Whenever I listen to an album, I often think of the sound as sounding similar in colour or theme to the album cover. Usually when I listen to Loveless I think of it as being pink, so if it had that cover I might think it sounded different.

This. The cover art is an opportunity for the artist to present their vision in visual form as well. A fitting one makes for a more coherent whole.
