how do I get into the mountain goats? had a bad first listen, never tried them again but want to.

all hail west texas seems to be, to me, the very best album to introduce new listeners to TMG. it exemplifies their lofi sound and the little flashes of stories that make their music great. what did you start with? tallahasee? thats a little dark and a sort of outlier/pretty bad intro to them

I tried the sunset tree and wasn't really sure what I was getting into

I started with Tallahassee and liked it quite a bit. Also major props for Reaching Quiet.

huh... you didnt like it? sunset tree is fantastic imo and pretty well representative of later TMG. if you dont like that or AHWT then TMG is not for you but something tells me you might get something out of the lofi TMG stuff. AHWT will give you the vibe of that era. maybe im wrong but i think TMG is something id recommend for people who love booze, guitars and books. anyway let me know what you think of AHWT if you listen to it now (or if you recognize my 5x5 in a later thread). TMG can feel heavy handed when he has a band backing it, the crackly boombox solo songs have a pleasant charm to them though

me too but i still wouldnt recommend it as a starting point, especially if they dont like sunset tree. props for vol 2
