What did they mean by this?
Microsoft joins Open Source Initiative

They are embracing Linux and FOSS philosophy
If you can't beat them, join them.
They want to make linux sucks microsoft dick for their money support
they basically told everyone that the CIA and NSA are now owning linux as well
Embrace
Extend
Extinguish
They've done it before, they'll do it again. Microsoft is EVIL, this isn't just some 90's meme, it's a fact. Anyone who deals with them will rue it someday.
They admitted defeat in the server and scientific market.
They also suck badly in the mobile market. The only thing they still have is the desktop market and its surrounding ecosystem whose importance has slowly dwindled away over the past 15 years.
>I may make jokes about Microsoft at times, but at the same time, I think the Microsoft hatred is a disease. I believe in open development, and that very much involves not just making the source open, but also not shutting other people and companies out. There are 'extremists' in the free software world, but that's one major reason why I don't call what I do 'free software' any more. I don't want to be associated with the people for whom it's about exclusion and hatred.

Before they extend and extinguish it, amirite?
Time to move to BSD boys.
this
This is why we need reactos to cuck them once and for all
You guys are retarded if you believe that microsoft is doing the old EEE routine here. It financially makes no fucking sense for them. Their cash cows are quickly becoming cloud services, whether thats stuff like Office365 or Azure. Extending their support for linux just makes their platforms more appealing to corporate and business types entrenched in a linux-specific world. But whatever, call me a shill, I guess.
>Extending their support for linux just makes their platforms more appealing to corporate and business types entrenched in a linux-specific world.
>corporate and business types entrenched in a linux-specific world.
Are there any examples of this you could share?
Gotta get that linux server-side code to run on windows server and accessible by the botnet.
Even Google and Apple do this regularly now too. Google bought Zagat just to tank them and use their own review system.
Microsoft will eventually have to rewrite nearly entire kernel and os stack or just use linux for the efficiency and performance gains over its bloated horrible spaghetti code. Desktop users don't really care about that in mass but if they ever do will be an issue. Long term if linux ever eats more desktop market share I wouldn't be shocked to see MS drop a linux distro that was compatible with Windows programs using a paid proprietary binary to do translation. Probably as one of those asshole subscription services too
>Are there any examples of this you could share?
Peugeot uses GNU/Linux on 20000 desktops and servers.
They're making a bunch of money from Linux on Azure.
This.
After the win10s defeat. Microsoft will announce a Win Flavoured distro + profesional grade Win emulation.
They want the (rest of) the server audience.
They're embracing it by selling user info to a bunch of pajeets? They're embracing it by doing literally everything against it? Either shit bait or genuine retardation.
ah-bloo-bloo
>m.wikipedia
Dumb phoneposter.
EEE is the obvious explanation here, but I think it's a bit more than that.
Are all correct. The way I see it, MS wants to hijack linux development to suit themselves. Now many companies do this; they pay money and write code because they needed a particular feature or driver, so this in itself isn't that alarming. But if they can get enough of their people contributing to the kernel, they might be attempt to introduce DRM into the kernel. Linus is still here, so we're okay for now, but I'm not sure if his successor will resist the fat paycheck from MS if they do attempt this.
They also might try to go the redhat route and create their own paid-to-use distro (like mentioned). Again, this wouldn't be too bad, I'm just worried about kernel development the most.
>They are embracing Linux
yes
>and FOSS philosophy
no. I think you meant "OSS philosophy"
I can't wait for someone to crack their binary if they do this, then everyone can just abandon microshit forever
If microsoft steals linux and makes it a paid product then I will shoot up their office, they can't keep getting away with this shit
Luckily linux is just a kernel. GNU will protect us.
I always think those bottles are filled with urine. am I right?
Ewwww
embrace extend extinguish
how are they going to extinguish it?
isn't open sores too big to fail now?
Next Windows will be of the UNIX family and use Linux as its kernel. Mark my words.
