When someone asks what music you like do you just name off your plebbiest favorites to please them or do you attempt to gauge their musical sophistication for the off-chance that they won't be a waste of your time?
When someone asks what music you like do you just name off your plebbiest favorites to please them or do you attempt to...
I just say "I don't really listen to music that much".
It's just too much effort, anymore.
young thug, drone metal, and pavement
I just name my favorite artists.
I don't care enough to lie or purposely name only the obscure stuff I like.
I just name a couple artists/genres I've been listening to recently. I'm not too far down the hole, so one or two are recognizable for some people.
Sometimes I get to tell people where the term "shoegaze" comes from.
I just say "It's obscure underground shit, you probably never heard of"
why would someone ask me what music I like
Depends on what kind of person I'm talking to, really. If there's a person that I know is narrow-minded about other things I try to avoid the subject.
I like talking about what music I like with other people but most people doesn't really get it :(
I tell them death grips and swans, and they have no idea what im talking about
I just say what my favourite artists are; I have a normie taste in music.
my current response is a deadpan and very sincere;
> well... the problem with music is that it's just so unrealistic
the reactions are always fascinating - and very telling
Because they wanna form a friendship with you :)
I have business cards for this situation with my last.fm and RYM links printed on them.
>I like talking about what music I like with other people but most people doesn't really get it :(
This. There's nothing I enjoy talking about more irl.
if you post a photo of it i'll give back your mom's nudes
I say "I like everything" so that the conversation moves on smoothly
they were in my wallet which I lost last night from getting mugged playing Pokemon Go
"Everything" and sometimes i'll outright lie and say I'm really into katy perry and justin timberlake.
I have always had a huge interest in music. Played clarinet for multiple years as a kid, played the drums for a few years.
Spent countless hours of listening to music I don't like just to "get" it. Read about the origins, social context etc.
Music is probably one of the only things I actually love talking about. An ex-gf of mine used to ask me questions about the music I was listening to because she knew it was one of the only times I would get excited about something, and for some reason she loved every second of it.
This is so easy on the paper, so why do I always spill spaghettis everywhere when I don't expect the question... it's literally the breaking point of my autism
Why do people always ask this question
What are they looking for? What is the secret hidden in people's musical preferences? Why would they be interested in it? What level of satisfaction do they expect from any answer?
Maybe say you like "a lot of things", rather than "everything". It's technically more true and so less likely to hurt your autism. Then you can take the conversation from there.
Works for me anyway.
youre not old enough to be posting here
Name off a few pleb artist, then slide the artist of your desire at the end and see if they pick it up. woop woop
See
Im 25
What if you don't like any pleb artists? Artists that seem really well-known on Sup Forums and other music-related websites are often relatively obscure to the average person.
then you have some growing up to do pal
>mfw I'm BOHEMEONIZING Judy's clothes...
I just say a bit of everything, trying to explain more obscure music genres to people who have never ever heard of any of it is really just a waste of time.
bossa nova, chopped and screwed, emo
Most people seem really ignorant of most music outside of the realm of radio wave shit and what ever their parents listened to. It really depends on who I'm talking to what kind of answer I'll give. If I know it's someone who might be into music I'll get a little specific with genres and artists, otherwise I'll just give a blanket answer like "I enjoy everything".
A girl was talking to me at a Noise show before and I said I really like Nine Inch Nails for their noise music :^)
hey dude, where you been at? haven't seen you post in a long time.
it depends on the person
if i think they won't know any of my favorite artists then i say 'you wouldn't know any of the artists i listen to so it's pointless to talk about it', so they keep asking me insisting that they do until they finally give up and walk away with a disgusted, defeated look
for a plebeian to hear the music i listen to, just the name of an artist i like, the movies i watch, any entertainment i like, it's like being caught masturbating by my grandmother, nobody wants that, if it's a patrician it's okay
if i think they might know then i get excited and make an attempt by naming off some of the stuff someone is more likely to know, if they know it then i get really excited at the chance to talk to someone with a similar taste and go overboard with my favorites with no regard for obscurity, then they stop talking and start walking away as i get closer and closer and my voice gets higher and higher until they're running away as i scream WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PROGRESSIVE DREAMFUNK RECORD YOU GOD DAMN PIECE OF SHIT? YOU PROBABLY LISTEN TO POST-AVANT JAZZCORE ANYWAY LOSER and fall on my knees and break into treats
eh, different kinds of stuff.
Mostly rock
It's not like I know anyone who knows any stuff I listen to anyways. Not because my taste is at all obscure
I've never even met anyone who knows any Sup Forumscore other than Radiohead, Kanye or Talking Heads
>inb4 I only listen to Sup Forumscore
it's an example, don't be autistic
>treats
sounds yummy
I'm always here, since 2009
what's the image from, or is it OC? I'm interested thanks to the artstyle.
I've always wanted to ask, how many copies of that same picture do you have? What is that from anyways?
it's from the 2+2=5 music video
I have 43 files on my gaston vinas folder
This. I just say that I'm really into music and I like a lot of different styles. It's a simple and quick answer that covers a lot of ground and then by the person's response I know whether to go further into what I like or to just leave it at that.
I also try to ask for the other person's favorite artists before they ask me so I can try and gauge the type of artists they might know so I don't name off artists that are too plebby but so I also don't go naming artists they have probably never heard of.
thanks, that was a fun video, maybe I should really go give radiohead a try
You just tell them your favorite genre and don't go into specifics. Nobody really cares about your music taste, at least nobody worth your time.
Also this
Has this ever happened to anyone here? I think it happened to me once with a qt metal girl.
>I can try and gauge the type of artists they might know so I don't name off artists that are too plebby
Why do you care though? If you like an artist then you shouldn't be afraid to admit to it.
>what music do you like user?
>joy division
>oh like the shirt
>sure
that's what you get you faggot manchild
Nobody ever asks me what music I like because I'm interesting and I have interesting stuff to say.
>ITT: autism
I tell them I'm a jazz artist so I listen to a lot of jazz, but other than that I list off my favorite mainstream artists at the time because i don't listen to weird Sup Forums shit.
Why is everyone here such an autist? Just say what you like and be done with it. Half the time I talk about a band the other person doesn't know who I'm talking about. Just don't be autistic about it so they don't think you're weird, and they'll just go something like "Huh, I've never heard of them, I'll check em out."
>from getting mugged playing Pokemon Go
Is this a joke? Please tell me this is some meme I'm not getting. You can't be this much of an autist manchild.
Stop hanging around plebs, stop wanting pleb approval.
I hang with art students/artist/designers and they don't give a shit about that and the chances they are into some weird shit also are bigger. Never in my life that question caused me any trouble.
I bang qts with Sup Forumscore recommendations.
attempt to gauge their musical sophistication for the off-chance that they won't be a waste of my time
I just tell them my actual patrician favourite band without acting like it's weird or anything. If they act weird about it, their fault and problem.
>I hang with art students/artist/designers
you and everyone you associate are awful
My local art scene is pretty small, snobby assholes and wannabe art rockstars are a minority, so people don't give a fuck about them.
All the shoegaze listening qts are there. Sup Forums feels threads don't get me anymore, most girls have regular to good taste.
good job making me feel like a shitty idiot
>I just tell them my actual patrician favourite band
who is it then?
>umm I listen to a lot of stuff
>"Like what"
>most girls have regular to good taste.
yeah, maybe in the art scene where those chicks dig everything and anything pretentious
>A lot of stuff, mostly hip hop I guess
Fucking genius my man. You can only fail with people who adamantly state their dislike of hip hop, and who wants to prolong their interactions with those types? Nobody, that's who.
Get to know you local art scene, most of the time is not as bad as one would think and there is something for everyone. Most people are a weird as you.
Met my best friend in art school and she is the only girl I know that listens to Merzbow unironically
>those chicks dig everything and anything pretentious
Some of them do, some don't. You don't know if you don't try.
Doesn't work that well these days, they usually start listing off trap rappers :\
>what genre do you listen to, user?
Uh... Bob Dylan and Punk...
Tfw I go to one of the best art schools in my country, also play in a band and socialise with people who listen to mu/core style music all the time but my social anxiety stope me from being able to make friends so I just sit in my room on Sup Forums. At school I was special for just listening to the smiths and could find other cool people but here I don't stand out at all.
i go to (supposedly) one of the best arts school in my country and here the ones considered weirdos enter art school, welp, it seems i am too weird even for them, not one friend in the career besides old highschool friends, fuck standing out or being different if you wanna be that shitty go to suck cock, many in art school try to stand out , i've seen some very cringy efforts
in my campus, art students really try to stand out holy shit, in fact, vaporwave is starting to become a trend between them and they do fb posts going all "do you know this? i dont think so" posts with macintosh plus' floral shoppe, disgusting
hehe
i just tell them the fmily genre:
.rock
.electronic
.alternative
.jazz
and an "i think that's it" to not cause any stupid judgings, they rarely ask me specifications after that
I dont talk to people
>Feist, Florence + the Machine, I like stuff like that.
I just leave it at that since they won't know anything else I like.
>.alternative
if someone said that to me i would say 'wtf is alternative'
You know user! C'mon and play some of those cool student alt rock bands. You've been talking about them all night. You wanna help me with dishes?
This
>tfw no qt shit resolution bus boy gf
Because people want to meet you. They don't really care about your music taste, they just want to know about you and start a conversation.
It's pretty ridiculous to base a relationship in music taste, or to pretend to get cute patrician girls that like you because of the music you like. (To be honest, there was this cute girl I knew. I thought that she was attractive, and even more when I knew she was a fan of Bork, Swans and Portishead. But we never dated, and I now know it was just a superficial attraction).
"Just in general, or like, weird sub-genres?"
One friend inquired further and I said shoegaze. Turns out he actually knew what that is and he lurks here.
where is this magical place
I carry around a printed off copy of my iTunes for reference.
>tfw I dress like a total nerd but love metal and when people ask me what I listen to and say "Metal, mostly" they act weird and say "Huh, never would have guessed" and then stop talking to me
>tfw a qt metal girl will never ask me what I listen to
I just say 'noisy guitar stuff'
> see cute girl wearing Joy Division shirt
> say "Hey, I like your shirt"
> she rolls her eyes at my display of plebocity
>mfw she thought I was a pleb
> mfw she was wearing it ironically
>mfw patrician girl thinks Im a pleb
Its pain on so many different levels
Those bands are for everybody
>implying she even knew who joy division were
should have laughed at her instead
Can this be a thing?
Straight up openly laugh at Joy Division shirts.
i say we pull a peta and throw paint on them
I say we shoot meme arrows at them
>not wearing closer
> babby's first indie cred music
> joy division
> good
> liking music
