/4 speed or less make sure it's right and you are not playing with bad habits. Don't just blast through stuff an hope it will get better.

You'll progress much quicker by going slowly rather than trying to go fast too soon - the bad habits and mistakes are far harder to practice out than learning it right in the first place.

I don't know what sort of music you play, so it's hard to recommend a specific routine.

It hides your mistakes

Still don't know what to do about this

cum in the holes

put mayonayse in the holes and eat fries with it

...

Took a picture of it in sunlight so you can see the colour properly, you can't even see that writing in most cases. Bartolini and Delano do the same on their soapbar pickups though, it's pretty normal.

GAS

THE JEWS XD

I think I'm on the right path then, I always warm up with scales and some picking exercises to slowly develop speed on them. I also have some licks that help me train certain aspects as in stretching, jumping from string to string, etc.

I guess one of the positive things of reaching maturity is that I can finally get my life on the proper tracks and sensibly focus all my dedication on whatever activities I choose

I like to believe I'm having patience enough when it comes to learning. I'd love to fire up a sexy solo out of nowhere but this takes time, and I'm enjoying the process anyway.

As for what I play, I can't play much out of blues/rock with my current level. I'm aiming for jazz, but I've checked some jazz guitar exercises and they sure seem hard, I guess they could delay my learning as I'm still not ready for them?

Thank you all for your helpful input.

Can I plug it with dowel and redrill it?

They look even better naked, user!

not sure. i think piano is a 'better' instrument than a guitar, but my fingers aren't big enough for piano

i don't like instruments that require breath to play, so woodwinds and horns are out.

i've always had a fascination with violin and cello, if i had to do it all over again i think i'd pick a violin and fuck around with the guitar on the side. i actually wanted to play violin as a kid when they gave us a choice for instruments to play in the school band, but my teacher said all the violin spots were taken. i got stuck with trumpet instead

>would you still have gotten into guitar
I don't and I would never play guitar, I just wish I had started with upright bass when I was way younger, instead of playing bass now and just starting to learn upright.

I figured I would see you here again. I've been staring at THD porn all day. I have the Jet City Picovalve for my home rig which is nice, but I'm craving a Flexi pretty badly. I'd trade my modded Bassman 100 head for one, but I don't think they are nearly the same value.

Fair enough. No where as near bad as the Fender Noiseless ones

Going to join a Jazz course next August. Originally was going to join with a guitar (ibanez af55, really solid), but made the smart decision to go with a bass, got a Cort, which is not that bad, planning on replacing when i get the chance.

Don't know anything about it but it looks badass and thats the most important thing.

Most effects do

>Source: completed 3 years of a music degree

How was it? Was it worth it? I ask because I am considering doing it myself.

Damn. How have I not seen this before

stfu we already helped you read the archive

I'm still doing it - I've got another year to go

Its fun but it is a lot of work. Schedule times where you can practice, and stick to it. If you start a music degree, you'll probably become kind of disenfranchised with it at some point, but don't let a lack of motivation stop you from continuing to work

If I wasn't doing a music degree, I still wouldn't know what I want to do with my life and I'd just be in some kind of limbo of "why did i go to college" but knowing what I know, it was the right choice for me.

Is the zoom g1Xon any good? It seems like a nice way to swap between completely different sounds mid song on one pedal. I'm also a beginner, so the ability to try out pretty much all the normal effexts appeals to me.

Well it's delay + reverb so just pretend it's two 125 dollar pedals

Oh yeah forgot to note the lack of dials is a major con for me. Any good multifx alternatives?

Hey, guys. I play bass for about two years, but I was just wasting time and messing around fretboard mostly and now I'm gonna take it more seriously.
Can you give my some advice, how I should practice? Except using tabs of songs, cuz I feel like it'll lead me nowhere.
I don't want to play superfast or something. Just want to be a good rock bassist.

>6505+

lmao

The only problem with it is that it sounds its best when cranked.
The master volume does a pretty good job getting a good sound at reasonable volumes, but it really comes alive with the MV bypassed

practicing with a bow will really help your intonation

Yeah I kind of feel the same way. I want to at least try and do something I love rather then going into the every-day workforce and being miserable for the rest of my life. At least give my dreams a good shot, instead of living the nightmare.

If you could share anymore tips on how to be successful going in to the program it would be much appreciated. I am an intermediate player and know a good chunk of theory. But at the end of the day I don't feel like I am where I should be going into a college music course.

>bad as the Fender Noiseless ones
I don't even notice it.

Im in love

I wasn't where I needed to be going into college either. Just make sure you work really hard. All of the best players at whatever instrument got there because they invested countless hours into their instrument. Knowing theory even a little bit is pretty good to start, but you'll get whipped into shape pretty quickly if you do decide to study music

Learn music theory, Hal Leonard: Bass Method is the best method book out there but it starts at the very beginning for new players.

I know, I play arco quite frequently. I just wish I would have started with upright because the transition to bass would have been so much easier than the other way around.

I'm just nervous because I have little to no experience playing with other people. I did an audition and got accepted but improving/chomping in jazz with other people scares the shit out of me.

>try an american special strat
>noticeable fret ends, worst than the MIM strat besides it
>try an MIM roadworn strat
>can feel the fucking walnut stripe having a gap between it and the maple neck

It's just bad ones of the bunch right

>chomping

well, there's you're problem!

Tell your teacher

They'll help you learn the skills you need in order to do that - That's why they're there

you either live in an arid shithole like Arizona or a dry winter shithole like Chicago

Quality control at Fender isn't that great, they're still mass produced products and not labours of love. That's why I stick to small luthiers/shops that actually take care of each individual piece.

Good point. Anyways, thanks for the advice and best of luck in your course!

Maybe their not as bad as they look in the shop then. I probably wouldn't at an angle.

I don't think it's a huge deal in general, "I don't like how the pickups look" is pretty far down my personal priority list.

>their

Ah shit

>tfw no one to compliment you on your guitar playing skills

Okay, so i bought a yamaha fg700s like two months ago as my first guitar. I need new strings however, so what does Sup Forums recommend I buy? I like a warmer sounding guitar.

Just get standard Daddario strings, nickel wound with a steelcore usually. They work for everything and they're cheap.

...

Where do I get hemp strings?

I was going to get elixirs. Why Daddario? And when I go to Guitar Center, do I just say I need Daddario strings? Or elixir? or what?

Sucks for you, I've overheard my parents call me Van Halen when they're talking to other people.
I actually play Djent ;__;
>tfw you can regularly impress normies with your impressive shred

I mean he's playing fast as hell, he must be good right?
