The japanese shoegaze/indie rock scene is very unique I believe. Many small, barely known bands that are fucking amazing.
Also check out gusya ningen, their sound is pretty interesting and I dont really know how to describe it. It ranges from noise tracks to metal, from metal to rock and some old folks music thats oddly fun. Their lyrical content is also quite fun.
In general if you look past the mainstream shit (just get a JPS account you fuck), you'll find that Japan has the most unique music market, hiding right behind the mainstream shit.
