been listening to a lot of Indian Classical recently, mostly carnatic ragas

I'm wondering now, is there anything similar to this, but more upbeat? traditional dances music, perhaps? folk songs? with more instrumentation and percussion? (but I still don't want anything modern, or campy bollywood shit)

You could say it's modern.
I like it.

well, being modern doesn't bother me, I just want to listen to classic music from India and not 20th century western-influenced fusion stuff

you could try George Harrison's Wonderwall Music. actually, anything indian-related George did in general

good music but still very western rock oriented

Check out all the songs in the Raaga based songs section, and his album Vande Mataram

end this

but from my limited understanding, carnatic is basically the same as indian classical was before the mughals came and brought persian music influences to the north of india. its more formulaic overall and it retained the emphasis on vocals and this weird indian-variant of jodeling
