People ask for specific recommendations based on price, features, etc. anyway, but even if they didn't the list makes no sense. Why is the XZ1 Compact and iPhone SE a recommendation, but not the XZ1 non compact or iPhone 6 / 7? Nokia 7 Plus is a recommendation so it's not the size.

If you leave it attached to your headphones most of the time, it's probably not that annoying. You'll be plugging in a lightning connector instead of a 3.5mm one.
Huawei gets the worst treatment in light of recent news (Trump shooting down Qualcomm deal and Best Buy stop selling Huawei phones). Moto/Lenovo are less hated, Oneplus is the most polarizing with many attacking and defending them. They're most friendly to Xiaomi.

I have AdAway on my rooted tablet and it works beautifully, but I've no clue about this blockada. Does it work? Is it privacy invasive? Worth keeping around?

That's literally how it works. If you don't trust it, set up your own adblocking DNS with Pi-hole and use your home network as VPN when you're outside.
The app creates a local VPN and filters (DNS) traffic through that, it isn't sending your data anywhere. Like I said, the app is open source, if it was doing anything malicious people would see it.

I got mine brand new for $450. The only thing it lacks vs a s9 or half the other meme flagships at that price are memebezels and dual cameras. I can't complain and I'm excited to use it.
Samsung hasn't got their shit worked out just yet with their new camera. I say give it a few months and it'll be better than the Pixel 2, especially by then they'll have working ports of gcam. As they stand now, pixel 2 just stomps them because of the auto processing, hdr and focus+stabilization.

MFGs engineer their phones for high failure rates which they can't be held accountable for while driving things like battery life downhill to ensure limited lifetimes and recurrent purchases. Dropping 3.5mm gives them an opportunity to peddle their wares since everyone has a 3.5mm set of buds/phones or can purchase them for any price.
Same reason phones have glass backs, no removable batteries and no expandable storage - so they don't last as long, for whatever reason.

The lite variant is a mid-range phone, internationally it goes by the nova 2i moniker i believe, the regular mate 10 is just an international variant that never made it to american stores. If you like taking superb photos, the pro is definitely for you the "pro" mode gives more control over quality than any other android phone, and the npu automatically adjusts settings for certain objects in frame like plants, cats , people if you want it to.
