no one have suggestions?
Have you tried IceWM?
>IceWM
oh yeah, the one that looks like XP, yeah i tried that one too.
i pretty much tried all the most common ones, that's why i ask for more obscure/newer ones..
>Tiling:
Bspwm
Xmonad
Ratpoison
>Floating:
2bwm
Windowchef
In the end a lot of them feel almost the same. I think that bspwm and 2bwm are the /comfiest/
oh thanks, bspwm i have necer tried although it's quite "common"
also 2bwm and windowchef, never heard of them. i'll look into that
Idk, have tried Gnome, KDE, XFCE, LxQT, Openbox, fvwm, icewn, and I dediced, that KDE, LxQT and XFCE are good enough for me.
>2bwm
i've settled down with XFCE/awesome personally but i like to try new things
bwm
disregard that lol i selected the word to google it and it quoted it
Cde's source is released and it has been fully reworked(its not open cde, that's am imitation)
sourceforge.net
some cool wms:
spectrwm
frankenwm
wingo
cwm
evilwm
also cool but not really useful:
awm (amigawm)
rio
i've always liked CDE pastel look but i wonder how it would addapt to modern gtk or qt applications
Try FrankenWM. It uses a ridiculously tiny amount of RAM and is similar to dwm, but with different tiling patterns. Here's my old OwOpost from when I used to use it.
Just use a vm to fuck around with de/wm op
HP-UXMotif GTK2 theme is quite good. I'm using it with FVWM and used the qt-styleplugins' gtk engine to have the same look on qt programs.
On the DE side of things, MaXX. However, 1.2.0 is never coming out:
Expect it to be abandoned in a few months.
>Have to do GUI project in JavaPajeetFX for school
>Debugger hits a breakpoint
>Entire DE freezes
Thanks Gnome, it's not like I didn't want to debug solely with print statements.
What are some noob friendly Tiling WMs I could try out during the Easter holidays?
Tried jwm yet?
>gnustep
how does that look like?
>how
you should use what instead of how when you ask what something looks/feels/sounds/... like.
treewm
JWM
Motif looks like this but better. The mwm is delightful to see.
Try Lumina.
This dude's fake Amiga stuff.
pasqualefrega.antiblog.com
icewm
Cool. I wish there were more retro WMs.
>Motif looks like this but better.
Heresy!
icewm-lite
twm
Don't fell for tiling, try openbox. You'd like it.
openbox sucks because it has an xml config file
And? You can't edit it or what?
Try IceWM then, dunno.
TWM/VTWM has an easier config file xwinman.org

I use Window Maker every day. Works great once you learn how to make a cohesive experience.
Here's an old screenshot before I figured out how to set icons for programs properly.
I really want to try out Amiwm but it's not in the AUR and I don't want to compile a 2 decade old WM.
icewm-lite is what i use.
I've found that most fvwm support GNUStep Dockapps and there's a high correleation between that and being good.
Modern XFCE does not and it sucks, OpenCDE does not and it doesn't even work.
CDE is probably the sexiest DE, perhaps even more than NeXT.
yea i dont like having to manually click where i want new windows and drag to create their size
i mean, its fun to have on another computer, but not as my main daily window manager
Here is a picture of a well-themed CDE desktop.
This, along with the Window Maker and FVWM95 screenshots are my ideal conception of what a computer interface should be.
If only there were extensive pixelart iconsets so you didn't have to use clashing modern vector based ones.
Isn't CDE really buggy and no support for stuff like UTF8 because development ceased for a decade before the source was released?
You can set them manually in Window Maker, they persist if even when open if you use the attributes insepctor:
simply right click the titlebar, click "Attributes" and set the icon for mini-icon and check the override client box. It will theme the appicon across the activity bar and the dock automatically.
yes, that's the only reason I don't use it. On arch, the package has been broken for two years or so and will actually kernel panic on the blue CDE loading screen if you try to boot it.
It was never updated to XDG-specs either so you need to use it's special login manager and special suite of apps.
MWM, aka Motif Window Manager, is the base for CDE. Think on CDE but without the menubar, so you can use anything you want like bevelbar.
What I meant is that there aren't any large pixelart iconsets that you can use for your desktop, with icons for a wife variety of software and whatnot.
KDE1 if you haven't tried it, it was ported to modern Linux a few years ago.
Has there actually come something out of it, like an active fork?
box-look.org
There are some.
linux.gr
KDE2 was peak KDE design. They made it worse with every release.

Herbstluftwm is the best
i used xmonad window manager for a while it was perfect but couldn't run games in full screen for some reason
There is no conceivable workflow where I'm going to use all terminals and therefore TWMs are useless.
Xfce is the best.
Is XFCE even relevent? Hasn't been maintained in years despite huge userbase and MATE seems to have surpassed it completely in features.
A computer should look like a computer
(sudo) gem install tiling
(needs ruby)
Tiles all your windows in a floating wm with a command / hotkey.
Nice with fluxbox :P
I like xfce3, like cde but working
Pic unrelated.
But thats just fucking disgusting, desu
slitaz - noice!
XFCE when working with someone else, so they can follow what I'm doing and don't ask me too many stupid questions and Awesome when alone.
i like all the lesser known WMs but they all are somewhat similar, i use PekWM everyday and have tried FrakenWM. they are cool
>cwm
this is actually the best window manager. you can config ssh-to and application launcher menus, as well as horiz/vert tile keybinds. all the screenshots suck so I'm attaching my own.
Do you have to recompile FrankenWM to change config?
the dev's last post on fagbook was 3 days ago and makes it sound like he's still working on it
Try EXWM
What's the story behind that name?
Herbstluftwm
Herbstluft means "autumn air" or autumn breeze" in nazi language
kek
This is how computers should look, this is the Motif Window Manager for you.
sexy
mwm/motif window manager stacking
running : xmobar, mp3blaster, ranger, feh
windowchef, wmutils.
hey ian
what does your xsession look like? Immediately after i login via it logs me out again. Also on debian

Ratpoison is great if you want no distraction and just get to work.
FVWM95
Basically just a fork of FVWM
KDE 2
You still can get a very similar looking desktop if you install the optional extras for TDE
enlightenment.
yes
I'll share my favorite site for this
gilesorr.com
what you said makes no sense. please dont interrupt this thread further
I use ratpoison btw
i3/i3-gaps, sane defaults and pretty gud customizability.
Equinox Desktop Environment is the best DE for Slackware
has anybody switched from i3 to sway? and if so are you liking it?
Don't use sway, don't support sway, don't even think of it.
Mac OS9 feels
o-okay
is it because wayland?
I'm on FVWM
He said that last summer, too. Shame that more people aren't interested in it, else we'd actually get something interesting out of it.
Heres my icewm-lite. icewm-lite is icewm without the panel. i use tint2 as my panel
My two favorites.
I didn't know the worst winamp theme creators from 1998 went on to make themes for window makers.
i like this one
