You know, having read Goodbye XXth Century, here's my guess.

It's one thing when Thurston was a wide-eyed college dropout and of course when he met Gordon in 1980 he'd fall for her. But as their music changed, so did they. Sonic Youth got older and older, they got kids and settled down. The differences between the bandmates became more and more apparent and kept growing. And given Moore and Gordon both had huge egos, with Thurston being quite of a fuckup (partly because of his father's death in 1976, partly because he was just an autist from school), it's not so surprising eventually shit was bound to happen.

Anyway, the band was already on the brink of breaking up. Kim didn't want to play bass, Ranaldo and Moore had solo material… They could make another record like Eternal or more SYR, maybe.
