i know that these are a bit overkill but i love to use modern cpu-hungry vsts (and also poorly-optimized ones)

drum pad suggestions?
thought about akai mpd218 but apparently they have issues double hitting
Picking up velocity well is the biggest thing to me- no major issues- and knobs are a huge plus because i'm sick of automating macros in ableton with a mouse ;__________;
cheaper is always better of course... just something simple
fairly new to producing. been working on this emo post-grime tune as of lately. any feedback, suggestions, reality checks deeply appreciated.
safe.

/prod/, help me.
How do I play barre on an acoustic guitar? I only ever had like 20 hours of guitar lessons when I was 15 and I want to use some of that acoustic sound in my songs.
Where should I put my mic for recording too? It's a dynamic microphone.
On an unrelated note, fuck, I so wish I could be 15 again. Anyone else feel the same?
Charles Bell
it's called acid senpai
Jaxon Walker
>play barre
Play a barred chord? Can you play guitar...?
Place mic near sound hole pointed at 12th fret about a foot or two away
Charles Lewis
Eh, I have to post it while it's a WIP. Project info says I worked on this for the 8 hours (have some more of it though, but I didn't put it in a clyp right now) and I feel it's a little bit too much time for this, but I wouldn't really know since I never made a track from start to finish. So, I'd like to get some feedback from you guys in order to be more efficient when I continue working on this tomorrow.
All the unfinished projects and sketches didn't teach me some fundamental lessons and now I feel like a complete beginner again. But I really have to finish this.
Samuel Murphy
Wrong thread. Ask gg
Adam Torres
>never finished a song Okay I've been meaning to ask-
It seems weird to me that there are so many "beginners" here that posts songs that actually sound pretty decent- it took me at least a year to make anything that sounded remotely good.
Are a lot of you guys scouring for presets / making sample heavy stuff?
. . . I tend to get down a bulk of the song before getting into any mixing or layers etc... I think you need to add in a little something in that later part to keep listeners wondering where it was going. I got bored after the voice dropped out
Xavier Morales
clyp.it/bxuvh0wu does the part where the beat drops in sound awkward? also how is the mix/master sounding?
Josiah Gutierrez
Me, not at all, but yeah, there actually are a lot of clyps here that use a lot of samples. Hell, I've been /prod/ing in spare time for 2 years now, but I never bothered finishing something and I have to start doing it now.
... Do you have any ideas what could I do? Yeah, I'm probably doing a mistake by going into mixing before getting down a whole structure of the song, I should take a step back. I'll work on those strings and chord progressions, I didn't plan for them to just repeat 4 chords, but I stopped working on them for a moment in order to work on a drop (or whatever, I don't like that term t b h). I will add more instruments to accompany them, too. But, is that it, though, or is there something more that you don't like?
Good to know this stuff before continuing to work on it, I guess I still can't just finish a whole track without asking anyone anything.
Jacob Evans
Oh, btw... Can you guys hear the bass at all? Actually, it was supposed to be the center of the attention in the drop, and it is playing another theme. I'm struggling to create more space for it, though.
Daniel Gomez
yeah, mostly the very low fundamentals, though. give that thing some harmonics
also a third question is the vocal sample loud enough? i'm not trying to get a lead or anything just some texture and melody but i feel like it might be kind of annoying if it's too quiet
Jonathan Gomez

start worrying about the master when the tune is finished
Asher Cooper
why u gotta be like that?
Noah Campbell
why you gotta ask for advice and then get mad?
Dominic Smith
that's what mastering is for though, finished songs. if you are still looking for advice on the mix then dont worry about the master until it's time to
Brandon Martinez
I have two drum machines and some synths that I use when jamming with friends and to make music on my own, but I haven't dropped $$ on recording equipment yet. I'm looking at Ableton Live Suite 9.5 + Ableton Push 2 (I do not have a decent midi controller as of now), along with a Motu Ultralite MK3 Hybrid interface. I already have the cash on hand, and I've already purchased some monitors (Yamaha HS8). Altogether, should I go for it? My friend straight up bought me FL Studio but I'm not a big fan of the layout, and my friends who I make music with use Ableton + Audacity pretty exclusively. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Jack Reed
because you're not working efficiently and distracting yourself with half dB cuts instead
William Ortiz
what did i do to deserve this?

not understand the difference between mixing and mastering
Caleb Lee
I want to make rock-oriented lounge music and I suppose the only way to make this come true is trough the power of midi. Is it possible to do this without a midi-keyboard, or should I get one right out of the gate? I haven't even chosen a DAW as of now. Feels like a lot of money to spend for a young adventurer like me. In all honesty I don't even want to create digital music, and am much more interested in creating analog music - but it doesn't seem to be an option considering the price.
Christian Wright
i obviously understand the difference between mixing and mastering i just wanted a second opinion on the specific questions i asked
James Williams
Haha yeah same here, I'm always surprised at how good most stuff on here sounds. The main issue people seem to have is usually composition and melodic ideas, but the mixing often sounds quite good.
Isaac Morgan
Dropping by one more time before bed.
This is a different theme with taylor's vocal sample (with some shifted pitches, which sound great actually). Do you like this one more, than
perhaps? I personally do. It's just a mere sketch, but hopefully it is more interesting than the first one.
I should really just sit at a piano and work on the composition, I often get stuck in 4 chorders that end up boring when I do it on a PC, because it's very annoying to improvise on a keyboard.
definitely get a midi keyboard. you'd be surprised what kind of sounds you can get for free if you look hard enough. make a bunch of songs in your daw with midi and then once you get rich from being a single 33 yo software developer, then you can buy a bunch of analog equipment while you try to avoid child support payments for a child you're pretty sure is not yours
Ryder Cooper
Dayum bruh that's pretty dank.
Henry Sanders
I love your sound. Give me your Soundcloud or something mate. Yes, it's the user from the last thread.
Leo Flores
Guys, I have this pic related. Anybody maybe has experience with electric pianinos like that? I want to use it as a midi keyboard and buying any synthesizer with a quality like that would cost me a fortune, so might as well put this to use again (if I can).
Levi Ortiz
>tfw will never be able to achieve those (you)'s every time like this user

Christopher Turner
i use my electric piano as my main midi keyboard, no complaints here (except for no pitchbend wheel but meh)
Aiden Cooper
thanks if only (you)s generated bitcoin. i dont rly get that many i dont think though
ok fine soundcloud.com/effoharkay i'll put the 6 or so songs i made up sometime at the end of this week maybe

You talented fuck I hate you.
Angel Bell
How long have you been making music for?
Levi Anderson
Can anybody explain what is so great about this sound that people go crazy when this user posts clypits?
Oliver Hernandez
Well, this sound really makes me feel very nice and gives me images of a very comfy puzzle game/ mmorpg game I'd always love to play.
It just makes me feel, I guess and I really want to learn to make a sound like that.
Also, you asked for an explanation, don't bitch when people deliver one.
Liam Cruz
idk why ppl go crazy over any clypits at all?
music is actually pretty dumb when you think about it. Like, you just sit there and listen to music? you're just sitting in like a chair or something and you're just trying to focus on something that's not even there? like you can't even see it desu sempai it's all just noise and hurts my ears, its just one big joke that some old dudes in a church who fucked little boys hyped up so that they could get brownie points for some imaginary musical space man that would send them to a nice place when they die.
on the computer like 3 years but played instruments for a long time
Leo Bennett
That guy was not me.
James Parker
I sense a great amount of sarcasm, but it was just a non-hateful, genuine question.
Parker Gonzalez
>played instruments for a long time Shows, desu.
Brayden Scott
I fucking hate talented people. I'm so fucking full of angst and biterness because I feel inferior.
I'm serious.

I don't believe in talent. It exists to some degree, but it likely isn't as prominent as we make ourselves believe. Besides, there's nothing we can do about being talentless except for working harder.
I do feel sad I can experience synesthesia though. Also infenitely jealous of people without music theory knowledge how can identify and pull chords out of thin air - makes me feel incredibly inferior.
Carson Johnson
>start an acoustic guitar track just for the fuck of it >sounds better than everything I ever did Guess I found my calling.
Producing Psytrance using Qubase5. I've starting to come to gripps with EQing, automation and channel groups for compressors. What's next?
Ryder Baker
fx busses? delay/reverb design?
Jackson Wilson
what do you guys do with the freeze function on reverb? it sounds so cool and i always feel like im under-utilising it
Brandon Fisher
please somebody ;______;
Benjamin Gonzalez
>utilising don't say utilize ever
i don't really use it desu- now that you mention it though i'm going to try resampling / throwing on some abrupt noisey parts or something...
Ryan Sanders
>ahaha i wish i could make music user >oh, no i just can't do it
spiteful lols everytime
Jaxon Carter
I toy with delay/reverb. But would never say I'm happy with the results. Where can learn to "design"? No idea of busses. Also, what do you guys use to EQ with?
Logan Butler
This feels like the DVD menu screen music for Japanese cosplay porn. Sounds like it would be a good target for vaporwave-ification as well.
Noah Taylor
If the pads on the MPD are anything like the pads on the MPK61, then avoid at all costs. Mine are so rigid you have to be the fucking terminator to register a beat. And FORGET about velocity control.
You have the right idea though, if you want pads, buy something that is designed around pads, not a strapon to something else.

How do you write lyrics? I've got the feels at the moment and I want to ooze some sadness into an apporpriately feelsy song, but I'm shit at writing. Does anyone have any general tips?
Write down words or ideas that you like and don't feel like you've heard a lot, and stitch 'em together when you have enough that are on the same topic
Anthony Green
>post-grime Not a thing btw
Jordan Lee
it was a joke senpai
Christian Brooks
What are some must have plugins that you other thieving nerds downloaded?
Justin Murphy
im trying so hard to get to the lyrics, since /prod/ucing i the difficult part for me.
imo i would say just get words that you are feeling and find ways to create sentences to attach them to each other, like you wanna use
>Burden and >Pain
then you go something like,
The heavy burden weighing on top of me giving me pain noone will ever see
its stupid but mask it with good music and tweak the lyrics a bit after you finish and you've got a song.
i so desperately wanna reach that part, /prod/ is so damn hard right now
Brayden Brown
I think we can all agree that every musician has their insecurities, and if you say you don't, then you're a lying cunt.
Landon Sullivan
im actually pretty damn confident i can make music, but im just scared ill never learn got to do it
i get hundreds of ideas a day but have no way too to apply it on my studio cus i dont know how.
its so damn frustrating having a fucking book full of these ideas and barley getting any of them made.
that may be my biggest insecurity, that i will never learn.
does anyone else have this?
Jack Nelson
Just bought myself a meme preamp off ebay. The same model of preamp that was used for recording much of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.
Can't believe I never got into buying shit off ebay before. I've also got my eyes on a tube mic that I can probably get a good deal on
Austin Reyes
Press the midi button at the top right of the screen, and if it's got knobs or control banks/buttons just press them whilst its on the midi mapping mode
Isaac Robinson
I use a shit Packard Bell easynote TK i've had for years but it actually runs really well
Nicholas Taylor
How can I pitch shift vocals efficiently? I use Newtone and sometimes it sounds great even with I shift it by larger intervals, but other times I can't even pull a minor second without it sounding metallic and rough.
See, here you can't even notice I changed the melodic line until "he IS in love" at the end.
Jason Ross
Anyhting thats not utter shit is fine. You want usb ports, a non-ultra shit processor, and some space. That's way beyond enough and you should spend the extra money on actual equipment
Andrew Flores
What's your current goal with /prod/, guys? My became relatively low - to get at least one person interested in my soundcloud profile after posting a clyp. It's pretty meaningless, but it'll give me an assurance that I'm doing something right and going in the right direction. Next step is getting enough bravery to post it on Reddit and maybe get a few upvotes and a couple of new followers.
Having 0 connections and social anxiety is fucking great in this world. I'm looking forward to my bright future.
