i don't know when music became work, but i wish it never had. i feel obligated to pursue this dream. i'm too far in. my parents pay my rent for both my apartment and my rehearsal space that i've decked out with gear, paid for with money i didn't earn. i work three days a week at a coffeeshop like a sad sack trust fund hipster. my parents dig my music so much that they're actually encouraging this lifestyle. soundcloud.com/yeenar my real dad's dead though, so i use that to mentally justify my accepting thousands of dollars from my stepdad's bank account every year--like, "i suffered through my dad dying, so it's ok to allow myself this freebie from God." anyhow, music's dead too. soundcloud.com/cashbomb i killed it. it gave me an inch and i tried to take a mile. it was fun to play guitar; now i crave fame and recognition and attention for having poured whatever passion my twinky body had into my musical endeavors. what a fuckin joke. i wish i could dip out now, but i can't. can't get a real job and grow up and leave the stupid childish dream behind. "dream" is even too shiny a word for what it is. it's an obsession. not like Kobe's obsession with being the best--no, my obsession doesn't drive me to greatness. it just drives me crazy. i sit around and do nothing like every other schmuck on the planet, and i expect to skyrocket into artistic greatness. the only way that'll happen is if i die young, thereby inflating the work i've put out thus far with the gas of tragedy

like the other guy said i do cut samples for most tracks
an example of a track that i don't do that on is banana oatmeal
the effects i use for processing drums are of course a compressor, EQ, transient shaper and reverb but the way i get that bouncy playfulness like on business casual is with a vocoder set to noise, completely unvoiced with like a 25% dry/wet and then i just mess with the depth and formant until it sounds good
really the most important thing is to start with good samples tho

of course they realize that you're not going to be working on "your dream" every waking hour of every day
don't beat yourself up if you're feeling particularly uninspired for a while
just go for a walk in the woods, look at the flowers, appreciate the little things, get some good sleep
your music is good but you need to become better at mixing and mastering
everyone and their mom can sing and play the guitar
once you're good at mixing and mastering then you become a real asset in the music industry
