>At its peak, Yik Yak was valued at $400 million.
Why didn't anyone repackage the idea after Yak went under? Seems like an obvious cash cow

theverge.com
twitter.com
They probably did, it's just that no one uses them for the same reason that everyone stopped using yikyak
It would be popular but good luck monetizing an anonymous gossip app.
Yik Yak was a local Sup Forums but became a local Twitter because they needed to find a revenue stream and anonymous platforms can't make money. That killed them instead.
Who?
people graduate and don't stay in college forever?
Ads
I miss trolling on Yak. I loved spouting the most racist shit I could and gathering (you)'s
because yik yak stopped being anonymous and required accounts and then started doing all sorts of other shit
Literary WHO?
it would be a really fucking stupid place to buy advertising:
>anonymity means you have no idea who you're advertising to
>at best you could advertise geographically
literally worse than a billboard
>at best you could advertise geographically
Isn't that really really useful? It's more geographically accurate than IP is ever gonna get you.
>Isn't that really really useful?
yeah, but there are a MILLION other ways to advertise geogrpahically which you can at least justify based off of usage numbers/ info about the people you're advertising to. Yik-Yak tried to monetise their platform, but to do so they had to get rid of the anonymity and it their user base BTFO'd. Anyone trying to emulate them would run into the same problem. And that's before you get into the issue that it was pretty much just a fad anyways. Personally, I only ever used it while pooping, and that was only until I found a game I kinda liked. You can't make money advertising to shitters and shitlords (like )
Also, a company's valuation is a terrible measure of its viability as a business
What's that? That logo is cute af
Jodel is kinda big in nordics at the moment.
>anonymous platforms can't make money.
he said, on a profitable anonymous imageboard
More like local reddit, with it's downvote bullshit
Universities can no longer handle something like YikYak, imagine the level of macroaggressions when people can honestly say what they think to the local population around them?
Students are not prepared. The universities would scream to ban it, even go as far as to lobby the government.
>Sup Forums
>profitable
Anonymous forums are good but also moneypits. You basically need either a charitable person or the government to run them.
one kid literally got expelled because of something he said on yik yak
>install yikyak years ago
>starts as normie /r9k/ then moves to 12 year old-tier gossip
Because the tone became too vicious for advertisers to feel comfortable buying ads on Yik Yak, and the attempt to tone down the viciousness resulted in users leaving the app in droves since the only thing Yik Yak was good for was the vicious gossip.
>Seems like an obvious cash cow
I think you mean "cash yak"
Hiroyuki sells identifiable user data to advertising and market research firms and god knows who else to make tons of cash off of Sup Forums.
this user knows what's up
4chins wouldn't be running if it wasn't making money
martin shkrells had a had in the ads, mark my words
I never used it since it was banned near schools and my city had all the schools spread out in such a way so that no pedo could live in the town. It also meant we couldn't use the app.
This app was king back in 2014. RIP.
How the hell was that bullshit worth anything
Damn I completely forgot about this app. Back in college I had the funnest time using it to troll people.
I was in the top 3 at my University while it was at its peak, this was the best app ever. Then they took away the ability to post to your basecamp and made you register a user profile and I uninstalled it without ever looking back.
i have no clue what that is
>he says as he trains google's neural network
This is not how ad networks serve users. Single user usage is tracked between apps as a method of discovering interest and common user interest is also accounted for given the current app. If it's Admob it's even worse, you could fire up an app that's just a blank screen and it'll still show you ads based on search history and website history unless you opt-out.
You're on a smartphone already, you fucking tard. Displaying ads wouldn't change that.
>Yik Yak was a local Sup Forums
ohh yes it was, man I had some good time on that app fucking with people. Got some good stories too if anyone is interested, I will be up for a while.
here's your (you), now post that shit nigga
theverge.com
then something was familiar
>To be fair, the anonymous messaging trend isn’t completely over. Back in February, North Carolina man named Garrett Grimsley was arrested for making what looked a lot like a threat of public violence on the app Whisper.
fuking Sup Forumsarrett my nigga
