not some stupid anime girl that's for sure.

Mio is like the second worst girl, just slightly in front of Mugi

That was just an image I found on some site and downloaded. It wasn't a suggestion.

How about I suggest you some good hentai?

Please don't, this thread is for bass not booty.

Les Claypool

Bryan Beller, hands down

Oh I'm sorry.

Sid Vicious is best bassist

Sid Vicious is single-handedly responsible for the belief that bassists are inherently less talented than guitarists. Fuck him.

Matt Freeman is the best bassist at least in punk.

>bass not booty
>not bass not ass

it's like you've never heard of an eye rhyme

alliteration > eye-rhyme

this

do it desu

no he's not, this was a common saying before you fucking idiot. And for the most part it's true desu.

anyway answer is clearly thundercat

I knew that was wrong, I just really hate Sid Vicious.

Mike Dirnt is on a similar level or at least a close second to Freeman.

As for in general, a cliche response but Cliff Burton is definitely a contender.
Mikey Shoes from QOTSA is pretty damn good too

Mick Karn

Kim Gordon.

Pekka Pohjola
Taiji
Squarepusher

James Jamerson is the only answer for modern pop music. The only other contenders would have to be classical or jazz guys, but even Jaco took a lot from james jamerson.

btch pls, Mike Watt in punk

Alex Webster

Alex Webster

Fieldy

Peter Hook>>>>>>
Ritsu>>>>>

I mean, at any rate the credit would go to whomever it was that actually tracked it.

Good call on the Peter Hook

>best bassist
>all these people posting rock musicians

this thread disgusts me

I'm really, really surprised Paul McCartney hasn't been mentioned yet

Would you rather we post our favorite fishermen?

I'd rather people posted talented musicians not hacks

Fred Smith (Television)
Todd Brashear (Slint)
Holger Czukay (Can)
Peter Hook (Joy Division)

>stop liking what I don't like

How do you measure how good a bassist is ?
Don't the songwriters write the music, for everything including bass ?
I mean if it's just how well he can play then aren't there cover artists on youtube that have sucessfully replicated the playing of some of the most well known and aknowledged bassists in the world ?
Doesn't that make random youtube shlubs some of "the best" ?

Because he's not even remotely close to being considered a great bassist. Influential bassist, yeah, but not an incredible player by any means.

Rock musicians are objectively bad

I always wondered something similar: unless the songwriter writes *EVERYTHING* shouldn't every member of the band get writing credit for their part?

How has no one posted Wooten?

see

jean baudin. whos jean baudin you ask? an 11 string bassist who makes some of the coolest music from tapping all over the fret board.
sorry for sucking this guys dick but he really is an amazing bassist.

youtube.com/watch?v=qrM0yLS9tkk

John Wetton

I don't like these guys with the giant basses precisely 'cause of the tapping.

Tony Levin

i would love to see you try to play something like that. guys like this are some of the most talented musicians ever.

christ this is terrible

wrong
right

I couldn't. I don't see how that invalidates my distaste for compositions that are only/mostly tapping and tapping in general.

sorry i just realized how bitchy i sounded. i do admire these people though. i strive to be like them.

this m8s

he doesnt do ALL tapping though. he can also do some pretty sick slap. or just regular bassist in a band type thing. hes in a band called nuclear rabbit i think.

>guys like this are some of the most talented musicians ever.

cringe
This wouldn't even do for a highschool level composition/performance

Me

But, yeah as far as rock goes probably , , or pic related

Also the dude from Alien Ant Farm was pretty good I guess

>i would love to see you try

That is such a shit argument. Just because you're not a master chef doesn't mean you're not allowed to criticize food.

The fish!

This girl is pretty good.

I agree 100%. I came here to post James Jamerson.

By far the greatest bassist who ever lived

There are a few things that make a good bassist

1) Knowing how to use sound and what will sound best
2) Using note lengths in your favor
3) Groove! having a tight rhythm is probably the most important thing.
4)Phrasing
5) Being chill and not bored by playing the same thing too much because sometimes it's just what the song needs to make it breathe.

a few bassists that mastered all of those
>James Jamerson
>Paul Mccartney
>Tommy Cogbill
>Paul Jackson
>John Paul Jones
>Jaco Pastorius
>Nathan Watts

Most bassists write their own parts. Basslines usually have to imply the established harmony and rhythm of the song, which are important elements of a composition. Plenty of times full bands get credit for composition but often bands will just get payed for performance and whoever inside or outside the band who composed the melody, lyrics, chordal structure, form, etc. will get the writing credit. Bass lines, rhythm guitar parts, these are things thought of as being inherent to the performance of the music and not necessarily the composition, although each group tends to take a different stance on this.

I appreciate the Jack and James mentions but where the fuck is Mingus in this thread

mike watt

anyone who says otherwise hasn't heard mike watt

Victor Wooten

This board is full of shit.

Exactly. This is the answer any educated bassist would give. All the greats themselves point to him. He laid the foundation of modern bass playing. Virtuosity like that of Jaco or Scott Lafaro is impressive, but even Jaco used Jamerson lines

youtube.com/watch?v=f4ywN94bpK0

I like mike mills. not the best, but he's really good

Seconding John Wetton. He's a criminally underrated bass player.

Mick Karn

youtube.com/watch?v=iqNs31mVikk

Zach Hill

Big love, nice choice. That fretless playing is very idiosyncratic

John Entwistle you plebs

Totally! Talking about criminallt underrated bass player! Mr John Deacon

Easily Mike Watt or Kira Roessler what are you talking about

The only acceptable answer in terms of rock bassist.

It's Bootsy Collins.

Jaco mastered a specific way of playing the electric bass in a way that influenced pretty much all bassists to come

James Jamerson mastered a specific way of playing the electric bass in a way that influenced pretty much all bassists to come

and Scott Lafarro mastered a specific way of playing the double bass in a way that influenced pretty much all bassists to come

You can't really compare them but those guys along with Ray Brown are to me the best bassists ever and all in all they're all equal.

And of course the most influential bassist of all time is Jimmy Blanton. It's just goes further back though to the guy who built the first bass.

the most important factors for me are 1) sounding good and 2) originality
other important factors include technical skill, versatility, songwriting, showmanship

my favorite bassist is Ron Carter, pic related

he looks like a stretched out marvin gaye here

Victor Wooten

For rock maybe Chris Squire I dunno.
