Guys, I have been playing bass guitar for over a decade and have just graduated from university with my degree. The problem is that I am broke, with no job and my parents want rent this coming Monday. I need to earn money stat and Ill have most luck getting it by doing what I do best. Playing bass for people. My sister has done agency work in the past where if a company or an office ring up and say they need a receptionist, she goes along and fills in for them. I was wondering if there are any services like that for musicians, I wouldn't know where to look. Surely there must be people you can call when your bassist is too ill for a show or something. Ill located in the north of England (Derbyshire if that helps).
Try looking into local theaters. I've made solid money playing in pits for musicals.
Honestly, your best bet is to find a job that pays decently and has hours that allow you to practice and take gigs if you wind up getting them.

If you have a Guitar Center (or something similar), I'd just go there and try out everything -- try different shapes, sounds, styles, prices, etc. Eventually you'll find a guitar that sounds good, is comfortable and in your price range, just be sure to buy it online for a cheaper price.

Neck first. Tone from pickups second, and even then they can be changed. Any guitar can play in a blues or jazz style realistically. Don't fall for useless gimmicks like thru-necks, flame top/carves, or tonewoods that do absolutely nothing. Don't listen to the faggots here that tell you to buy a Jaguar or Mustang or other hipster shithead guitars.

on my esp ltd ex 50, turning the bridge nob increases the brightness and makes it louder even when the switch is on the neck pickup. the same is true for the neck nob increasing warmness and volume when it's on the bridge pickup. i bought this secondhand, is this supposed to happen or is it a little broken?

This. You could do a semi-hollow guitar, those are what you usually see as a jazz guitar, but really with jazz you could use any guitar as long as you get a warm sound.
