What university?

I have a baritone voice and I struggle to hit a4 comfortably without falsetto, does this mean I have a bass voice?

Do you have a PhD?

a small anonymous private american university

Tips for writing counterpoint melodies or layering melodies in general?

>didn't say h/mu/

How can I learn the piano if I have no money and only a 61 keys keyboard? Or should I just give up until I have money enough to pay a teacher?

What's your most well known composition ?

well no that does not mean you are bass. because i know very few men who can hit A4 without falsetto unless you're looking at heavy metal singers who are really pushing their chest voice up really high. you are still a baritone. however you may want to read
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baritone
and see which TYPE of baritone you are...

now if I fuck this model

not yet. but i have years of experience beyond a 26 year old doctoral student :)

Is it possible to learn piano and some basic music theory at 29? Or should I not even bother at this late stage?

so does being old outweigh a degree?

Is Kanye West the Wolfgang Moatart of this generation?

most importantly, keep the chord structure in mind.
as long as you know what your chordal progression is, you can go ahead and write multiple melodies over top.

*also, when one melody goes up --- make the other come down. or, be aware of the harmonies if they are traveling in the same direction. contrary motion is always favorable.

*also be aware, how is each voice functioning at any point in time, as harmony, or as melody??

How do I enjoy Philip glass? His music is literally painful to listen to for me.

any book recommendations on music theory? looking for something that's like the fucking bible of music theory that's relatively easy to follow so i can learn everything from scratch to an advanced stage

I'm entering a composition program as a freshman in the fall. Piano lessons seem to be a requirement, but as of now I have little to no sight reading skill and it takes me very long to learn music, but I can improvise fairly freely through modes of transposition and such. Do you think it would be valuable to take some formal lessons over the summer, or do I just need to practice more?

Thanks for the info! I'm definitely a low baritone in the vain of Michael Gira, Johnny Cash, and that guy from The National, definitely can't belt it out like Bowie, Serj Tankian and Corey Taylor, I'll look into it.

my best recommendation is this book, which i give to all my beginning piano students.

alfred.com/Products/Alfreds-Basic-Adult-All-in-One-Course-Book-1--00-5753.aspx

You can easily work through it yourself. It teaches chords, notes, sight reading, etc. Also if there's a particular song you'd like to learn, try YouTube. There are many tutorials on specific songs that show how to play in "piano roll" format, such as this one!
youtube.com/watch?v=fjEjdMkMels

not OP here
michael new's youtube channel is nice

YES!!!
i once had a piano student aged 76. She came to me and said "i've always wanted to learn piano, and just now have the time to learn, can you teach me?" and she did learn and performed in my recital that year!!!!

to get started see

thanks mate will look into it

well yes! experience beats a degree every time, duh!

NO WAY, and i am so sick of him being lauded as some kind of genius.

(1) if he produced every single track, rather than rely on others to write it for him.

(2) if he wrote music for other people to perform, rather than just himself.

(3) if he could do something other than just write lyrics.

(4) if he could write in different styles - not just hip hop (mozart could write opera, symphony, concerto, quartet, etc)

(5) does kanye even understand music theory? NO.

kanye is great --- but way overrated.

I'm 17 and love singing. My range is very poor, however. I can hit E2 well and can kind of hit D2 as well. C4 Is basically the top of my range, however. D4 Is kind of a struggle to hit, and anything above that is scratchy, strained, and doesn't sound good. My falsetto isn't very consistent.

Will these things change as I get older? What type of voice does my vocal range fall under?

actually me too. i saw him perform live once on piano. it was interesting, but just didn't hit me --- even live!

his music is intellectually of interest, but emotionally void for the most part IMO.

>does kanye even understand music theory?
he clearly has a grasp on at least the basics you retard

i advise this to all my student just getting going. it is VERY easy to understand and VERY step by step. i've had MANY students have success with this!!

alfred essentials of music theory.

you can work thru it yourself. beyond this,

Is going to school for music well worth it? Does it actually open a lot of opportunities for most?

WHY ARE WE YELLING

we aren't

lessons are ALWAYS valuable, because you will get instantaneous feedback on what you need to work on.

But make sure to tell the teacher you choose about what you'll be doing in the fall. A good teacher will help structure your summer to get the most out of it, to most prepare you for what you'll be doing.

Yes you will need to learn piano for composition. However, remember to also balance the "old school" skills with "new school" skills --- such as DIGITAL MUSIC. Learn how to read waveforms, how to run garageband or ableton live.

This. I'm no Kanye fanboy, but he definately knows music. Also, your argument can be used against Mozart. Why did he only write for the classicals? What about the romantics? Just hip hop baka.

I play guitar but have no idea about music theory, how should I learn?

You know that the "classical era" is an anachronistic term right? Mozart didn't sit down and say "I am going to write classical music today." The romantics didn't even fucking exist when Mozart was alive either, you fucking moron.

Are the Beatles good?

sounds like you are a bass.
depends on how far through puberty you are. men someimes continue puberty through their early 20s, so you may gain some notes on the low end!
you can work on your falsetto, at least learning where your voice breaks so that you can better control your chest vs falsetto.

dont' worry about range so much as breath control, vibrato, and finding material that fits your voice!! work with what you HAVE ALREADY --- don't get upset with notes you CANNOT hit. and just adjust any song's key to where you feel comfortable!!!

Is this objectively Beethoven 's magnum opus?

youtube.com/watch?v=U0YrG4pI004

oh man, it depends.
most schools are focused on OLD SCHOOl shit (like the classical stuff). these are fine if ou want to join a symphony, opera, etc.

other schools are NEW SCHOOL (like berklee in boston) which can teach ou about modern music business, songwriting techniques, publishing, etc. this is good if you want to work in POP music...

still other schools can teach ENGINEERING or PRODUCING (like full sail, recording workshop, etc) which are good if you want to do live sound or studio work.

just make sure you get into the KIND of music school that will help you with what you ULTIMATELY want to do in music!!!

What's the best way to learn guitar?

you fool. mozart started to tread romantic territory with his requiem. if he'd have lived longer, he most certainly have started to branch out. kanye has already lived 3 years longer than mozart.

sorry but when kanye writes a musical (opera) or film music or any other style then i'll call him closer to mozart.

KANYE IS NOT MOZART. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

OP is this lazy songwriting/production?
clyp.it/o2l1pssw
What do you think of the idea of pop songs with spaced out ambient interludes

I feel like I could be doing a lot more with these little musical ideas I get, I tend to be lazy and layer them with roundes and looping

this is just a your opinion thing but what do you think is the next logical step for music and if one were to create a new genre of music what would be the most important factor to its creation

yes. beatles= closer to mozart than kanye.

simply look at their body of work, and it's various styles. they manipulated technology, explored different world styles of music, tried lots of new things.

yes. the beatles are great. (even though i don't really listen to them)

Not OP

I really like the song you posted. How did you do the sort of messed up/lo-fi thing around 2:10 when it gets quiet, and also when it starts to get louder around 3:00?

I'm brand new to production.

Ha! OP here. A true classic, thank you for posting.

I am not racist but keep an open mind to all kinds of music. I mean, couldn't James Brown be considered racist with "Say it Loud I'm Black and I'm Proud"?

Have you heard the Johnny Rebel interview w/ Howard Stern? Truly worth listening to --- HILARIOUS!!!

youtube.com/watch?v=Lf1x8s1Pixw

i'm a pianist. not a guitarist.
go find a guitar teacher i guess.

? Do you mean what I was doing to my vocal track witch is called tremolo
or the "instruments" were just a theremin and this distorted water sample

Well it's kind of like the percussion and sound that was present before everything gets quiet just gets kind of... watered down? My best guess would be a low pass, but I'm really really new to this kind of stuff.

>clyp.it/o2l1pssw
DUDE!!!
OP here. THis is great! Very experimental. Very psychedlic also in the way that it moves from one section to another without any kind of real repetition.

I love that you are layering them and looping them.

Keep making original music like this! Find your niche audience.....

I've started learning the keyboard last month by myself, currently working on Czerny's Practical Method for Beginners. any thoughts on this book? should I ditch for something else? some people online rec the Scarlatti sonatas for beginners due to their musicality

well i think the best authority on this is adam harper. he is the only person i know of that is actively defining new genres of music all the time by identifying trends on soundcloud, online communities, etc.

he has written for fader mag and also has a book out. his blog is here:
rougesfoam.blogspot.com/

he is a true musicologist tuned into only the latest in new styles.

i think the future of music lies in various AESTHETICS, or combinations of music plus art or music plus dance or music plus lifestyle.

maybe think of HealthGoth, Vaporwave, or Cute as indicators of this....

well scarlatti is going to present some challenge to someone who is only 2 months in. czerny is good. i would instead look for some SONATINAS not SONATAS -- they 're intended for beginners. there are many great ones out there, and you can get compilation books of sonatinas by various composers like Gurlitt, Clementi, etc.
honestly the scarlatti are very beautiful though.

thanks man the whole aesthetics idea is pretty cool

What are your favorite artists? Any current ones?

what do you think makes a tone pleasing to someones ears

Brothertiger is my latest fave.
Not only is the music good, but he is creating some real 3-D kinds of effects with instrument layering. He just openend a recording studio in Brooklyn.

Thank you that means a lot! never showed my work a lot

underrated post

no clue.
sorry....

that man has a ballsack on his chin

any lower and they'd be chestnuts lmao

I want to bring together a band to play my songs and gig around; do you have any advice for this sort of thing?

Hey Piano Professor, I just wrote/recorded this instrumental song on piano.

soundcloud.com/jason-pegram/waves

What do you think? Personally, I think I've got a better performance in me, and I might add more instrumentation/vocals.

thanks again whats your favorite album . if you have any questions about guitar technique you could ask them to me but thats about all im good for

make sure you have a regular practice time - SCHEDULE IT!

don't let anyone in the band fuck around with starting practice ON time

set your goals out in writing ahead of time -- make them realistic, attainable, and measurable
("we will perform live twice by the end of the summer")

make sure all members on on the same page as far as musical direction of the group.

get 3 REALLY good songs out there recorded PROFESSIONALLY

make an online presence in multiple places: bandcamp, soundcloud, youtube, bandsintown, songkick, spotify, facebook, etc.

put out NEW MUSIC constantly ---

sounds good!

i like how the music evolves --- and doesn't repeat a whole bunch in terms of notes....
i like how shit gets srs around 1:15....love it!

some piano playing feedback....
in the soft parts some of the notes are hit really harshly --- think about how to CONNECT each of the notes one to the next..... in a slight gradation of volume. don't let any single note stick out from the texture.

yes i would love to hear this as a starting point to a more complex arrangement!

brings a new meaning to the word chesticles

what genre?
i can't say a single album is better unless you name a genre, bitch.

Thanks man! The thing I'm most self-conscious about on that recording is the ritardando before the first "srs" part at 1:15--there are some obviously botched notes and it's not super confident. How it's played the second time (around the 3:10 mark) is the true intention

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, dude!!

As a piano player, what do you think of guitarists?

right-o.
just get into the recording with a DAW and cut and paste the 2nd version into the 1st and you're done....

underrated post

What's the oldest student you've ever got?
Is it ever too late to be a good pianist?

what note comes after g#

please read this post:
never too late

All right, thank you!
I've always played piano, but not very well. Just as a hobby. I'm thinking of getting serious lessons soon.

You think we're good singers? Thanks.

Rate my improvisation senpai

How would I go about making hip hop music?

>clyp.it/dqchpj1k

very pretty!

you are using some nice chords and changes there.... you obviously have some hardcore musical training.

i like how you bring the opening chord progression back at the end of it all.

what are you doing with these recordings?

pic related

>hardcore

How did you know? I was chained up to the piano from the age of 6 and my mother would constantly beat me with a cane if I screwed up a measure.

In all seriousness I only have Grade 8 ABRSM.

Nothing much, usually I will just click record and play away, and see what happens.

Why do you think music schools today don't encourage individuality? Being an artist instead of just a musician.
Why aren't modern artists, like Brian Wilson and Radiohead for example, taught along side the artists from the past?

well that's one way to learn i guess.

please read my prior post:
depends on which school you go to. but i agree --- not enough of the modern masters are inside the curriculum of many music schools. not all schools though!

another conundrum --- why do we keep teaching kids in high schools how to participate in just marching bands and choirs? why not teach them how to be producers and engineers?

we need more HIP HOP and EDM and ROCK education in schools in general --- as well as lesser genres too

I can't afford lessons, is there any way to teach myself that won't fuck up my technique later on?

What's the best chord progression, in your opinion? I make little songs on the piano, and I can't break out of the simple stuff, and I'd like to see what a professional thinks sounds cool

what do you know about set theory in 20th century music and what are your favorite sets?

Ok, I must have small hands or I'm really out of practice, but do you have any tips to playing harder chords (like 7ths) comfortably?

funding? It's pretty common for school boards, at least in America, as far as I know, tend to put the arts on the back burner. Athletics and STEM are usually a higher priority. Music production lately have become more of a DIY thing. Bands and choir still have their importance - teaching discipline, music theory & appreciation, and etc; if you think about it, schools aren't quite ready to remove teachers with seniority which a lot of band directors have, so schools are kind of stuck with that until that person can retire (though, often they hire retired directors).

I went to a private high school with some generous donors, and a few years after I graduated, they had set up music DAW classes as an elective, along with programming/coding. The public schools, even the nicer ones, are pretty behind on integrating technology on classrooms (hopefully it's improving at this point, but then again, our shithead of a governor haven't bothered with the budget yet).

I think the band and choir groups are still small/relatively unpopular though.
