I've always really enjoyed gamelan music (and "world music" but I hate that term, it's just folk music)

but it doesn't fit into my music listening habits/customs. I like sitting down with albums, I like understanding lyrics. I could listen to compilations or whatever but I never feel compelled to, I feel like that doesn't do the music justice anyway.

I took a class years ago that went into some depth about how the rhythms and patterns of gamelan music are the same as the really complex patterns the Balinese use to control their irrigation cycles, and I think it ties into their religion also. I should read up on that again, I've forgotten most of it but it was really interesting.

I guess I appreciate Gamelan more than I like it, though. It's cool as hell and interesting,but not something I ever put on to listen to, maybe it's just to foreign and 'ching chong-y' to be relaxing, and too abstract to be engaging enough to catch my undivided attention without forcing it

And yeah, I hate the term 'world music' especially the way that OP used it. Like someone into traditional music from one 3rd world country would be expected to be into all of them

I was trying to describe the high pitched percussion sound of gamelan, and it was the first thing that came to mind, maybe it isn't the best descriptor but it's not too far off the mark

And my complaint about the term 'world music' is that it's too broad, ridiculously so. And it has connotations of a really annoying fan base (pretentious old NPR listening upper middle class granolas)
