>Am I forgetting anyone?
Thousands.

Where is Ringo?

Where do you think they should go?

then add some suggestions so that it contributes to the conversation instead of blindly criticizing people, you giant queer.

Postin in a bait thread

knopfler is god tier for sure

Dave Mustaine & Marty Friedman for Elder God Tier 2016

Satriani and Van Halen are pretty good, Slash is nothing special, Jack White is nothing special, Clapton is pretty good, Townsend is at least good.

Aaron North

youtu.be/BW1fBeqsn_s

Townshend literally stated in Rolling Stone interviews that he's a mediocre guitar player

Also, have you heard Slash live or on any non-album recordings? The guy fucking RIPS. He's miles better than the old GNR days.

Jon Anderson of Yes in pretty good tier
Hendrix is Elder God tier his placement under pretty good baited me into this post
Also Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine belongs in everyone's top 100 Rock guitarists should they want to have any credibility

Were you expecting him to tell Rolling Stone that he is in fact an Elder God tier guitarist? Kek

so not only is he a bad guitarist, he's delusional and a liar. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

>Eddy Van Halen over Jimi Hendrix
you fucking nigger
also
>listening to boring ass guitar solos
I listen to jazz if I want guitar solos
Rock was never about virtuosity

okay fine, but either way he's just okay

Townsend was one of the first players to bring that aggressive, almost proto-punk style of guitar playing into popularity. He was nothing flashy but the guitar parts work wonderfully with the rhythm section, just doing what they need to, it takes at least some skill to be able to do that.

>rock n' roll
>boring ass guitar solos
and you're calling ME a nigger? listen to yourself

I agree with you. Sounding good and having technical skill aren't always synonymous. I enjoy listening to The Who and AC/DC but that doesn't mean they're necessarily talented guitarists

Eric Johnson in god tier.
Yngwie in shit tier.

Also you forgot Rick Nielsen in god tier.

Troll post

John Squire

>tom morello
>jack white
>dave grohl
>billie joe armstrong
Op confirmed for being a complete faggot. Kys plz

>Thread about rock guitarists
>Actually talk about rock guitarists
I don't see the problem here, you colossal faggot.

Where the fuck is Robert Fripp

Let's be honest here, "best guitarist" titles just go to the guitarists with the most money
That's why you see Angus and Cobain on "greatest guitarists of all time" lists

Dadrock guitarist tier list kid
get with the program you fucking hipster

(You)'re gonna need to do better than that.

King Crimson and Bowie are essential dadrock.

Knopfler is the GOAT. Met him once too. Incredibly down to earth.

OP here

If you'd like to add someone to this list, suggest a name and a tier placement, if at least 2 other people agree with you and I will put it on

I suggest Kanye West
Elder God Tier

Johnny Marr - Elder God tier

>no D. Boon

discarded

The best guitarists are always going to be some jazz/classical guys, and lists of the best rock guitarists are always the most popular and "cool" ones with Hendrix at a guaranteed #1.
You can't really distill instrumental skill down to a number and rank them like that, "best X" lists are always totally subjective.

agree

>Jon Anderson
>pretty good tier
YES

how do i get into knopfler
everyone jerks off to him but i don't know where to begin
what's the essential knopfler-core

This.

frank zappa in elder god tier
if you disagree you're pretty dumb

That guy from Unwound is pretty cool

I agree

Exactly Frank Zappa made school and i'd put him on god of gods tier particularly

Frank Zappa

>Hendrix rip off as elder god tier when Hendrix himself is pretty good

Kys you cunt

Garcia, Ry Cooder and Gary Lucas in Elder god tier, tell Halen, Satriani and Hendrix wannabe to fuck off outta there, add in Knopfler and promote Hendrix, put Eddie Hazel in the pretty good tier in the place of / and then we'll be getting somewhere

Buckethead in god tier.

>no Guthrie Govan

he's not what i'd call a rock guitarist most of the time. jazz fusion's his usual gig

Underrated as fuck, still my favorite guitarist in NIN

Toni Iommi should definitely be somewhere on the list, as well as Randy Rhoads

...

>ELDER GOD TIER
Jimi Hendrix
Joe Satriani
Stevie Ray Vaughan

>GREAT TIER
Eddie Van Halen
Prince
Eric Clapton
David Gilmour
Rory Gallagher
Steve Vai
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jeff Beck
Robert Fripp

>GOOD TIER
Pete Townshend
Jimmy Page

Brian May
Keith Richards
Tony Iommi
The Edge

>NOTHING SPECIAL TIER
Angus Young
John Lennon
Joe Perry
Dave Grohl
Billie Joe Armstrong
Tom Morello
Joe Perry

>Jon Anderson
He was the singer. Steve Howe played guitar in Yes.

Breakdown of why I think this
>Ramones
In my opinion, Ramones is one of the greatest achievements in the history of pop and rock music. Everybody knows the story that the Ramones killed the excesses of prog rock with their fast, edgy rock and roll, but the reality and subtlety of their music is more complex than that.
The Ramones on their debut are the Ramones in their purest form. They strip away all the musical and lyrical excess of modern rock, leaving it naked. They're stupid, but ironically so. It's a great artistic achievement because it is the ultimate exercise in deconstruction. Feelings aren't expressed, they're shouted and beaten into your head. There's no musical variety. "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" is almost embarrassingly straightforward and honest. So Ramones is truly the only rock and roll album you *need* to hear, because everything common to all rock is here. It simultaneously celebrates and satirizes rock in the most pleasurable and purely fun way it can..

Most underrated guitarist?

My vote goes to Nels Cline

Agree

>comparing Billie "power chord" Jo to anyone on that list
He has literally never played a solo. Pat Smear did all the leads.

>No Al Di Meola

youtube.com/watch?v=9BwVXtpDwEI

Give Communique a listen

Agreed. Bucket is inhuman. He's as prolific as viper in terms of album output.

>PRETTY GOOD TIER
>Jimi Hendrix
>Not in ELDER GOD TIER
Jimi hendrix is objectively the greatest guitarist of all time.

Damn that's a big one. Also paco de lucia and John McLaughlin.

>hendrix not super-elder god tier
reported for pleb

>ELDER GOD TIER
Tuck Andress
Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Terry Kath
Frank Zappa

Buckethead
Albert Collins
Jerry Garcia
Neal Casal

>NOTHING SPECIAL TIER
Any guitarist you like that isn't listed

That makes two, make it happen OP

Where does J Mascis fit in all this

He was ranked as 'Nothing Special' you idiot

Subjectively, as he was the first to popularize certain techniques, same as EVH with tapping although the guy from genesis is credited with really inventing it for rock music.

>Hey guys, watch me play this scale at 280 bpm

Mark Tremonti should be in a Great tier, if that exists

No Graham Coxon? Robert Fripp? Joey Santiago? Josh Homme? Also you got yourself some metal guitarists in there, so
No Daron Malakian? Jim Root? John 5?

hendrix is better than any jazz/classical guitarrists tho

Except that Hendrix himself said Terry Kath was the greatest guitarist of all time

Good, borderline Pretty Good. His work with Witch is great.

I like Troy more than Josh but whatever
Also where's Lee Ranaldo

What he's saying is that he doesn't even deserve to be in that category, idiot. And listing joe perry twice proves you're a cunt.

Annie Clark is Elder God Tier.

hendrix > harrison > everyone else

And this simply shows you've only heard him play half a dozen songs. Listen to the album colma. He has a ton of downtempo, more relaxed compositions.

John 5 is Elder God

hell fuckin YYEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

youtube.com/watch?v=DvVmqnNBo9w

Tuck Andress. The guy is a fucking wizard.

youtube.com/watch?v=NtljYur4_T8

Yep, should be in at least good tier because of the riffwriting.

Vai is so goddamn technical, though. 90% of his songs are just guitarwank as he shows off how fast he can play. For the Love of God is the only song of his I can think of that shows any real emotion.

Petrucci is really good, but only within his genre.

Derek Trucks and Duane Allman should really be somewhere in the list, though.

>cherrypicking
Just goes he's technical doesn't negate the fact that he's easily top 5 currently alive. Petrucci is the same. And I think Gilbert is actually faster than both of them.

>he's never heard tender surrender
For the love of god pales in comparison.

Colma, Electric Tears, and Population Override are the only albums I can think of that are that way. Everything else, from Crime Slunk Scene to Enter the Chicken to The Elephant Man's Alarm Clock are all just him hitting the same solos at the same speeds with little real variation. Once you catch that one little riff that falls into every one of his solos you'll never unhear it.

That said, Population Override is probably my favorite BH album.

If you like population override, check out thanatopsis, same guys just a different name. He did a companion album to electric years and a bunch of his recent releases are mellow. Look into a real diamond in the rough and shadows in the sky.

Fred Durst in good tier

I mean, if you measure guitarists' worth by their technical ability, then sure Steve Vai is probably Top 10. I'm just not that interested in speed-oriented guitarists.

>Wata
>Pretty Good Tier

I like Boris, too, but come on man. She's nothing without her amps.

Where the fuck is Branca and Shields

Where the fuck is Kanye West

I'd say to be a good guitarist you have to be technical no matter what kind of music you play.

where isn't Kanye West...

>seeing no mention of Doug Martsch in this thread
