Good riffs create their own atmosphere anyway, pic related. Production trickery is one of many ways to cover up dull songwriting. Why write complex interlocking phrases when you can tremolo indeterminate brown notes for 5 minutes, then have a 10 bpm dirge section with like 3 power chords and SPOOKY leads, all drenched it in copious amounts of VST reverb?
Thankfully, there's plenty of nice DM being made that dares venture out of this cavern.

Same fambam. And the way the lead over the following riff remains static as the underlying melody/rhythm changes. Diamonds. I honestly think they had weirder and more creative riffs than anyone up to that point. GoG is more innovative than it gets credit for.

Just so you know, the material discussed above is radically different from that album. AtG is almost 2 bands: one of an early period that began as an offshoot of Grotesque in 1990 and ended with their 2nd full length in 1993, and one of a later period from 1994 to the present day.
I too started with SotS, when I was not as acclimated to death metal. But I went back and listened to all their works and now prefer the earlier period. Their first album especially will require multiple listens to digest, but it's definitely worth it.
