Am I the only one who doesn't get this guy? Or a great amount of this genre?

Like grime in general has great production a lot of the time that's really interesting and shit, but then you just get these guys yelling incoherently over it with absolutely no rhythm or flow and repeating the same word or phrase at the end of every line. And it gets praised non stop.

And people say "oh it's the culture you don't get it" but there are genuinely great rappers who ride grime beats really well with actual decent lyricism like Ghetts, Kano, Dot Rotten, Rocks FOE, etc yet shite like Crazy T is acceptable.

And why do they never release music? People say grime will never break thru in America because they don't get it or whatever, but Skepta's overseas success shows otherwise. Shit, you've even got people like AJ Tracey getting shows in the US nowadays. The reason grime isn't successful overseas is because they don't fucking release any music.

Most of these guys aren't doing anything groundbreaking, they should be able to put out at least a couple mixtapes a year or an album or something. But most of these guys have been around for at least a decade and have one or two albums to their name if you're lucky.

>british rap
>anything above a 4/10

Cringe

This

You LITERALLY don't understand grime, you literally do not get it.

Grime is not about lyricism, it is not about about being a great rapper or any of that shit. Grime is what hip hop used to be, way back when it just started. It's people chatting shit over beats to entertain a club audience. If you're not good at that, you have no future in grime. And crazy t was undeniably one of the best when it came to that.

The MCs don't release music because that's not their job, it's not what they do. There's plenty of grime releases out there coming out every year, but they're usually instrumentals and the odd tune with an MC.

Now to get to the fucking point:
Grime is a very fractured scene.
You have the people making instrumental grime tunes for club use.
youtube.com/watch?v=Caz9qK9K_Qg
You have the people trying to do something experimental with the grime sound, going towards this bait pop sound that inspired PC music or even far, far away from the club sound, that's the gobstopper and crazylegs crews:

youtube.com/watch?v=5qU0TpAr9Xw

That's the producer side of things, they release plenty of music every year.

But then you got the MCs, who I don't care and don't know much about.

Also, Rocks usually chats over trap beats, it's awful.

Grime is club music.
When you're at the club and you're fucked you don't want to hear the MC talking about deep serious problems, you just want something to shout along to.
I was at an eskimo dance a long time ago and Wiley was continuously shouting ESKIBOI into the mic for about 20 minutes with the occasional WHEEL IT.
It's one of the most amazing club experiences I've had in my entire life. At the end of the day, Grime is club music. It's raison d'etre is the club.
I've never seen titch, sure, but I know that he can work a floor like nobody else.
Him on Functions is honestly the tune that represents grime best.

At the beginning you have a short segment (roughly 8-16 bars) for introductions and mixing and chatter and at the end it just kinda ends without anything. Pay attention how the instrumental itself is incredibly stagnant, it doesn't go anywhere, it's the same melody repeated for about five minutes with the same drums and the occasional chord. This is a pattern you'll find in most grime instrumentals.
Titch's voice carries the tune, his voice progresses the tune.
Also, you can shit on his thuggish angry delivery all you want, his technique is flawless. He's perfectly on beat the entire time.

Compare this to Stormzy on the same beat, which is fucking pathetic. He has no energy and his technique is complete shit.

So basically it's sort of like hip-hop's version of Britpop?

kinda
it even comes with the same whiny lyrics about relationship drama and shit
Hell listen to this, do you recognize that sample?

All talked about on a regular basis

So it's like a British version of trap?

nah, I wrote all of this.

>any form of rap
>anything above a 0/10

These two albums are some of my favourite albums of all time, and it's nice to see them brought up by somebody other than myself.
