Blood sugar sex magic and californication are pretty good 90's alternative. Other then that they are mediocre. Not terrible.

They're extremely popular and widely acclaimed so your music elitists tend to act like they dislike them. No one actually thinks they're terrible.

Eh, they seem to be oddly polarizing. It's incredibly mainstream to both enjoy them, or to make fun of them ruthlessly (like that Onion-esque headline about skibabidop there getting the stomach flu)

I will say, I think Frusciante is a good guitarist and has written some pretty enjoyable guitar parts for some pretty shitty songs

And Flea is a pretty talented musician who seems to have pretty good taste surprisingly judging by some of the really obscure side project stuff he's been involved with (NOT Atoms for Peace)(although AFP does help redeem him in my eyes too lol)

Shit, Flea even almost became a member of New Order after Ian Curtis checked out early and they were trying to figure out how to reconfigure JD into a new band and auditioned a bunch of new bassists

This is a fair assessment. Though, Flea's ability as a musician gets so over exaggerated. He's a good bassist who is reasonably technically skilled for a rock bassist but a lot of the stuff he does is harmonically pretty dull and the majority of RHCP songs are like a step up from Nirvana as far as beginner rock bands playing their stuff as practice pieces.

Yeah, if you watch, say, Thom Yorke play a lot of the bass parts he wrote from like The Eraser (or even most of AFP's self titled were written and recorded by Thom actually) and compare them playing them live, they're pretty much on par.

Shit there are even some of those songs that Thom clowns Flea on the bass when you compare them (see like...Amok, The Hollow Earth, Harrowdown Hill, a few others)

Flea is a solid bassist though. Maybe Thom Yorke is just underrated as a bassist lol.

For all the material they've released over the years I think most of it is pretty boring. I used to really love BSSM though, so I have respect for them

Let it be known that it was mostly JF's idea to have all those soft pop rock songs instead of funk. By The Way was about 60% his songwriting and music and you can see that it was the least funky album they'd ever made up to that point. Even when they'd do funk songs, John would just play the same exact chord progressions as Hillel Slovak with no changes.

i know the popular opinion is just to join on the bandwagon and hate the shit out of them, but they're a great fucking band. i think the main issue on Sup Forums is just that anybody into that style of music is going to prefer faith no more, because they actually are better. rchp have made some amazing albums.

What did y'all think of The Getaway? The new minimalistic sound is pretty nice, also dig the slightly jazzy drumming, but they played it too safe most of the time. Dream of a Samurai and Dark Necessities are the standouts. Wish they'd do wilder stuff like the former.

kinda off-topic, but while RHCP have their highs and lows, but Frusciante's solo albums are mostly fantastic. The Will To Death is one of my favorite albums.
