This is going to be our second album. Our first album got recorded at this one studio, and the reason why he wanted us to do it self-produced because the guy took over a year to mix and master the songs because he was supposed to do it for "free". We paid the guy for the studio sessions but the mixing and mastering was free. Ended up getting the stems and we're getting another guy to do the mix and master.
I've tried telling him that a good producer is going to help us achieve our sound rather than pin us down, but a bad experience he had with a previous producer in his old solo act made him think this way now.
He's actually really delusional and thinks that we can fix everything in the mix and master. Regardless of how shitty the original recording is. To give you an idea, he thinks we'll be fine using around 3 mics for the drums.
tfw besides a few choir patches everything is terrible or cheesy
Logan Ramirez
yeah, omnisphere has never been fantastic for presets, if you're looking for a vst that's good for that kind of thing, nexus generally has some pretty decent edm - ish presets.
If that's the sound you're trying to get, of course.
Jack White
That sounds like it was an awful experience, and after a year he still didn't complete the job? In the future you can post job offers on places like Freelancer/UpWork.
I do a lot of freelancing on UpWork, the talent pool for audio related jobs is pretty good. Best part is you dictate the price in your posting, so budget is seldom a problem.
Omnisphere is a powerhouse for movie/game type compositions. What didn't you like about it?
Jeremiah Miller
this is cool. Bring the clap loop and clap in the drop way way up. Liking it a lot so far tho
Worked on this for a minute today. Sound okay senpai.
David Rogers
why do u guys use clyp over soundcloud?
Isaac Evans
Upload it to clyp then we'll give feedback. Read the sticky.
Thomas Rodriguez
so we dont have to deal with shitty self promo soundcloud spam
Landon Morris
...
Robert Anderson
Primarily because its anonymous and doesn't require an account, but also because its much quicker to upload to. Literally drag and drop, as opposed to soundcloud which requires an account and song details etc
Angel Sanders
my bad. deleted my posts to keep things clean. thanks and sorry for not reading like a noob.
somebody told me this would be better if the mixing was better, and that it was "too flat". any mix guides? im using fl studio
also if anyone could tell me what that exactly means, because i really have no idea what "too flat" means musically. i also dont really understand the concept of "mixing" tbqh
Jeremiah Flores
dude this honestly is pretty damn good but im a humongous pleb so what do i know
these are definitely some very sick ideas. my only advice would be to find a new synth. the current one sound incredibly generic whereas all the other sounds in this song are really nice and unique. it also just sounds sterile. definitely keep going with it though.
These sound like vox samples run through some pitch shifting then with loads of FX to me. Just pick up a sampler (most DAWs come with one) and learn how to use it.
Same goes for the drums, maybe Battery but thats just because its an all-round good drum VST.
Isaac Morris
god you're an asshole
Josiah Ramirez
I can't play any instruments and have been messing around in ableton for a few months and just make weird sounds how shitty is this?
most of us do have soundclouds or youtubes or reverbnations, but clyp.it is the language of /prod/ always has been. Its what prevents us turning into mindless dump-n-dash soundcloud threads, and promotes analysis and constructive criticism in-thread
Jacob Foster
Should I get Melodyne for creating vocal harmonies? I'm not much of a singer and working with a software like that would make making music a lot easier for me. Are there any cheaper/free alternatives?
Ethan Wood
While just "making shitty sounds" can be a good way to learn synthesis and tone, usually doesn't work musically. Take the time to learn some scales and music theory, goes a long way to helping make better stuff. The stuff you've made is pretty unpleasant to listen to seeing as it doesn't seem to have any kind of musical themes going for it.
Keep at it though, practice makes perfect.
Evan Diaz
I appreciate the feedback
Jack White
With a bit of work you can get izotope's vocalsynth doing the same thing and sounding fairly natural, its cheaper and I'm pretty sure it has a demo period too.
wow silly me, im forgot to actually participate in the thread
this is really fucking cool
this is also pretty cool imo, it almost feels like shoegaze to me (sweet trip-core but more vacuumy)
nothing of value in that 9 and a half minutes, unless you actually do like harsh noise
ditch the dubstep gimmick sub is too loud and is drowning out the entire mix, growl sounds under-developed and boring (massive-core). what are you mixing on?
what are you going to use it for? it sounds good but distorted
Landon Wilson
more synth variation would definitely help.
add an arp in the background, and turn up the volume of the cymbals to fill in some of the emptiness in the mix
and if possible, try not to use that particular sound, it sorta sounds like the babby's - first -fm - synthesis tutorial type synth that you hear all over youtube
Jason Sanders
new here?
Thanks the advice. It's very much still just an idea. Hopefully I can avoid familiarity early on.
As for yourself, the problem is definitely not familiarity, but palatability. I filenew'd you because I personally wouldn't know where to start. It would be tedious. If you were to try and salvage it, I'd start by: -managing the clipping -giving the mix some space (dimension expander, panning) -toning down the hi's -adding bass? Maybe this isn't the genre for it but idk man, it might help glue it all together. -giving it some dynamics, for christ's sake
there's a bass in here? All I hear is a kick and a snare.
i dig
Kevin Thompson
Not really sure what I'm going to use it for yet, I was just inspired by Late Registration to use a soul music sample in something.
Chase Lee
Renoise familia represent clyp.it/2l4cb5ej Intentionally overcompressing this shit for a synthwave vibe, tho it probably sounds a bit too sharp now
Ryan Ross
I haven't even come close to mastering it yet.
No, I know. I'll add some warm reverb to the cymbals to fill the space. And as for the growl, I made that in like two minutes. So yeah, it's not what it's going to sound like when it's finished.
It's a constant bass tone. I'll chop it up and make it hit with the growl later on.
Jack Campbell
>mastering i have a feeling you dont know what that means
Adam Lopez
Cool, do the changes you already mentioned and you have a good drop in your hands. What do you mean how terrible is it? Are you looking for artifacts or did you make it? Really good. Add a rise/sweep build up at the start into the first "drop", play with more percussion. The themes and synth sound are all there but occasionally the song lacks drive. Keep at it!
Sebastian Ramirez
Artifacts. I could only find a 128kbps version of the song, so it was either that or spend forever hunting down a somewhat obscure 1970s soul record.
Samuel Rodriguez
what song? i can try to find it for you
Owen Morgan
Oh, I'm sorry. I misread. If you're asking my DAW it's FL Studio.
Julian Powell
yikes
im asking you what audio setup you are using
unless you're a poor fool who thinks that the mixing process comes at the very end
Bentley Walker
hotlinemiamicore/10
but honestly, i feel like this is on it's way to something really cool with some improvements to the mix
widen up your snare, pan your hats, and switch out your kick for something with more mids/highs like something in this track: youtube.com/watch?v=BzuPI7tk9B8
most of the problems are based around a lot of synths being unnecesarily mono
keep the kick/basses mono, everything else should be a bit wider
Alexander Walker
>he mixes while making his music lol
Luke Gonzalez
If thats the case its not that bad, obviously the quality isn't incredible but there's not really any massive problems with it. What are you using the sample for?
Tyler Taylor
Not that guy but I definitely mix while writing, makes the end mixdown a hell of a lot easier and I often use mix techniques to make simple writing interesting.

here's a 320 u cockslut, now open wide and say thanks
literally most of the clyps are edm/dubstep shit like that, why arent you people producing innovative stuff?
Joseph Walker
>le edm is easy to make meme How about you make us a dubstep song to show everyone how easy it is.
Hunter Peterson
stop making a fool out of yourself, most 15 year olds are making EDM BANGERS or trap bangers, its like playing dadrock on guitar, not easy but anyone could do it after some time spent on it
Elijah Rivera
Prove me wrong and make one for us.
Isaac Mitchell
are you retarded? edm is garbage noone sane would do it
Gabriel Lopez
You clearly know what you're talking about.
Christian Long
Help me out /prod/ I've been fucking around with this for a couple of hours and my ears are full. Give me a second opinion. Even if it's "scrap this entirely". clyp.it/mljlddcs
Luis Morgan
edm retard detected
Parker Ortiz
you must be fun at parties. 1. it´s popular right now, meaning everyone sane will do it and want to copy it in Pop songs. I bet Will.I.Am, Deadmau5 and Hardwell are more sane than Sup Forums shitposters ever will be. 2. If you think whole genres are shit instead of individual songs you shouldnt be posting to Sup Forums in the first place grandpa
maybe you´re just getting old :^) cant keep up with the times anymore
Jose Edwards
scrap this entirely
seriously though, it's alright not sure what you're going for, but the stereo to mono balance seems incorrect. The bass is stereo while the main song is all mono.
Hudson Clark
OH SHIT YOU ARE RETARDED AS FUCK what are you even doing here? if its popular and "fun" and a trend you shouldnt do it, trendy people are the reason music has no value nowadays >Will.iam >deadmaus >hardwell literally untalented hacks
Jayden Scott
>The bass is stereo while the main song is all mono. Hrm, I'd not noticed this, cheers. After I've had an ear clearing break when I go back to it I'll focus on that first.
Ethan Long
Not that guy but make literally anything to contribute to the thread. We'll wait.
>2. If you think whole genres are shit instead of individual songs you shouldnt be posting to Sup Forums in the first place grandpa There are exceptions. All "noise" "harsh noise" Merzbow type shit is complete crap.
Austin Miller
pls respond. I know it would sound nicer but would it actually help when mixing?
Easton Wilson
>deadmau5 is untalented Listen to While 1
Nicholas Jackson
ITT talentless retards calling professionals hacks :^)
when you´re angrily shitposting at home with no money or record label deal and it´s time to go to bed remember nobody likes your shit and it has absolutely zero value to anyone compared to trendy music.
>if its popular fun and trendy you shouldnt do it okay i get it you´re a sad lonely hipster who wants to be edgy online coz accepting everything is mainstream now. Go change your 1840´s style wooden diabers baby hipster boy i think you got a little excited over trolling there :^)
Luke Miller
I personally think subwoofers are only useful if you're making stuff that will be played through big rigs. It depends on the genre the most I think. Mixing rock bands won't need a subwoofer.
Asher Long
maybe you´re supposed to do drugs while having noise/merzbow on
Noah Young
kek'd loudly, go make some money with your edm big boy
Christopher Morris
If you need to do drugs to appreciate something then it's shit.
no you're not supposed to do drugs, all you need is to have the 'noise gene' on. someone yesterday said some babies like the sound of a vacuum cleaner while others don't. those who like it probably have the potential to be noise fans
Thomas Johnson
>someone yesterday said some babies like the sound of a vacuum cleaner while others don't. That was me shitposting ironically trying to get someone to take noise seriously and listen to it.
Easton Walker
Which link did you use senpai?
Connor Peterson
Is any of this shit worth buying?
Jayden Hall
I don't know about the VST but the hardware version of Groove Machine is fun.
Parker Taylor
>Going into /prod/uction with the intention of making money And you called us retarded
Isaac Hill
How do you git gud like this son of a bitch?
Brandon Wood
not really. you get most of them there anyway with the signature bundle.

Is Logic Pro X good starter software for an 11 year old who plays piano really well?
I'm also getting her a used Akai mpk mini.

Biased Logic guru here, entrenched since Logic 5.5 (Win), and now on Logic Pro X.
Logic has equal parts modern and antiquated features. The sampler is old, but still rather capable (the ESX24). The synths are equal parts old (ES2, ES__ Series in general), but there are also some new fancy ones that give you wavetable functionality, as well as ALCHEMY, which is just a beast.
Logic's strengths: Large stock library of sampler instruments (orchestral, piano, shitty guitar sampler instruments, that kinda thing). They are O.K. Not stellar. The mixing tools such as EQ and compression and such are top tier out of the box.
She will at least be able to sit there and load up a sampler instrument and record some midi from the MPK into logic pretty easily. Editing instruments is probably going to be a few years away, as it gets rather complicated.
Logic has always been a very midi-centric daw, its strengths being mixing and software instruments.
I started with Logic 5.5 somewhere around 15 years old, and I'm 30 now, using Logic Pro X. If I am to be honest, I probably would choose ableton if I started from scratch today, but I am perfectly content to use logic as I am far too entrenched. She will not likely outgrow the software any time soon.
At the end of the day, the price is right. Logic used to cost 999 dollars. Now its cheaper than ableton.
