Is it a faux pas to give vaporwave artists a few bucks through their bandcamp? I told a guy on Soundcloud I'd dropped him a five through his bandcamp and he told me im an idiot and blocked me. I figure it's like buying my favorite artists a beer

Who is this memewave artist you speak of

normally it's not wrong

They have to prove they are some sort anti consumerists I guess.

Vaporwave is a meme scene of tumblr style sarcasm regarding capitalism. It's also stupidly simple with proper sampling, so if they were to make money off it most of the money should go to the sampled artist. Also since vaporwave is native to the Internet and is primarily in mp3 format most of the people in the scene see no reason to pay for digital/intangible media so downloading is the main means of distribution while actual purchases are a trap to exploit those ignorant of the scene.
TL;DR
>don't pay vaporwave artists because vaporwave, no matter how entertaining or enjoyable is bullshit.

Who's the artist?

>sarcasm regarding capitalism
but what if i paid them ironically? wouldn't that be proper form? it's not really capitalism, guys, it's ironic

Note how I mentioned that it's tumblr style sarcasm.
They don't work with multiple levels of irony like we do.
Still you aren't in the wrong so much as you are a victim of being generous to people who don't appreciate it.

what about all those artists selling cassette tapes of their albums

>paying for music

>and he told me im an idiot and blocked me.

irony is fucking dead and if you think you "work with multiple levels of irony" you should kill yourself

Boycott him, also proof or it never happened.

lol porn

Most vaporwave is free because it's supposed to be about the music. If you really wanna give money just buy a tape if they have them

Only Future Funk artists should be paid.

>he told me im an idiot and blocked me
What worthless a cunt.

That's physical media so there is some inherent value in it since it required materials that have a real world value. So they have to at least cover the cost of production.

casettes cost money, recording them takes work.

i do some ambient noise stuff on the side and put a short release up on bandcamp just to share it. i never anticipated someone actually buying it, and thankfully nobody has, but since i'm working on a longer, more detailed release i've decided to put it up for charity. i still doubt anyone would buy it and i don't think its necessarily worth anything, but just in case, i'm going to make it a charity thing.

vaporwave artists getting any level of unwarranted attention should maybe do the same if they don't think their work is worth anything.

That's what you get for giving money to James Ferraro.

A good number of vaporwave artists are full on lefties, they don't like their music being sold. Usually they don't have to worry cause it's shit anyway but I don't understand the ones who complain. If I released a piece of music, I want it to be successful and make money, like I've only made about £50 in total off my music, but that helped pay my bills last month

How ironic.

>he told me im an idiot and blocked me.

I'm assuming he set his music to pay what you want. Sounds like he's an idiot and a douchebag.

WHO????
