kinda sucks so far
is gut
Long time IDM listener here.
Very slow-paced drum and bass, lazy sounding synths, long progressive builds that lead into themselves.
I don't understand why it was released under Aphex Twin, as this work is very reminiscent of his Analord Series under AFX, especially no 2/3.
The only track of any complexity that makes it stand out from an ocean of IDM in present times is "05 - CIRKLON3 [ Кoлхoзнaя mix ]". If this EP were released by a different musician , I doubt anyone would hear it asides from it being on some random soundcloud / youtube 'chill beats' playlist.
Honestly, 4/10 overall. You might as well call this EP Analord no.12. Glad I torrented it instead, disappointed I wasted bandwidth on the flac version.
It's atrocious- so was Syro
I was just texting my friend earlier today when I was trying to listen to it, like, god, I used to think he was a genius. I can barely make it through a single song of the regressive bland shit he's putting out these days. I want to believe he's just taking the piss
It's a good ambient album with good synths and interesting textures, but not as complex as some other Richards works listening to this ep was truly delightful especially the Stockhausen style cheetah 1 & 2. I'll give 7,6
yeah this one comes on slower than any aphex/afx release since, like, i care because you do
super chill, heavy focus on texture and rhythm, very unassuming
i like it
> "good ambient album"
> "Interesting textures"
It's nine tenths monotonous drummed out excrement. This ep was him fucking around with a drum machine he bought, made one good song with it (#5), and the rest are just tests packed in so it wasn't a single. Richard's either taking the piss, doesn't care anymore and is trying to cash in on the marketability of his name, or made a bet with uziq that he could make the objectively shit music and still sell more records than him, most likely all three at once.
maybe its just music
continuing, to better illustrate my point, I've compiled a playlist I believe to be very stylistically similar to the cheetah ep, by taking one track each EP in the analord series. For those of you that have access to cheetah ep to compare and contrast against the songs below, I hope to try and demonstrate that this EP is Richard just rehashing very old beats, and sub-par ones at that.
Analord 1: #7 Analord 158b

Analord 2: #4 Bwoon dub

Analord 3: #5 Stabbij

Analord 4: #4 Breath march

Analord 5: #3 Gong acid

Analord 6: #3 I'm self employed

Analord 7: #3 Afx acid 04

Analord 8: #4 Backdoor.spyboter.A

Analord 9: #4 Backdoor.netshadow

Analord 10: #1 Fenixfunk 5
youtube.com
Analord 11: #5 Not disturbing mammoth 1 (mono)

honestly, none of those have the production quality of anything on cheetah, with the exception of maybe backdoor.netshadow
don't get me wrong, i like analord as much as the next person, but it's a different beast entirely
it`s trash imo

I wouldn't say the production quality is 'better' than analord, just that Richard has experimented more to produce what sounds he likes off the bat after almost 20 years of producing hundreds upon hundreds of unreleased tracks (the ones he referred to in an interview). I would say there's truth to this, but all those tracks are him just practicing his craft, refining his ability, and on that note, Cheetah just came off to me as him playing around with his new Cheetah drum machine, where the refinement came about on track #5. That's why I drew a contrast to the analord series with the other songs on Cheetah, because it felt more like James dabbling in drum and bass w/ synth / acid techno, adhereing to the genre's definition, not actually expressing anything intentional, just seeing what he could do.
cont. that's why I felt that the EP was more appropriate under AFX, than Aphex; but with him returning more to mainstream attention with the release of syro, the Aphex moniker draws a larger crowd. Who knows, could be sign of more to come? Or maybe his 'recent divorce' from his wife has kept him only releasing tracks on soundcloud and as EPs to minimize alimony payments, ahah
>Who knows, could be sign of more to come?
I hope so.
I support Richard forever.
recent divorce? what recent divorce?
WHAT RECENT DIVORCE?
by the sounds of it, i'm assuming he was divorced recently
this
It's an aphex in-joke. If you've ever read / listened to any interviews he's given, going all the way back to the release of SAW ('92), it's 20% talking about his music and life, 80% taking the piss / mischievous antics. They’re all worth checking out, you’re guaranteed lols.
Richard divorcing his wife was a joke he made to a spanish magazine in 2011.
Q. You've recently said that you have 6 albums completed. Is this true? Will you put out a new album?
A. I have more than that. More than 10 or 11 that are already finished and many more loose tracks.
Q. Why have you waited so long to get something new?
A. I didn't want my ex-wife to benefit from them, so I've waited until I got divorced, she was stealing my money.
Complete interview link (archive): afxtwin.tumblr.com
His piss taking is most succinct on Warp’s bio of him (worth a read for lols):

Another good interview is the one he and Mike (uziq) gave on the album they made together: Expert Knob Twiddlers.

He's really hypo-critical of uziq in this one, mocking his lack of commercial success, but in a satirical manner. It's weird. Half of his lies and attacks are truth, the other half satire / jest.
Lol, is this real?
>Q. Why have you waited so long to get something new?
>A. I didn't want my ex-wife to benefit from them, so I've waited until I got divorced, she was stealing my money.
Seriously, why the fuck do people care about Aphex Twin? Maybe he is above me but I'm just so bored with his music. "CIRKLON3 [ Кoлхoзнaя mix ]" wasn't bad but wasn't great. Overall, I'm feeling 1.6/10
because they... like.. his music? :-O
But what's the fucking appeal in insipid bleeps and bloops?
they sound good in people's earholes
:^)
seriously, you have shit taste, go listen to your meme rap shithead
i don't understand this "critique"...there's harmony, melody, and rhythm just like most music. is it insipid because it has no vocals? because it doesn't follow traditional song structures?
Well, why do you like it?
If you want to approach it in an autistic manner, music is nothing more than the curvature of gaseous particles to create periodic oscillations of constant amplitude to give sine waves, then when changed to differentiating hertz, produces a different noise. The continual string of these noises gives the impression of a 'beat'. Just as much as sex is the banal repetition of insert and removing the penis from an orifice, until climax.
It's not about what it is, it's all about what you feel. You like baked potatoes, I prefer them mashed. Different strokes for different folks.
I've accomplished my goal, I'm making you all angry.
but you didn't I just said it sounded good
You've not made me angry, you're just trying to insight rage by de-legitimizing peoples established tastes (and extent identities), because they don't conform with your own opinion, and I find that more telling of your character, than your affirmation that our tastes are 'shit'; that you're more content to spend your time deconstructing meaningful discussion and discovery of original content, than creating / experiencing your own.
damn...
not even him but now youve incited an existential crisis within me
thought the album was really boring and there's a lot of better electronic artists out these days. aphex really hasn't produced anything meaningful since he's come back
