That's pretty impressive, if AMD hadn't hyped FX as some sort of i7 killer, but a budget part, people would've built with it more because it is fast as shit if you can take advantage.

from an engineering and a programming perspective the FX was a marvel.
lean, small cores, huge I/O and in almost all cases up to 4790k, I was getting more performance on gnu radio on a 8350 than the $350 i7 X7X0k part from intel.
The bulldozer arch lived up to it's initial hype, many top 500 supercomputers and especially some top 10 green supercomputers had the magny cores opterons which offered tremendous I/O capabilities to drive GPGPU applications... something that intel never had.
On the gaymin' side of things, because gaymers are stupid and like crows, they like shiny stuff, FX didn't shine in several applications and it got a lot of shit from many shill sites.
Bulldozer's greatest issue was the cache and the CMT, which was in most cases unable to be properly utilized by s/w that only focused either on physical cores only, or SMT cores.
This is not an fx vs sandy/ivy bridge thread, but I will say those last 2 things.
The most ridiculous bench the shills utilized to cripple bulldozer was when they encoded in a review some 480p clip using an ancient format, which was obviously single thread, and compared the 8 core bulldozer to the 2 core i3.
And secondly, bulldozer's hidden potential(also people forget that recently it was unveiled that intel was cheating, sacrificing security for performance) was moved on to zen and with a few legacy software friendly changes(see cache, SMT) bulldozer came to shine under a new hood.

This is so true. If you could feed the cores, the FX was blistering fast. To this day it's still my budget workstation rig of choice. Ryzen feels like a good step up though when it comes to gaming, but the general desktop experience is very similar.

FX 8 core and a $79 970 board really is the budget builder's choice these days, I can't even recommend people buy business class machines for gaming anymore because you can have something for cheap that actually overclocks a little and isn't terribly ancient.

TL;DR Pistol was the bitch that was whispering venom into Logan's ear (and cock) talking shit about Wendell.

Something I heard and I think it was even from Tek Syndicate was that Bulldozer was a rebadged server part and that an AMD marketer heard about AMD made a 8-core that could be made on the cheap and they decided to sell them as desktop parts. Which explains why it wasn't very good at single thread but was always a workhorse for anything multi threaded
