jazz pleb here, only ever heard kind of blue.

gonna check out a love supreme tonight, but is there any essentials that i need to listen to?

Fuck essentials, just find stuff that you like

any reccomendations?

What did you like about kind of blue and what instrument did you like best on it?

Not that guy, but some recommendations for more of that impressionist, rich chordal piano style would be great. specific evans albums and other similar players I guess

I'd recommend solo piano albums, incuding Bill Evans - Alone, Paul Bley - Open to Love, and Ran Blake - Driftwoods.
Other pianists you might like are Erroll Garner, Keith Jarrett, George Shearing, Fred Hersch, and John Taylor.

A lot of great jazz musicians worked together throughout the 50's and 60's, so a really great way to find more stuff you like is to check out albums from jazz musicians who collaborated on albums you already know you like. Kind of Blue, for example, had Bill Evans on piano and John Coltrane on sax, so you could check out some of their work next.

Pic related is also a great album to start with.

Awesome, thanks heaps!

Anyone have any 2016 jazz favorites? I haven't kept up with 2016 releases.

Is it just me, or is Miles Davis' album "Nefertiti" extremely overlooked/underrated?

listened to pic related quite recently, it was cheesely wonderful

Here's the link for this week's /BLINDFOLD TEST/.

Wildcard theme this week.

The best I've heard is Masabumi Kikuchi - Black Orpheus. Ches Smith - The Bell is supposed to be good but I haven't heard it yet. I'd trust anything on ECM though. If you can find it, Vinnie Sperrazza Plays Tadd Dameron is good.

Not by jazz musicians

I honestly hate this album. I like the more recent solo stuff tho

Thanks man, I'll look into those.

Hey btw did you ever listen to In The Moment by Makaya McCraven? It's from early last year. I think I asked you about it a long time ago and you said it was on your list to check out. I was curious what you thought about it.

I remember being not very impressed by it. Overall it was so repetitive and groove-based that I couldn't see it being very interesting to listen to more than once or maybe twice.

Ah, bummer. I thought it was a pretty sweet fusion album, though definitely more focused on a groove and more sparse in terms of the solos and actual improvisation.

I just saw Chris Corsano live at the Vancouver Jazz Festival and it was an incredible show.

I picked up a vinyl copy of this album as well:
