you might say "But they're not that successful" but even their cultish fanbase doesn't really make sense

Jimmy Buffett is good though. He doesn't have tons of hits or anything, it's as simple as having great songs and lots of old people liking to get drunk and go to your concerts

His success is legitimate af

But he's a hack

Not really. Hack implies he's trying to be something he's not. He knows exactly what he's doing, who he's playing for.

Just because you're not into his style (which is fine, I don't like it much either), doesn't invalidate him.

His success doesn't defy any logic whatsoever, especially if you understand 70s rock music and the mentality of a 40 something in the 21st century.

He has one hit song. And out of that he has a line of hotels and restaurants, three best-selling books, and a legion of annoying fans who follow him around like he's The Grateful Dead. All I want to know is why him?

Jimmy Buffett is far from a hack, he's a really good songwriter. His songs are simple and instantly grab you. I would call people like Radiohead a hack before I called Jimmy Buffett a hack. The fact that he still makes millions of dollars a year playing shows without radio play/mtv attention/magazine covers is indicative of someone who is not a 'hack'

compared to some FOTM fake internet hype shit that most of Sup Forums consider 'patrician', acts with no memorable songs that rely on gimmicks or production to sound interesting

This is really not that hard to understand if you actually listen to his music.

His schtick is so carefully catered to his fanbase, it is neither surprising he is a success nor his fans are so loyal.

He is the epitome of middle aged parents who take a cruise to the Bahamas, drink a shit ton of cocktails and passing out at nine o'clock, and spend the rest of their cruise sitting in their rooms watching television, perfectly content.

His music is chill even if you have no friends like me. Nothing but good vibes, not hard to see why he's popular.

I can't figure out who their fanbase is tho

I've never met anyone who unironically liked them

Tom Waits

Ed Shereen

What's not to get? It's faux-indie pop for boring white girls.

...

kings of fucking léon

>But they're not that successful

Back in the '90s/early '00s they still managed to sell millions of records.

Extreme white trash

check your class privilege, there is white trash all over my town that likes this garbage.

Michael Jackson. I honestly struggle to understand how Thriller is the best selling abum of all time.

It's inoffensive faux-emotional soft rock. How does that defy logic?

not wildly successful but still loved by tons and tons of people

How much of a fucking contrarian do you need to be to dislike Jimmy Buffett? What's not to like? He's a genuinely nice guy who loves writing and playing music and a lot of his songs are legitimately great.

>not posting with your trip because you're embarrassed to be associated with the opinion

Oh Montie

FACTS

Two hits.

>check your class privilege

weird white kids who walk funny and join rap battle groups on facebook

I don't care what you have to say, a pirate looks at forty is deep...

This, although he did make super catchy pop music, it still puzzles me that an androgynous, soft-spoken black guy with a castrato voice became the biggest star in 'Murica

quick everyone, post your favorite buffett songs

There's so many of them they have a unique name, "Juggalos". They are the textbook example of trailer trash.

what the heck is wrong with Styx?

Kenny G t b h

Maybe you should actually listen to the two albums they put out before they went full-commercial. They're worth your time.

>heck
it's past your bedtime

I know they're an easy target, but it still baffles me that of all the music in the world, there are people that choose to listen to this.

Not logic defying. If you listen to pop country, you'll notice that every song seems like it was either written by Jimmy Buffett or a frat guy that really like Jimmy Buffett. This is music for people who don't listen to music, who just want basic melodies with lyrics that paint a pleasant picture.

answer the question you jerk

They appeal to pre-pubescent girls, plus that member is alpha I mean he gets to sleep with underage girls. Even Scaruffi can't get laid like that.

great taste, friend

Volcano is best album

Kanye, it seems he literally just tells people he's a music genius and they fucking believe him...

...

This was a number one album in a few countries.

...

this, apparently the most successful solo career out of all the beatles. How is this?

Is this a joke?

no

Anyone ever been to the jimmy buffett restaraunt in new orleans?

great place! terrific cat fish platters

Because he was the safe one.

Paul and George were weird vegan Hindus, and John is pretty self-explanatory. After the flower power zeitgeist of the 60s waned, Ringo was the most digestible for the mainstream ear.

Their britpop stuff was really catchy and helped capture the mood of the time in england

...

This is a meme i will never fall for again.

Turns out bands that get picked up by a major label and made huge werent fucking good before hand, they probably just sound a lot like the kind of band that you would hear on the radio, but with shit-tier production quality.

yeah, I like this one but I really have no idea what the cultural climate must have been like for this to get as big as it did.

as a side note, have you heard his recent stuff? it's fucking trash.

CAN'T STOOGE THE NUGE

He's got a few great tracks.

Feminem

One album wonder.

There's no experience more unpleasant than a JB show. Imagine a sea of fat 60 year olds with foam parrot hats, Hawaiian shirts, and a cheap mixed drink in their hand. It's less about the music and more of a lifestyle thing for them.

average Dave Matthews Band show in 20 years.jpg

Kind of surprised since he normally doesn't like singer songwriters.

Retarded instrumentation, inane lyrics, incredibly inflated egos

They're just genuinely fun and creative.
No bullshit.
People like that.

You forgot the most horrible part of all which is Dennis DeYoung's voice. Any time I've tried listening to one of his songs (and believe me, I tried) my ears want to detach themselves from my skull and catch a plane ride to the next continent.

I guess he's ok with JB because the guy is just a beach bum who likes to have a good time instead of preach to you like James Taylor, Carly Simon, and those other faggots.

youtu.be/p2USQuKSOhg

I hate Margaritaville, I really do.

Just curious which ones you tried to listen to?

Strange, I didn't know Sup Forums is full of 50 year olds who own a timeshare.

I like em and all but how the fuck does a band like The B-52s manage to get actual mainstream popularity

You Need Love, Mademoiselle, Fooling Yourself, Mr. Roboto. It doesn't matter. Any song he sings lead vocals is akin to a monkey being thrown into a grain thresher.

By singing a song called "love-shack" and making a video of said song.

I'm your friend user :^)

literally everybody on earth knows fucking rock lobster. that it not a song that normal people should enjoy. love shack makes sense, but theyve had honest to god hits before that

these are all very vague generalities. Anything specific? Are you talking about their 70s or 80s stuff? What about the instrumentation is retarded? Which lyrics are you referring to? What do egos have to do with the music?

I actually really love DeYoung's voice. He can delve a little too far into cheese but he's got a great range and a lot of power in his singing.

Have you ever seen Buffett live? I have, and the crowd is a lot younger than you think

In my opinion "lady" was their best song which coincidentally was their first charted hit.
You will probably hate it but here it is.

youtube.com/watch?v=QumxOQganfo

>Have you ever seen Buffett live? I have, and the crowd is a lot younger than you think
Rolling Stones crowds aren't as old as you think either. I guess all the boomers who ever wanted to see them already did so years ago.

Jimmy Buffett is an underrated songwriter, none of you have ever heard any of his albums

Geddy Lee's voice was also pretty horrible back in the day; thankfully he's dropped a few octaves since then.

stfu
panda is song of the year, if future rapped it everybody would jerk over it but because its by some nobody everybody calls it a meme

I live on Long Island and his summer concerts here are more of an excuse for the kids to go tailgate/get trashed at the beach. The concert is an afterthought

Styx was the first live concert I ever saw, It was the "Equinox" Tour. It was a very good show by the way.

their first album is my fucking jam you faggot

I think the average age of Stones audiences was at its highest in the 90s-early 2000s and it's gotten gradually younger since then.

Even Jerry Lee Lewis has fairly young people at his shows. There's a few grandpas here and there but most of them are under 50.

Rolling Stones concerts were only full of geriatrics in Anglo countries. when they'd tour in Latin America it's all crazy kids and just like their shows were in the 70s.

>Jimmy Buffett (born in Mississippi, but raised in Alabama) has concocted a hybrid of singer-songwriter, comedian, romantic individualist, eccentric and drunkard. He has dedicated his career to the sea.

>After moving to Florida, Buffett founds his mission in life. His first masterpiece was A White Sport Coat & A Pink Crustacean (Dunhill, 1973), that contains colloquial vignettes such as Great Fillin' Station Holdup and They Don't Dance Like Carmen No More, and Death Of An Unpopular Poet, the first of a long gallery of nostalgic and ironic characters that express his humane but detached view of life and the world: Lord Buckley's God's Own Drunk on Living & Dying in 3/4 Time (Dunhill, 1974), that also contains the catchy Come Monday, Pirate Looks At Forty and Life Is Just A Tire Swing on A1A (Dunhill, 1974); Livingston Saturday Night on Rancho Deluxe (United Artists, 1975) Havana Daydreaming on Havana Daydreamin' (ABC, 1976), which also contains the bizarre My Head Hurts My Feet Stink; and the most famous of them all, the ode to laziness and relaxation Margaritaville, on Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes (ABC, 1977), which also contains Changes In Attitudes. His style slowly mutated into a quirky Carabbean honky-tonk (i.e., colored with elements of reggae, salsa and calypso).

>Cheeseburger in Paradise, Cowboy In The Jungle, African Friend and Son Of A Son Of A Sailor make Son Of a Son Of a Sailor (ABC, 1978) one of his best.

get fucked op

>Styx was the first live concert I ever saw
my nigga.

They were the first band I really latched onto and I ended up seeing them at a county fair in 2001 and was blown away despite the shitty atmosphere and the fact that it was really only half the original band.

>I actually really love DeYoung's voice. He can delve a little too far into cheese but he's got a great range and a lot of power in his singing

Sup, Dennis DeYoung's nephew.

Frankly. I can't speak for every one of my generation (I'm 55) but we'd rather remember the Stones as how they were instead of how they sound and perform now,

C&C and The Mollusk are weird but they have great music.

If Dennis was my uncle things would be different around here...

Paul McCartney as a solo artist is one of the best selling musicians of all time, no fucking way is Starr a bigger star than him.

Oh, hello Dave Mustaine. Shouldn't you be shitposting in /metal/ now?

Well..it was 1976. I saw them again during the "Pieces of Eight" tour. a few years later

That's ok because the 1981 tour was the last time the Stones were even remotely interesting live.
