Haven't gotten into funk but I think this should help new-comers
Maggot Brain or One Nation Under Groove?
Thanks, there's some great stuff in here for people who are new to the genre. I'd also advise people not to shy away from compilations. There are some especially good comps of funk music from places like ghana and nigeria.
I've always been partial to Maggot Brain, desu
I'm going to say that the best introduction for James Brown isn't The Payback IMO - I'd even rec Live at the Apollo Vol. III (Revolution of the Mind) over it, if we're doing double albums.
I got into him through the Star Time box set, and then got even more into him through a few anthologies that focused on the funk:
>Foundations of Funk 1964-1969
>Funk Power 1970
>Make It Funky: 1971-1975
I don't think I've ever found a musician who has recorded so much great material, so there are plenty of other recordings you could get, but those were a powerful introduction to his work
I might post some shares if anyone is interested. I'll probably cross post to the sharethread, but what's the bump limit? It's currently at 290 replies. Should I just wait until the new thread?
I am assuming they're at least V0
I'm a beginner so whatever is fine desu
maggot brain when youre stoned, nation under one groove when youre drunk
I've never done any sharing before, so lmk if they could be higher quality or if there's anything I should do differently.

One Nation Under A Groove is way better.
No, but I can look into getting some. I'm not super familiar with their work.

Mick Jessup - Take it easy when you get down / Instrumental :
What are the defining characteristics of funk?
If metal is guitars and distortion (very rough characterization, I know), what is funk? Instrumentation? Harmony? Melody?
it often revolves around a bass/guitar/drums groove that emphasizes the first beat ("the one") on which vocals and other instruments can take their turn
but subgenres like p-funk or boogie can differ. funk music can and was adapted to a lot of styles : caribbean music, indian music, whatever, so it's not a rule that absolutely needs to be followed
9th creation - Mellow music / A step ahead :
